Stunning scenery! Easy walking track, dog friendly. Five minutes out of Cromwell, child friendly. Plenty of opportunities for a great photo op

Felt like another world. Great desert experience. Can walk up to two hours if you’d like to do the full loop. Great scenery.

Did this walk on a beautiful sunny autumn day the colours in the trees and surroundings was stunning.
We completed the full circuit which was a very comfortable walk we did it in a anti clock wise direction which was a nice walk, great historical information along the way which was very interesting.
Amazing what the old timers achieved incredible stone dam at the top,
Highly recommend this walk took about one and half hours with photo and reading information well worth it

Loved this, highly recommend, very interesting- didn't take us quite as long as sign suggested- the times must allow for reading the information, photos etc...which we did, but we comfortably did the 1.5 hr loop in 1.25 hrs with photo stops, etc. I could enjoy going back there. Historical info. Saw families enjoying the walk. Suitable for everyone interested in a bit of history and quite varied scenery....unique. Would be quite an exposed walk on a very hot or cold day, so dress appropriately.

It’s a big area where the landscape has got totally modified by the sluicing operations and it looks like the California badlands. It was a really interesting walk and we enjoyed it. Lots of information boards. Stewarttown was a highlight with the old house amongst the old apple and pear trees. You could just imagine the families and kids running around.

We visited the Bannockburn Sluicings Walks yesterday and walked the loop track in an anticlockwise direction. The walk was fantastic and the landscape, like many others have said, was like very few others you will see on walks in New Zealand. It was especially meaningful to myself as my great great grandfather was a digger at Bannockburn and was actually arrested there with some of his colleagues in 1870 for sheep rustling. Awesome to see the type of place he would have been living in at the time. But back to the walk, as others have said, it takes about one and a half hours to do the loop track and take in Stewart Town. We did it in this time with three children and a certain amount of photo taking and climbing in and out of tunnels. The view from the top is awesome. We went in the steeper direction as climbing up into Bailey’s Gully seemed to provide a scenic view on the way up. Coming down the other side was then a gentle, easy roll back down to the carpark. It is quite cool and damp in Central Otago at the moment when compared to normal summer temperatures, meaning it was sunny but cool when we did the walk. This was a good thing as I can imagine it gets pretty hot and dry out the track on other days. The wild thyme added to the goldfields feel. As others have said, you can smell it all around the track. The information boards around the track were very informative, although the walking times for return to the carpark at various points were a bit askew. We also visited the General Store at Bannockburn township. There is an old slicing jet sitting outside the front which was helpful for explaining to my kids what had caused the landscape. In all, even if you aren’t descended from a miner I would highly recommend this walk!

Well worth a visit. Great combination of gold rush history and scenery. The well-signposted loop track takes 1-1.5 hours. Undulating trail but not too strenuous. The landscape, produced by goldmine sluicing is incredible. DOC signage along the route explains the gold mining history. There’s a small car park but no other facilities.

On a hot day, you really don't want to walk up hill to see a tourist site, but the workers did that daily and were unsure if they could make a living. The geography is almost unreal, but the loop walk is not difficult and you finish the walk down hill. Be sure to carry some water with you on a hot day.

Der Walk ist etwas abseits der üblichen Route aber einen Abstecher wert.
Sonnencreme und -schutz nicht vergessen, da komplett in der Sonne. Gleicht einer Wild-West Landschaft.
Einige Infoschilder und verschiedene (teilweise schlecht beschilderte) Abstecher (z. B. Zum Steindamm).
