I visited this place in the Summer and managed to get on one of the tours led by an enthusiastic gentleman.
They say this castle inspired Walt Disneys ‘fairytale castles’ but who knows?
One thing for sure is that the outside of the castle has been restored beautifully. My husband was fascinated to find out about the restoration project.
It’s well worth a visit but if you want to look inside the castle choose a sunny day as tours are limited through the day and you may have some waiting time, like us.

We visited on a lovely day but on arrival castle closed for winter.
We had looked on informative site which had castle open.
Learning must use national trust site for info .
Although disappointed we spent a lovely afternoon walking grounds and had a picnic.
One area which is a shame is toilets closed for People out walking grounds.
We will go visit again when opens as we are trust members

Had a great visit, guided by Ellen. Such a beautiful pink castle and so interesting to learn about the history. Spiral staircase and internal steps too care.

So disappointing to not be able to get into the castle, we had been so excited to go and see it but there are very few tours available and you can’t go in without being part of a tour. There is no way to book a tour in advance unfortunately. It’s a beautiful castle and lovely to walk around outside but we would love yo have been able yo go inside. It would just be luck if you managed to go and actually get a spot on a tour of the castle. Highly recommended castle Fraser if you’d like to go inside a castle not too far from Craigievar.

We arrived on a rainy day (of which there are many in Scotland!) The only way to access the castle is via a guided tour and we were told the next one was in an hour’s time. We’d come a long way to visit the castle, but there were few places to keep dry and we gave up in the end. A shame…but the systems they have in place are not very user-friendly.

This season the castle has been extremely busy and this has meant that there are long waits to get on a tour. We are restricted to 10 people per tour to preserve the property and contents as well as providing a safe environment for visitors. This also limits the number of tours we can run per day. We do not allow pre-booking by phone or online as when we tried it, in the past, it was abused by a number of people when they either failed to turn up or turned up late for the tour they had booked. No system is ideal but the one we currently have in place works for the most part. However, there is a possibility of a long wait at busy times and we don't have the facilities to provide shelter when it is wet. The space inside the castle is limited to the old wine cellar / dungeon which has some seating; again this is not ideal but currently it is all we have.

The tour guide for this castle was brilliant. Gentle, knowledgeable and really funny. The castle itself is an amazing piece of living history visited occasionally but its now elderly former inhabitants.
Even our teenage girls loved it and naturally, had to have many photos taken in front of this magical castle.

This is the first visit to Craigievar since it reopened after some refurbishment. This is a National Trust for Scotland property, free to members. Highly recommended joining as we recouped our annual membership fee visiting properties over this single weekend. Although there are some walks in the grounds, we concentrated on the castle itself. Visits are by guided tour only (every 30 minutes) and you can only book in person. Arriving at 10:30 for the castle opening, the first tour was at 10:45 and by the time we left on it, it was fully booked. When we finished an hour or so later, people were being told they’d have to wait an hour for a tour, so probably better to get here early on a weekend or during tourist season. The guide was really knowledgeable about the history of the castle and the tour included a few ghost stories, which I always feel add to the entertainment value. The castle is said to have inspired Walt Disney’s Cinderella castle and you can see why, with all the turrets giving it a real fairy tale feel.

Returned after a near 40 year gap since our last visit.
Raining heavily - that happens - but nowhere to ‘hang out’ whilst waiting for an hour for a tour.
Understand the reasons re the tour system and lack of pre-booking but we were soaked and didn’t fancy waiting around in the rain for an hour for a tour. I volunteer for the NT and have visited numerous properties. Never encountered this experience which, in effect, resulted in a wasted (and long) trip. As we were deciding whether or not to tough out the weather spoke to a number of other visitors who, like us, decided to leave without actually visiting the inside of the castle. They too were soaked (no one’s fault) but frustrated at the lack of shelter which was needed due to the length of the wait.
My advice - if you can (we couldn’t) - go when it’s sunny.

This castle is a gift to photography and makes a stunning backdrop. Internal visits are by guided tour only. We got the last 2 places but would have been hugely disappointed if we hadn't as there's not a lot to do otherwise if faced with a wait.
The tour was really interesting and the guide was very knowledgeable.
The stairs are not for the faint-hearted and may deter those less mobile.

A great morning at Craigievar Castle. Sophie, our guide, was fantastic! She was so knowledgeable about the history of the castle and she delivered the this in a very engaging way, with some humour for good measure. I'd recommend a visit if in the area.

The e car park charge is £3 and at the moment it is cash only; we hope to accept cards in the not too distant future.

The grounds are open from sunrise to sunset and you are welcome to picnic here; we have a kiosk which serves takeaway hot & cold drinks, sweets, crisps, ice-creams and pre-wrapped cakes.

Don't remember gates. I would say you should be able to drive to car park then walk in the grounds and round the castle. There are holiday cottages in the grounds at the rear of the castle and I would say they will have open access from the main road.

There are no age restrictions for children visiting the castle; however, access to the upper floors is via quite narrow, steep, stone spiral staircases which can present problems for very young children. It can also be difficult to carry very young children on the stairs due to width, steepness and headroom, it is for this reason that we don't allow backpacks in the castle.
The one area we do not allow children is the viewing platform on the roof due to access.

Guided tours last between 45 minutes and an hour, numbers are restricted to 10 per tour for conservation purposes and also to ensure you get the best experience of the interior. They are "first come, first served" and run about every 30 minutes.
