It's my first time in Costa Rica and I wanted to learn to surf. It was an incredible experience, the guys are very cool, they helped me overcome fears at sea and enjoy surfing. I had fun and feel very comfortable while learning. Very grateful for this experience in Santa Teresa and for them! If you want to have fun and learn to surf, I highly recommend the school and experience with pura vida surfers.

We were 4 to Pura Vida Surfers for 1 week.
We went through a French intermediary, Ocean Adventure.
We each paid $1145 for private accommodation with private bathroom for 6 nights, breakfast included, 4 surf lessons, yoga lessons and free access to camp equipment for surfing.
Overall opinion: Very good for surf lessons, very disappointing for accommodation.
My opinion, choose a good accommodation, and surf lessons apart.
1) Accommodation:
Two bedrooms were planned, each with a private bathroom.
We had 2 bedrooms, with a shared bathroom, apart from the bedrooms.
Honestly, it was absolutely not the same rooms in the pictures sent through Ocean Adventure (Ulysse was his name), or the pictures posted on their site.
For this price, the accommodation was definitely a scam (rip off) : closer to a camping than a hotel accommodation. You had to leave the room to go take a shower or go to the toilet, and share the toilet with 4 people.
2) Breakfast :
Negative point: it was not located in the camp, but we had to walk 2 minutes to find it (Eat Street).
Positive point: you can eat at will, and excellent breakfast (Bagels, burritos, waffles, bowls, smoothies…).
3) Camp:
The camp is made up of a few private rooms and dormitories.
No "surf camp" atmosphere, everyone lives their own life, no cohesion, no atmosphere in the common areas.
Appearance of abandoned camp (high season).
Poorly maintained pool is small (but we can see it in the photos sent).
Difficult to find someone who works in the camp to have information (but available on WhatsApp lol).
In real life, I describe this as hostel than a real “surf camp”.
Important fact: works throughout the duration of the stay (construction of new villas): hammer noises, and other motorized instruments and their music from 7am until 7pm.
4) Staff:
Camp managers were a young woman and her partner: Elena welcomed us when we arrived ; very friendly and available. I told her of our dissatisfaction with the accommodation which wasn’t what we paid for : the shared bathroom, and the high price for this type of low-quality room. I also told her of our dissatisfaction with the work and the inconvenience caused. She was sorry and offered us an extra surf lesson. After our discussion, she no longer came to see us, lowered her head when she meet us, and sulked (!!!!).
Amateurism, I’ve never seen that before...
5) Surf lessons :
We were 4 beginners.
Provided by Alan and his colleagues (in English or Spanish), who came to pick us up to the beaches.
Quality lessons: “take off”, how to turn, when and where we had to surf the wave.
Alan and his colleagues were very nice, know the place perfectly and knew how to judge our level to adapt the advice.

Me and my two young boys, ages 6 and 10, had three amazing days surfing with Victor and his crew. The first day, we went over the basics, did pool training, then went up north to were the waves were safer for beginners as the waves were quite high while we were there.
The second and third days, Victor and crew went out of their way to bring us to waves that would work with our ability. Those two days on the water will be some of the most memorable of my life. Both my kids rode beautiful, mellow, green waves and had the time of their life.
I can't say enough good things about Pura Vida. They made our trip to Santa Teresa!

The main owner was two faced. I had a few convos with him and during those, he made fun of his other students for being kooks but pretended to be nice to their face - he in general just said a lot of negative things about a lot of people, not the kind of energy I want around me.
He also offered to pay for a good review - sorry dude, my ethics aren't for sale

This is a lie! Why would we have to pay money for reviews when everyone that surfs with us has positive experiences. I personally talk to everyone that we give lessons to and there was no Julia that had a bad experience. We have had so many people from all over the world say wonderful things about our instruction, now after one student was refused to be given surf lessons for free and told that she should be careful when surfing in groups of people so she doesn´t cause anyone a serious injury, we have been getting many bad reviews from her and her friends! Please stop this immediately!

