Great private tours! We booked three different experiences over three days. Rincon Volcano including waterfall swim, volcanic park hike, and hot springs/mud bath. Palo Verde boat tour and a private snorkeling tour.

We booked this tour via Maleku tours who did our transfer for us and we were very pleased. From the moment we boarded the bus til the moment we left I felt completely at ease and safe. The Nica boarder can be an uneasy experience, but Marco kept us informed anytime progress was made. We had a longer experience getting back into Costa because of another cross country bus that had been stalled due to contraband being found on board. The viewpoint, the volcano, lunch, the marketplace, and the boat ride were all very enjoyable and memorable. There is quite a bit of time spent on the bus and he made it very enjoyable with the different stories and information shared. I found my self the next day wondering about how he and his family were doing-that's how nice it was to meet him. We were on our honeymoon and it was a wonderful day of memories.

We took the Nicaragua bus tour with Papagayo Tours, and I would not suggest doing it.
The day was too long for what you see. we were to be picked up at 5AM (5:15). They took us to breakfast which was good. On the bus we traveled to the boarder. Spent one hour there with the locals trying to sell you everything. We saw the volcanoes, OK, the lake boat ride was nice, lunch was OK. Most of the places were nice. The air conditioning, in the bus, did not work well enough to keep the bus cool.
The guides did their job. Coming back we were at the boarder for a short time (30 minutes)
We did not get back to our resort until 9PM, a long day.

We booked this trip right off the beach of the Hilton Papagayo. We were nervous at first, but when a few of the other hotel guests told us about their experiences with Jose, we knew it was the right choice for us, and WAY cheaper than the hotel's tour company. We booked a 3 hour snorkeling boat tour on the "Bahamas" boat. Jose's son drove the boat, spoke perfect english, and provided us beverages. We ended up with a treat of seeing sea turtles, a mommy & baby humpback whale, and tons of fish while snorkeling. The snorkeling equipment was fine for the trip, but we actually had brough our own to the hotel & wished we had brought it with us as ours had the stoppers on the top of the tube that help keep water out.We also went to a beach cave which was beautiful and neat for my boys (ages 11 & 14) to explore. We did negotiate the price down a little bit, and it was worth every penny, as it was a private tour for our family of 4. Thank you guys!

We booked 3 tours at the beach with Gustavo. He does his best to get you the trip you want. Most of the trips are private, but we had a group of six. When you book with this co., you are the boss.
The first we did quad riding. We had a great time. Various terrain. Trips are varied by riding level. We were all experienced, so we were able to do a loop with more challenges.
Next we did a boat trip and surfing lesson. Gustavo is a great surf instructor. He took us to a great beach for surfing. All of us who wanted to were able to get up to surf. We tried to snorkel on the way back, but a storm rolled in so it was cut short. The equipment for snorkeling wasn't the best, but it was fine for an add on to the surf trip.
Last we went to a volcanic area. We went to a waterfall on the way. The water was cold, but it was a great time. We went to the volcano after that. We saw the volcanic activity, sat in the sauna, did the mud bath and the mineral hot tubs. It was interesting and our guide Christian was great. It was less exciting that the previous tours but something everyone should see at least once.

