Very interesting exhibitions, informative volunteer and plenty to see in the ruins with useful display boards.

One of the really great abbeys, well maintained and with a helpful audio guide. There is a good room to see archives as well. Seriously worth a visit.

Access through shop and cafe. Car park not huge but we got there before people started arriving for the Christmas service. Cars then parked up the road which was already narrow. The Abbey would have been a magnificent place and you can see all the buildings around the main area.

A very imposing Abbey set in the glorious Yorkshire countryside. Took a while to find a parking spot as it is very popular attraction

Great for a short visit and to take photographs. Appears to be under some restoration at the moment, but great to see!

In hindsight should have joined English Heritage before our North Yorkshire trip, as ended up at so many of their locations.
Rievaulx was actually the reason for visiting he area, purely based on a advert we'd seen. But that did not do the place justice after seeing it in person.
It was August bank holiday Monday and wanted to avoid Whitby, but was surprised how quiet Rievaulx was. Parked in the village field (honesty box for contributions) and during our wander around the Abbey saw maybe 12 other people.
Admittedly the weather was sun / rain shower (rinse and repeat) but this added to the charm when we had to shelter under doorways or stonework.
The ruins are extensive and whilst we didn't use the audio tour the description boards were excellent.
Well worth visiting the area just for the Abbey!

The most impressive abbey ruins we saw on our trip. The location tucked away down by the River Rye is so picturesque and quiet, you can listen to the audio tour and just image what it was like 1000 years ago. The ruins themselves are impressively large and stunning given how exposed they are.

We are staying in Helmsley soon. Is it far to walk from there? Also is it a large site to walk around?

I didn’t walk to the site but as per Google maps it is 3mils - just over 1h walk from Helmsley.
The site is not very small but not very big either and it’s easy to walk around.
how to visit it, traveling from london??

We drove and it was a long way. 3 or 4 hrs I would guess. But it was. A great drive and worth it.

I'm very surprised by your review, how can you not just be in wonder and intrigue as you walked around the site? The history seeping from the magnificent ruins from nearly 900 years ago! The presbytery of the church, one of the finest examples of early English architecture. The magnificent refectory and the remains of the undercroft below. The monks choir and crossing in the south transept, with the doorway still in tact leading to the dormitory. The remarkable, unusual chapter house with its shrine to Abott William dating from 1250. The beautiful cloister with details like the piscine(holy water basin) Do I need to go on?
Rievaulx Abbey was a major architectural influence on the medieval monastic church from the 12th to the 16th centuries and, from the mid 18th century. Rievaulx includes some of the earliest surviving buildings of any Cistercian monastery in Europe.
Abott William's stone monastery was the first great Cistercian church to be built in England on the model of the church and claustral layout that was being developed at Clairvaux from about 1135. That makes Rievaulx one of the earliest surviving examples in Europe of what subsequently became the standard plan for all Cistercian abbey's, and for those of the other major monastic orders.
Maybe you should visit other places other than ones like Rievaulx Abbey, as you clearly have no interest, understanding, or appreciation, of fine pieces of vastly important places of history in England.
Go back, get the audio guide, and try to appreciate how lucky you are to be able to visit and learn about this remarkable place.

Hi there,
I'm planning on visiting on either weekend of 8/9 April or Monday 10 April - would you be able to advise of opening days/times around that period, I'm trying to arrange the rest of my trip around this, so would be hugely grateful if there's any info you could provide!

Hi,
You can find all relevant data on the website of English Heritage.
I think that all English Heritage properties have opening hours in period April to September from 10:00 to 18:00.

It took me 3 hours but I took it slow and read everything! There is also the adjoining (small) museum and gift shop which I recommend you spend some time in too. If it doesn't rain, it's a beautiful place to just chill. Have a picnic too!

Hi, Rievaulx Abbey allows dogs on site as long as they're on leads. The only parts they can't go are into are the cafe or the museum. We have dog water available and outside seating by the cafe so pooch can be with you while you have tea and cake.
Of the 400 or so English Heritage sites in our care, dogs are allowed in around 390. We aim to be as dog friendly as possible. The only sites where dogs aren't allowed are where there is rare wildlife or delicate items around such as at Mount Grace Priory or the Cold War Bunker in York. You can take dogs into Helmsley Castle, Pickering Castle, Kirkham Priory, Scarborough Castle and Whitby Abbey in the local area. Hope that helps.
