Wij zijn met de hele familie naar Veurne afgezakt en reserveerden bij de dienst cultuur en toerisme een picknick en wandeling in het park. Heel lekkere picknick, vers stokbrood en allemaal streekproducten. Voor de kinderen een aangepaste versie met een klein rugzakje met boekje als extraatje. Personeel van de dienst toerisme is supervriendelijk. De picknick in het park is meer dan een aanrader !
Picknick is betalend maar zijn geld waard.

For such a small park, Saint Walburga Park has a lot to offer: shady trees and winding paths, a playground, picnic tables on the lawn around the cast iron band stand dating from 1899, and lovely views on the St. Walburga Church and the Town Hall and Belfry. There are also several monuments and sculptures. We spotted ‘Women looking at the sun’ (1981) by George Grard, ‘Two Guards’ by Belgian singer, writer, painter and sculptor Willem Vermandere, a statue of Belgian singer/songwriter Will Tura playing music and a bust of painter Paul Delvaux. The stone ’sleepers’ bench’ (‘slapersbank’ in Dutch), which is decorated with a relief representing a sleeping figure, is inspired by the historic nickname of the inhabitants of Veurne, the sleepers. At Heldenplein, near one of the entrances, there are several war memorials for the civilian and the military victims of both World Wars and a relief of King Albert I.
Saint Walburga Park is also steeped in history. Its highest part was the medieval motte. The moat, at the foot of the mound is now market with blue ceramic tiles. We also had a look at the portal of the west tower of St. Walburga Church, which was never completed due to lack of funds. Over time the construction served as gunpowder magazine, cistern and bomb shelter during WW II. A few faded sculptures remain.

In feite paalt dit erg knap aangelegd park aan de Grote Markt van dit kleine maar zeer mooi polderstadje! Het is een oase van rust maar ge vindt er ook een aantal kunstwerken o.m. een hommage aan P. Delveaux die hier leefde en werkte.

Ce parc est situé derrière l'église Ste Walburge. Pour s'y rendre l'on profitera du parking gratuit de la grande place. Ce parc n'est pas très vaste, mais il est agréable. C'est un havre de paix, un lieu très reposant.

Veurne is een kleinere stad, maar met een aangename markt met terrasjes en de Walburgakerk. Er zijn mooie kunstwerken te zien en af en toe concerten en tentoonstellingen. De woensdag is het markt, leuk te combineren!
Gemakkelijk te bereiken met auto, bus, tram plus trein via De Panne. Links voor je naar de kerk gaat is er een bureau van toerisme, onder in het oude stadhuis, waar je een wandelplan van de stad kan krijgen.

Dopo aver visto la stupenda piazza di Veurne, siamo andati a vedere la chiesa di Sint Walburgakerk. Dietro a questa, si trova questo parco. Non è grande, ma delizioso, con panchine per fare pic-nic o soste; a giugno era molto fiorito. Salendo leggermente sulla sinistra (considerato l'ingresso dalla parte della chiesa) si possono fare belle foto con la chiesa di Walburgakerk.

We waren van plan om de mooie Walburgakerk te bezoeken en we kregen er dit mooie park als weggestoken verrassing op de koop toe. Ideaal plekje om tijdens een stadswandeling wat uit te rusten, of je picknick te nuttigen in deze rustige oase midden in de stad.

That is the feeling we got when visiting this park in the centre of Veurne. The quiet and the old buildings bring peace to the mind. Beautiful area!

Next to the church is this lovely Park with a very good playground. Our son enjoyed to play here while we took a break during our visit.

Situated by the church, and with views of many of the other old town centre buildings, this peaceful little park almost feels like a piece of the ancient fabric of the town.