First of all, I know it sounds leery to book excursions on the beach and not through the reps in the lobby. I travel alot and have always booked through my tour operator. Costa Rica was a bit different for me, understanding that their beaches are public and that these businesses exists is important.
These are legitimate companies and they do more for you than the reps in the lobby do.. They customize your excursions to suit you.. All Private tours with yourself and your families. We even made stops in town like the bank machine, ect,..Also, the prices for these private tours were often the same or less than the group tours that you book in the lobby.
I travelled with 1 girlfriend (Also a Travel Agent) and we were told by some of our clients that they had booked their excursions at the beach, so first checked out the prices that the reps inside were offering and then wandered down to the beach.
1st person we met was Erick (His company wears blue Shirts). He explained all of the tours that they offered, explained to us that they are private so we can mix and match if we like, add different adventures or omit ones we were not interested in.
1st excursion - Deep Sea Fishing (I know right, two ladies travelling together, who don't typically go fishing... Why not! ) We caught 10 Mahi Mahi's and had the best time on board with Jose and Carlos ~ We had to option to snorkel, did that many times, decided not to.. but we did dive off the boat into the middle of the ocean and had a little swim. They then took us to a beach and we hiked a small way into the woods where there were tons of Howler Monkey's. Jose tapped on a tree with a stick and sure got them going,,, I was positive King Kong was in the jungle somewhere. ~ We then went to Coco beach and brought our Mahi Mahi's that Carlos was sweet enough to fillet for us and had them cooked up at the restaurant there while we enjoyed a couple of beers. It was battered and deep fried, served with Rice, Beans, Salad and some sort of crunchy banana snack.. truly delicious! We paid $350 total for this 6 hours of awesomeness 4.5 of which we spent fishing, drinking water and beer and eating fresh pineapple that they brought for us!
2nd Excursion ~ Also Private and catered to Just the two of us.. Started out in a private Van with a wonderful driver, And Gustavo (who is Erick's partner and is Such a sweetheart and very knowledgeable) headed to the waterfalls which was pure bliss... We spent about an hour there because we didn't want to get out.. we were able to climb up behind them and Gustavo took several pictures for us. ~We then headed to Zip-lining (They call it Canopy's).. 11 Zips and was amazing, quite a hike to the first one zip though if you have issues with mobility this may not be for you.. Oh and by the way, try it upside down!! Super Fun! ~ After that, we had a lovely Costa Rican Lunch before we rode horses up to see more waterfalls and the hanging bridge which is quite fun to jump on when you are with someone who is scared of heights.. haha.. sorry Manon. We then hiked up the mountain and saw even more beautiful waterfalls and some amazing scenery from the top of the mountain, truly breathtaking.. back down the mountain with the beautiful horses. ~ Next adventure, The Volcano! How freaken cool! down in the crater you can see the mud bubbling, get a true sense for just how hot it is... sure stinks though yuck! I thought it was a septic dump.. sorry best way to describe the smell of the volcano.. We then got in the sauna to open up our pores, drenched ourselves in the natural mud..let it dry.. showered and went into the hot springs.. I highly recommend this excursion to everyone.. was absolutely fantastic. This was a Full day and I believe we paid about $150 each with all admissions and lunch included.. totally worth it..
3rd excursion - Nope, You wouldn't have guessed it... we loved the deep sea fishing so much.. we went again!! We had Jose and Luis this time.. Jose knew that we had already been to the one beach, so he took us to a different beach this time with some really cool caves.. this time we caught about the same amount of Mahi Mahi's.. But I also caught a Tuna.. while we were swimming at the beach, Jose brought us the Tuna all cut up raw with Lemon Juice and Garlic on it... OK, just so you know - This girl is not a fan of raw fish... But I tried it and ended up eating 4 pieces of it, was just delicious! Back to Coco beach again for our Mahi Mahi feast! We only did 3 hours of fishing that day so we could do some shopping in Coco Beach.. Jose took us around and showed us all the best places to shop and again gave us tons of info... and even a little ride on Carlo's dirt bike (only cause we asked).. We got a bit of a better deal that day than the 1st day.. probably because we were repeat customers.
Ok... next excursion.. 4 Wheeling!! WOW!!! Do it, you have to!.. so many different terrain's and awesome views.. plus 4 wheeling is just fun to begin with... Gustavo came with us and was awesome again! We stopped at this place where we paid $5 each to go and visit the snakes and the monkeys... seriously amazing.. I got to hold a Howler monkey and a 6 month old white faced Monkey... I was in love! Stopped at a nice white sand beach, got beat up by some waves.. was amazing.. this was a 4 hour tour and was only $65 each.. unreal and totally worth it!! ~ Though on this one, we did tag along with another family.. by choice, great people!
So, we then ran out of time, and had to come back to Canada.. but I can assure you, I will be back and I will be looking for the blue shirts on the beach.. And will be highly recommending them to all of my clients! Thank you so much Erick and Tavo, it was a real pleasure getting to know both of you and your crew.. a nice touch that Erick and Gustavo met us at the end of our fishing tour both times and Erick had lunch with us and I really feel like I made some new friends. xoxo Pura Vida!