I stayed on their property for one night of the seven I paid for and this wasn't just a stray bedbug or two, but this was an infestation!!!!!! See photos.
Owners kept insisting they haven't had this problem before, but after I woke up in the middle of the night very itchy, I looked around under sheets and found tons of bed bugs all over the sheets and mattress. So grossed out that I didn't think to check between the sheets.
I got out of there that night (had a very rough night) and came back in the morning to deal with it. The owner wouldn't do anything about it and kept saying it wasn't a problem and the tried to blame me for it - they were extremely rude and unreasonable. They wouldn't give me a refund for the stay or the surf classes (because after that horrible interaction, who wants to surf with them). I regret paying in cash but also just couldn't just sleep there.
This was my first day of vacation from home so there is no way I could have brought in bed bugs.. plus this looked like the bedbugs have been living there for a while.
Also, no one was wearing masks, inside or outside.

This is a complete lie! We have never had bed bugs and never had a person stay with us that requested to leave early and wanted a refund. All of our rooms have been rented long term since October 2020, people pay monthly to live here. Everyone that stays here has been happy and the place is kept clean. You are either intending to write a review of somewhere else or are making up a lie to hurt our business. Please Stop. When reverse googling these images they come up as stock images for bed bugs- ´closeupofbedbug.jpg.
Why are you trying to harm our business? You have never met us, never had surf lessons with us, and definitely never stayed with us. Are you really someone who travels to another country to destroy a local business that has fought to become profitable in a place with few opportunities? Maybe you should go somewhere else next time when you would like to pretend to connect with nature and do yoga. Costa Rica does not need people like you here.

Victor and team are the best! you can always count on them to support you, no matter what your level is. I started as a complete beginner and got to an intermediate level with them, but more importantly - I got the confidence to be in the ocean and deal with any condition.

PROs: The owners are SUPER SWEET, but for the public good.. this place is awful
CONs: This IS NOT a traditional surf camp and it's super DISORGANIZED to the point where it seems scammy + they teach dangerous practices in the water. In the last 5yrs, I’ve been to 10+ camps by now and this is hot-potato mess. They ONLY know how to teach BEGINNERS, but even then, is there really a price to safety?
- NO SURF ETIQUETTE - DANGEROUS:
1) At the point break, I watched the instructors push students to cut off ppl who were already on the wave (BAD!!!)
2) The main instructor, Victor, said it was okay to let go of your board when turtle rolling
3) On a close out-y beach break, they made you line up out of the way to get a push. They yelled at me every time I tried to catch my own wave, away from them, reasoning that b/c we were with all beginners, it’s dangerous. It was illogical / beginners only stuff / just straight bad manners that could get ppl seriously hurt.
- GROUP INTERMEDIATE WITH BEGINNER: Painful, enough said.
- POOR INSTRUCTION / ONLY KNOWS HOW TO TEACH BEGINNERS: There was a beginner level lesson on day 1, then 0 feedback during or post each surf session. All the instruction given was only correct for beginners only too, not intermediate + above. Examples: Telling you to stand taller (not how you surf a short board) and chicken wing + sending you into close outs and telling you to ride the whitewater into the beach.
- COMFORTABLE WITH LIES/LOTS OF FALSE ADVERTISING:
1) I requested a 7’6, he brought an 8’6 and pretended it was a 7’6 until I said I’ve surfed a 7’6 for 5 yrs and knew that board was way too big. Turns out he didn’t have a 7’6 in his quiver and had to go rent one.
2) NOT A CAMP: Did not tell me they were booking me at a separate hotel, it actually works out b/c their property is under construction.. but, it’s false advertising to say you’re a camp when you’re not. It’s a hotel booking service + surf lessons with them, where they make more $ than if you were to book separately just because they're scammy
3) $ SCAM: Claims to give 1 surf lesson/day on website (and also said it in an email), but after I took 4 lessons, they said it would be $55/lesson additional. Said she hasn't updated the website in 5 years.. To this day, they haven’t changed the site.
4) NOT PURA VIDA ADVENTURES: Why did they name themselves after another successful established camp? I definitely confused the two, feels intentionally shady.
5) Victor in general had a meh to negative attitude in the water and about surfers learning to surf. I don't think he likes his job.
- UNPROFESSIONAL: 0 resolution to the above issues when brought up. clearly a backyard chop shop thats barely glued together. There wasn't even the promised fruit everyday and the instructor bummed a ride for me from another student back the last day b/c he wanted to keep surfing.

I stayed here for an amazing 10 days. The rooms are everything I wanted. Big, cleaned every day, safe, and quiet. The location is also perfect, next to the best surf spot and good restaurants. The best thing in this place are the atmosphere and fun vibe.
The reason is the amazing hosts, victor and elena, which did everything to make my vacation perfect. I am coming back for sure!
