Near Comporta you can find a small fisherman village called Carasqueira. The wood structure built by the fisherman to access the boats is unique and fully integrated in the nature. It is a spot to take some pictures. If you are lucky to find a fisherman, maybe you can buy some oysters or clams…

Interesting, but despite being a pier with unique and peculiar characteristics, it deserves at least a visit for anyone who passes near its location, even if just to form an opinion and be able to say that they know it.

In the town of CARRASQUEIRA in the estuary of the Sado River, there is the natural port of Carrasqueira. With a structure of wooden stilts on the Sado River, this complex has more than 20 fishermen's houses with their pier, which are still in use, dedicated to shellfish fishing in the area and in which the fishermen store their fishing tools. Since March 2023, the area has been enhanced with a new fish market, which allows fishermen to deliver their catches daily. The best time to visit the complex is at sunset and at high tide, which allows, with the last rays of the sun and when the tide rises, to appreciate, in more detail, this surprising and unique port area in the center of the Portuguese Atlantic.

Amazing place to walk and watch the sunset.

One of the most incredible places to take photographs at sunset with high tide. It is beautiful, peaceful and enigmatic. Fishermen often arrive with cuttlefish and bivalves and purchasing them at affordable prices is an excellent way to take home a piece of this paradise.

It is a surprising place, some of the piers is still very much in use, while others are very worn, contributing to the charm if the harbour. There’s a sturdy path built along the piers, pram friendly.

This fishing village is delightful and full of character. we went on a December Sunday afternoon, so it was a little bleak and quiet. I am sure if you visited in the summer months it would be busier with even more to observe. It really reminded us of our visit to Thailand. The little fishermen's huts supported on stilts in the water were accessible along a long boardwalk so very easy to do. we saw many birds and jellyfish. Sadly also on our visit the tide was out but it didn't distract from the quaintness of this place. There is also the opportunity to buy fresh fish directly from the fisherman if you are lucky.
