We toured the medieval Marksburg Castle that is beautifully preserved and has a distinctive free-standing tower. We visited the armory that housed varied armor suits and weaponry. We also went down to the wine cellar, viewed aging wursts, surveyed the kitchen where we saw an unwanted dinner guest. The blacksmith shop where tools were fashioned, horses shoed and wheelwrights plied their trade was interesting. The castle contained beautiful art on walls and ceilings as well as hand-carved wooden doors. The whole structure was quite remarkable, considering that it has been around since the middle ages.

The Marksburg can only be visited as part of a guided tour. The price is currently €11 per adult. There is no discount for seniors. Just for the sour face of the cashier, when I asked about it, and the answer "they are not a state castle," there is a point deduction. What kind of argument is that? After all, this is where the Castle Association sits. 4€ parking fee has already been paid halfway to the castle. I do not want to imagine what would have happened if one of the many coaches had met us on the narrow road.
Access and the entire tour of the castle are not barrier-free and can only be accessed with good footwear.
The tour guide was nice, but rattled down his text quite quickly and I didn't learn much in terms of content. After all, he tried to send the American family some more info bites in English.
The tour leads through some well-prepared rooms, into the small herb garden (photo point over the Rhine!) and along the battery and lasted pretty much exactly an hour. Overall quite interesting and informative, but it did not excite us.

The Marksburg Castle is an incredible structure with great views of the hills and valleys but if you are going with a tour, find out how many people they will include in your group. Our group had about 40 people and that was too large because many of the rooms are small and the passages are narrow so you won't hear much of the tour guide's comments if you stay at the front of the pack. I think 20 would be a much better limit for a group size.

A remarkable place - overlooking the Rhine and the charming town of Braubach (which is very much a traditional Rhineland town), a true medieval fortress - not a modernised castle-looking house like so many castles on the Rhine. So it requires effort - both to climb up from the town and to get around, but it is well worth the effort. The staff are knowledgeable and enthusiastic - and their English is excellent so the English speaking tours at 1300 and 1600 each day are the times to go for non German speakers. A friend and myself got to the Marksburg at 1200 - but we had lunch in the, very good, restaurant, overlooking the Rhine and the hills, before the tour.
I have one criticism - visitors are not allowed to climb to the top of the highest tower, the watch tower. Even though I am told that there is nothing wrong with the tower. Yes it would be a difficult staircase for some people - but people could be warned about that and make their own decision. To stand by the flag at the very highest point of the castle, overlooking the Rhineland, would be excellent - and I was disappointed that I was not allowed to do it. I am a 59 year old fat man - but I would still have liked to be allowed to try. I hope they change their policy and allow future visitors to climb to the very top.

A visit to this fully intact medieval castle is a must when in Koblenz. It is one of the best preserved as it has never been captured or destroyed. You need to join a guided tour and enter through the Fox Gate along a very uneven stone path. There are some quite steep areas so this is not suitable for anyone with walking difficulties. The interior is amazing and you get a good picture of what life must have been like as you visit the kitchen, bedroom, great hall, and chapel. Then it's on to the armory and some rather vicious-looking weapons. A great tour!

My friends and I toured the Marksburg Castle in Braubach and really enjoyed the entire tour. Our guide was young and enthusiatic and know his history!! It was fascinating to hear all about the castle and it's history and to learn about how it has been preserved through the years. This tour was definitely worth the cost.

This is a guided tour. Some are conducted in German, some in English - our guide was speaking in German but she helped (on her own accord) to translate for us. She was also very helpful in photographs and answering our queries.
My take on why you should come, is that this castle is to me, a “virgin castle”. You see, it hasn’t been ravaged, it hasn‘t been invaded. So much (if not all) of the artillery inside is pristine. Even the tortue instruments have apparently not been used. It was an eye-opening experience to see the stables, dining areas, kitchen, chess area, reading area, bed rooms (i think not every room was opened for visitors… because we only saw one room), herb garden, etc etc.
Elderly visitors need to walk really carefully - much of the open spaces have slippery uneven stone floors. Grab the railings wherever available. I hate to sound pessimistic, but my negative predictions often come true.,. Some day, some elderly (with or without a stick) is going to slip and fall on the way up or down (the start and end of the tour)….

