Great little trip up to Blaenau Ffestiniog and back from Porthmadog. Disappointed as only got 35min stay at Blaenau Ffestiniog when we got there as had to come back; only train of the day. Beautiful steam train and we were able to get some lovely pictures of it and travel as you would ‘back in the day’. All staff were lovely from booking in to alighting on the return. Thanks to all the volunteers for the work they do and we hope they have a great season.

Rode from Caernarfon to Rhyd Ddu. That's as far as it went. Family of 4 cost £80. We were done in just over 2 hours. It was supposed to be 3. Just disappointed overall. Good views at the Rhyd Ddu end but the rest of it was just navigating past empty fields and caravan sites. I wouldnt recommend a visit unless the whole line is open so you can have a proper day out.

First ever journey on the Ffestiniog Railway did not disappoint. After reading and watching many documentaries and reading so many books on the railway, myself and my parents decided to visit the railway. We left enough time to travel to Porthmadog from where we were staying. I had originally planned to travel to Beddgelert, but for whatever reason the journey was cancelled, the staff contacted me and allowed me to change my train to the Mountain Spirit journey to Blaenau Ffestiniog. This was in no means a downgrade and I was still so happy on the journey, despite rain being forecast for the majority of the journey we had sun and great views. Rain started again the moment we reached Blennau Ffestiniog and had to step outside! The only disappointing thing was the amount of time we had in Blennau Ffestiniog, it was only 40 minutes and with the downpour of rain it was not worth venturing beyond the station as we would have been in such a rush. I would have loved to have visited some smaller businesses while there, but alas. Maybe this is something they can improve on. My parents and I realised by the time we returned back to Porthmadog, we would only have 10 minutes to reach our connecting train back to where we were staying and the next train home would be very late. I asked the guard would it be okay if we stopped Minnffordd which has a connecting station to the main line and he was more than happy to oblige. The train stopped and the guard guided us to the crossing point. Very pleasant chap and good bit of service I have to say. We only had to wait 15 minutes at Minffordd for the connecting train home then.
All in all this was a terrific journey and did not disappoint my childhood dreams of what I expected this railway journey to be like. I hope to return one day with my partner to try out the Welsh Highland stretch of the journey to Caernarfon.

The journey up from Porthmadog to Caernarvon was excellent, we were well looked after right from the free car parking and the helpful staff at the station to the on-board train attendants who were very knowledgeable and pointed out various scenic points to look out for.
It was sad that there had been an incident on the line which meant that we had to complete the return journey by coach. This however was very well organised, and we were notified of the problem by text. The train company very generously gave us a full refund because we could not complete the return journey by train.

We booked the trip starting from:Harbour Station, Porthmadog, Gwynedd to destination: Tan y Bwlch.
It was a very pleasant trip for our entire family. Very good forest, very calm, except the train track sound, the destination was very calm) and scenic track.
The only twist in our trip we had was that we initially arrived to a different train station in Porthmadog so missed the morning train and took the after train starting at 1:55PM. That is why I gave the full address in the beginning of the review.
Luckily the weather was good for us. My 8 year old kid thoroughly enjoyed and super excited all along the train trip.

Went on two trips on consecutive days, Porthmadog to Blaenau Ffestiniog on the Thursday and Porthmadog to Caernarfon on the Friday (27th/28th October) the trains were excellent and the scenery spectacular with the autumn colours and sunshine. The staff were superb especially on the Friday when an incident on the line made it impossible to go on the return journey, a text was sent while we were in Caernarfon to make us aware and coaches were laid on, a full refund has been promised such a shame it happened but even one way was superb would definitely go again

Geweldige ervaring vanuit het Pullman Panorama rijtuig. De picknickmand was heen en weer prima gevuld. Het personeel is zeer vriendelijk en behulpzaam.
Let wel op als je minder goed ter been bent: vanaf het plein bij Caernarfon Castle is het een flink stuk naar beneden. Dat hoeft geen probleem te zijn, want beneden bij het station is ook een weg met ruim parkeergelegenheid.
De rit geeft een geweldige blik op de omgeving, met veel natuur en mooie vergezichten. Beddgelert is mooi, maar toeristisch.

Our first journey was to Tanybwlch - a beautiful little station with an excellent tearoom. Lots of photo opportunities for my railway enthusiast partner, a lovely journey there with lots to see - unfortunately our return was marred by a dog in our carriage barking at every whistle.
The second nearly didn't happen, we went to book for the Blaenau Ffestiniog trip but it was fully booked! We went into the gift shop to buy some modelling items and suddenly the booking lady appeared as she had a cancellation! She had tracked us down - so we were back the next day. This trip is really the journey not the destination as there is just a short stop - time enough for a cup of tea at the little kiosk.
Arrive very early to choose your seats.

Can well behaved dogs travel on this railway. Yes or no would be helpful?

We took our two Jack Russells on the train no probs; however they do NOT allow dogs in the First Class compartments - nice carpets and furnishings - fair enough! As of August 2022.

There is currently no option to book in December for trains departing from Porthmadog- will these services be added at a later date, or is there no service at this time of year?

I found the people at the ticket office were extremely helpful and will do their absolute best for you. My advice is contact them so you get the best journey for you

Hello, yes we welcome dogs on our trains in standard class, when you book your tickets online there is a box for you to say how many dogs you have.

Hi, when looking at buying tickets for myself and my son (14) I can only see an option to buy 2 adult tickets - am I to presume that I buy the 2 person/adult tickets and pay full price for both of us, or is there an option to buy tickets for 1 adult with 1 child. Many thanks.

Hello,
We are visiting Greenacres Haven site in May this year and we’re hoping to do a train journey with you.
Is there parking at the train station or nearby?
Also what journey would you recommend? There’ll be 2 adults and 2 children aged 10 & 11.
Is it best to pre book too?
Sorry for all the questions, it’s our first visit to wales.
Any help or advice would be greatly received.

8/11/2021 We are coming to Ffestiniog 11/8/21. My maternal grandmother was born there 12/29/1895 @ 5 (could be 3) May St. Want to explore area for a few days & hopefully find records of her birth. Her last name was Owens. She & parents came to the USA about 1897. Her dad was a slater. Looking for advice on accomodations with breakfast for a few days for my husband & I. Hi Kevin, prices are all inclusive of two people, the Glaslyn venturer from Porthmadog to Beddgelert is £70, Mountain Prince from Porthmadog to Dduallt id £60 and the Gelert Explorer from Caernarfon to Beddgelert is £88. Children are £1 each, dogs are £ each and any extra adults are half of the fare for two on top.
