There were lots of panels where I could read about the history of the area.There were some exhibition cases with old fossils.There for half an hour.

An absolutely excellent museum. And free! But if you give a donation to the pet pig he will thank you! A lovely touch.
The Charles Dickens section was very good. In fact the standard of all of the displays was very high and totally engaging.

Lovely informative museum and the best part was that it absolutely free which is great considering the work that goes into the upkeep of everything. I was particularly taken by the wide soft red carpeted stairs case. I felt like I had been cast back to the time of Jane Austen.

Thank you for your review. We're really happy that you enjoyed your visit. If you are ever in Rochester again, you might enjoy a visit to Eastgate House. It's one of our sister sites and was once the museum, housing many of the objects you saw at the Guildhall Museum once upon a time.

A quirky museum this one, with some excellent interior architectural decor, a mock-up of the inside of a 'hulk', fascinating anecdotes covering the past, including WWII, and interesting information about Rochester and the surrounding area.

Free to visit, interesting and well laid out. Take time to read the information sheets. The walk through the history of prisoners held on prisons ships moored on the River Medway was fascinating.

I visited this museum as part of a day trip from London on the train (which I recommend). You get the full range of experiences here from the splendid Guildhall itself to a sense of what it was like for prisoners who were transported on ships. I was not familiar with the term "prison hulk" before visiting here, and they did a fine job reconstructing it (at full scale) and showing visitors how awful that truly was.
The price is free - it is a bargain indeed!

Superb museum with some very unusual exhibits, and situated in a historic C17th Guildhall. The opulence of the Guildhall contrasts greatly with one of the more striking exhibits, that of the Thames Prison Hulks, which amongst others had former French Napoleonic prisoners. highlighting the dismal, insanitary conditions they endured.
Being Medway naturally navel history and its role in the town feature heavily. Other exhibits just add to this excellent museum, and its free ( although donations happily accepted.

Do you have any written factsheets about the Prehistoric Medway Exhibition as I visited with my autistic daughter and I didn't get chance to read all the information. I would be most grateful for a response ad I thought it was very intereting.