We visited Marksburg as part of our Viking cruise. Marskburg is a stunning castle sitting high on a hill overlooking the Rhine.
From the bus drop off point there is a fairly steep climb to the castle. For most people it isn't much of an issue but if you have mobility issues it is pretty intense and once you get inside the castle a lot of the floor is extremely rough so I wouldn't recommend visiting at all to people with any sort of mobility issue (Apparently at some point in the past they decided to remove the floor and did .
There were multiple Viking boat groups there and we had to wait a while before our tour could begin. Fortunately the waiting spot had an amazing view of the castle and the river and the weather was lovely.
Our tour was pretty good with lots of information about the castle. The castle is not very big so the tour did not take very long. There was only a couple of rooms. I was disappointed we didn't get to go up to the top of the main tower!

This is a very unusual German castle in that it has never been destroyed, meaning that there are many original features to be seen. In particular, there are original stairs at times - so there are some quite tricky surfaces in terms of unevenness, but it’s all part of the charm.
We visited as part of our river cruise holiday, so were taken round in a group. I think all visitors are taken as a group even if you arrive independently. Our leader was called Kai; he was very interesting and had a great way of explaining things, but his (very good) English could be quite hard to understand at times as he spoke quite fast but with a strong accent.
The tour takes just over an hour and is quite a thorough exploration of the public rooms, which have been very well recreated as in medieval times. Highlights for me were the kitchen and chapel, although the walls and ceilings of many rooms were attractive in their own right. There are quite a few staircases, often narrow, within the castle, as well as the main entranceway at the beginning/end of the tour based round the original stairs in plus of course the steep hill to get up from the car park in the first place.

I have a choice of seeing Marksburg Castle or ehrenbreitstein Fortress on my Viking River Cruise. Which is more noteworthy?
撰写日期:2019年5月20日
The Marksburg Castle tour is very tough. It is a about 1/2 to 3/4 mile climb from the bus up several switchbacks. Then when you are on the tour inside the castle, there are a lot of big rough coblestones, inclines and stairs. We went on this tour and it was very tough on my wife. It will be the hardest walking tour on your cruise. We had some friends traveling with us and they went to the Ehrenbreistein Fortress because the husband has trouble walking and uses a cane. Hope this helps.

Two questions:
Will Marksburg Castle be open on Dec 18-21?
Which is the best way to get to the castle from Cologne?
撰写日期:2018年10月11日
Take Highway 3 south out of Cologne. Then 48 to 42. Will take about an hour and a half. You might want to check their website for their opening times.

I'd like to take the train from Frankfurt and I find that to get to Marksburg I need to get off the train in Spay. Its on the opposite side of the Rhine and Im wondering if there is a ferry? How do I get across to Braubach?
撰写日期:2018年9月24日
Take the train from Frankfort to Braubach - they have their own train station. There are several direct route options daily - its a 2 hour train ride. From the train station in Braubach its a 30 minute walk up to Marksburg Castle. We did this a few months ago.
Visit raileurope website and put in your journey from Frankfort to Braubach to see options.

Are there railings on the steps and inclines going up and down to Marksburg? I'm just as concerned about going down...that's usually where I have more of a problem.
撰写日期:2018年7月25日
It’s not really an easy place for those who are unsteady on their feet as the inclines in the castle are uneven and there are lots of cobbles. The steps up from the car park are pretty steep and hard for the unfit although there are railings and you can take your time. Coming down is ok but the steps descend through trees and woodland so can get slippery.

Hi = you said your husband went alone due to the strenous walk to the castle. Did you remain on the grounds or in the transport or stay behind in the city or on the ship? I am in same position with a recent fall
撰写日期:2018年3月11日
Hi. About Marksburg Castle, there is a shuttle that takes you most of the way. We did not stay behind as we have no problems walking, but I cautioned those who may. After getting off the shuttle, There are then about 90 stairs to climb to get to bottom of the Castle. After that a walking tour ascends upward along passages once used by knights on horses. I think I posted a picture of the rock walkway. Very old and rutted. If you can just go slow, you probably can do it. One lady on our tour got personal walking tours due to limited mobility. Talk to your ship’s concierge. They may work something out.

можно ли доехать до замка на каком-то транспорте? Там вроде есть какой-то паровозик. Где его остановка, и какое расписание?
撰写日期:2017年11月20日
Is there a bus, shuttle, tram, or any other form of public transportation that runs from Braubach to the castle parking lot?
撰写日期:2017年10月10日
Thank you everyone for taking time to respond! The staff from Marksburg Castle also responded by email to say that the only transportation to the castle is by taxi--no bus or tram.