Papagayo Tours advertises their tours as Unforgettable. I agree, but not for reasons they say.
We found Papagayo Tours, run by Erick Escobar & Tavo to be irresponsible and a dangerous operation. One of their places of operation is on the beach near the Rui Guanacaste resort. We have since learned that they are not associated with the hotel.
A man approached us on the beach wearing casual, but obviously, official company issued clothing. He asked us if we would be interested in a tour boat tour. He suggested a ride around the bay where they saw a whale shark just the day before. Included would be snorkeling, time on a beach and even some deep-sea fishing if we wanted to give it a try. Initially he said the tour would last two and a half hours and would include fresh fruit along with some drinks. We told him we would think about it over lunch. During lunch it was decided we would book it for the following morning. The first red flag showed up when we sent our seventeen-year-old granddaughter to book it and she came back with a two-hour contract, not two and a half.
In the morning the boat was half an hour late. Another salesman was on the beach in the same outfit as the guy who booked the tour. He told us a tree had fallen across the road and the captain couldn’t get to the boat on time. It may have been factual.
When the boat finally arrived we were brought on board by the Captain who was maybe in his early twenties, and taken out for our tour. We saw jumping stingrays, some tuna, sea snakes and a couple of mating sea turtles. It was neat to see.
Next was the snorkeling. I was a certified SCUBA instructor for a number of years before I gave it up so I know what to expect. The equipment they supplied was some of the worst crap I have ever seen. It was “Dollar Store” stuff. Not only was it cheap crap, it was old dilapidated cheap crap! We were out there so we gave it a shot. According to our agreement we were to get a guided tour of the Snorkeling Site (a rock out-cropping about four hundred yards off the beach we were to later visit). The tour was to be guided by the Captain. When he hit the water he was gone. He had respectable equipment so he could motor. Thank God I insisted that the girls and wife wore life jackets because he would have been no use at all if there were problems. My wife is not a good swimmer and there was a current. When she went in the water she quickly drifted away from the boat. The Captain never saw her. I got in the water quickly and got to her. I then organized us in two groups because the girls could move faster than we older folks; I put them in the lead. The Captain was out of site by now. He was around the rocks and totally oblivious to his charges. I checked the boats name to see if “Costa Concordia” was painted on it but it wasn’t. At least the Captain of the Concordia waited until the boat was sinking before he took off.
I instructed everyone to stay off the rocks because there would be Sea Urchins on them. Sea Urchins are like little black porcupines stuck to the rocks. When touched, their quills pierce the skin and then break off and begin to sting. It took a lot of effort to stay off these rocks with the crappy equipment we had especially in the current and wave surges; but we all managed to do it. After we circumnavigated the outcropping we found the Captain was back in the boat.
Now the problems started. There was no ladder to get us back into the boat. He expected us to climb up the side of the boat to get back in. My wife an I are in our sixties. My wife is overweight. This was very evident before we went into the water. The girls were able to get back in with some effort. I’m in good shape and I’ve done this sort of thing a lot over the years so I could get in but my wife couldn’t, so I stayed with her. Now things got really worse. Jellyfish started to sting us. The Captain was totally useless. He tried to drag her back first over the outer edge of the boat by pulling on her arms. That stopped and gave up when she screamed in pain. I had to devise a way of getting her back in the boat myself. The only way was to climb up the side of the outboard motor and come over the stern. By the time she was in, her feet were cut, her arms and back were badly bruised, and she was totally exhausted and humiliated.
I should tell you that when we all were back in the boat he offered us a bottle of water. That would be one bottle for the four of us. There was no fruit. Our two hours were up so there would be no beach or fishing. To be fair there was a first aid kit on board which we used to treat the cuts on her feet.
Their boat is not equipped properly for any sort of water sport. There has to be a ladder. The snorkeling equipment they supplied was a joke and potentially dangerous if you needed power to swim in wave surges away from rocks with Sea Urchins. The Captain is either untrained or reckless and neglectful. Finally our contract, although abbreviated from what was first discussed, was not fulfilled.
My recommendation is to avoid Papagayo Tours at all costs. They are going to kill somebody.
If you want to do this sort of thing at the Riu Guanacaste, go through “Scuba Caribe” They have much better equipment, their boats have ladders and they operate a much safer programme. Learn from my mistake!

Had a great day. Rented a big catamaran saw whales, dolphins, turtles, snorkelled and saw barracuda. Erick and Tavo were great. I found them at www.goodtourscr.com and on the beach at Riu Palace Guanacaste.

From the very first email I was comfortable with this company....Let me just say the most proffesional nicest guys EVER and you can see we travel quite a bit. Pick up at Airport was fast and efficient we beat the other folks on our flight by about 30 mins...so no big line at the desk. We booked white water rafting and then after chatting for a long time they sent us t o the BEST ziplines in the area this was our second trip to Costa Rica and we plan on going back but renting a house and avoiding the resort next time we will return and we will book with this comapany because our guides were brothers and the sweetest most proffesional guys I have ever dealt with on vacation.
ALEX... Alex took us white water rafting and back to the airport this man went out of his way to make sure we had the best guide on the river and made ME homemade mango salad answered my hours and hours of endless questions and then on the way back to the hotel took us to a waterfall that was NOT in the package and then a grocery store to buy our coffee and stuff cheaper. It was a long WORK day for him but you would never know it! This man was amazing and sweet and patient and made us feel like family even took us to a typical breakfast on our way back to the airport and showed us his town because we asked him to and made my hsuband and son some homemade cerviche which they said was delicous...We hope to remain friends through email because he made us feel so welcome.
DIEGO...Diego picked us up at the airport helped me decide on our second tour answered my millions of questions. We were running out of cash and Diego stopped at an ATM and some cafe con leche!!! He took us to the zipline tour made sure WE were first in line to zipline and even took care of another family who had a crappy guide that was only in it for him...This man cares about his people and his country! He made my family feel so comfortable he set up for us to have breakfast with Alex and was very patient and kind in taking pictures and video of my family so I didn't have to worry about it and just got to enjoy the actual expierence. We will def be back and will DEF be asking for these brothers to hang out with us!!!! As friends not just tour guides....
