Driving over the bridge
Sometimes I see photographers on the south side of this bridge, but there were only drivers & cars during my June visit. This is busy bridge connecting the two sides of the Valley and is a worthwhile stop.

One of the Yosemite Valley bridges spanning over the Merced River
There are a handful of bridges in Yosemite Valley including the Pohono Bridge leaving El Portal Road, crossing the Merced River and connecting to the Wawona Road near the Bridveil Waterfall.

This is a single arch bridge built in 1928. It spans 80 feet and is made of concrete with stone cladding, giving it a rustic and rural appearance fit for it valley surrounding. The bridge is quite attractively set amidst the river and shoreline trees and really nice to look at.

There is a small pullover area just past the bridge. We enjoyed parking here and walking over and around the bridge for a few photographs. Definitely worth a few minutes of your time if you like architecture and old bridges.

Il ponte tra i due lati

A beautiful bridge
To be fair I have a personal connection to this landmark. Generally that is prohibited, but I think the powers that be will give me a pass on this one. My wife’s grandfather built this bridge. He didn’t personally haul all the stone or cut it to shape, but he owned the company that had the contract and lived in a tent nearby for the time it took to construct the project. I know my drive in has come to nearly an end when I teach the bridge, it serves as a landmark in so many ways. It is beautiful and a great place to start an adventure!

Great Place for A Picture
You got to stop and take a picture at Pohono Bridge. Tip- go early, just like anything else in the valley.. If you go early there are not a lot of people. If you try to take pictures in the afternoon the will be dodging and waiting for cars to go by. FYI on the east side of the bridge you can get down below the bridge and take some pictures looking up...

Pohono Bridge to the Valley
Many drivers just whiz over the quaint Pohono Bridge on their way to famous destinations in Yosemite such as Tunnel View, Wawona Lodge, Bridal Veil Falls and the Village. It is worth a stop and there is space for one to two cars right after crossing the bridge on the right side. One can walk over the bridge safely and look down at the river or view the Merced from the side. In winter if there is snow on the pebbles and stones one gets a glorious introduction to Yosemite in winter.

It's Bridge and more.
To many this may seem like just an old bridge, but it's not as old as one may think. This bridge was build in 1968 and crosses over the Merced River on the west end of Yosemite Valley. If you are near, it is worth making a stop to see the flow of the river and may snap a picture. More important is to see beyond the bridge. On the south side of the bridge is a small shack with what looks to be TV antennas. This shack is a flood sensor station that tells that water lower of the Merced River. Next to the shack you will see a gage, a stick that looks like a yard stick. It show the current level of the river.

This bridge will be os some interest to those who are artist. I was there in the summer and the afternoon sunlight was too strong, but I know that the light will be right during the fall. With the changing of the colors within the trees, I am sure that this will be a great stop to create a picture of a painting.

Although, I would not suggest that people go out of their way to get to this bridge, but stop there is you're in the area.

Interesting and worth a look, though you may not linger

I deliberated between average and very good for the rating for this stone bridge, but the construction really is unique and a reminder of an earlier time. I ended up coming down on the side of the higher rating, and on reflection believe that to be right.

You have arrived
This bridge is the sign that you have arrived or leaving the valley.
While entering the valley if you see the bridge it is sign to look out for fern springs on the right. Also a sign to slow down a LOT.
If you are leaving and see this bridge it is sign that you just passed valley view. You can try to park somewhere and walk back to valley view or cross the bridge and go around few miles.

The construcition of this bridge is unique
This bridge like the others of this genre were hand built by master masons. Each stone is places exactly the right position and shaped to blend into a work of art. Being from Maine and having spent a lot of time at Arcadia national park where the bridges are huge and all different, I came away wiht a greater appreciation for the stone work. Imagine building these bridge sin the 1920's and 1930's with the technology they had at that time. Look under the bridge and take a glance at the sides to see how smooth they are. These bridges are worth taking the time to appreciate.
