My husband and I traveled a 300-mile trip wanting to come for over a decade. Finally making the trip on a very wet day to celebrate my 60th birthday. When we arrived at this working station which was faithfully restored station by volunteers. It was complete with 1940's bogies and cases, geraniums and bunting. We went in full 1940's dress and were met by staff including Michael who was a young railwayman working at the station when Brief Encounter was made. His insights from the filming were just wonderful., There was a wonderful David Lean exhibition, with family donated items which was spectacular. A railway exhibition and train scene box set for photos. Our favourite part of the Centre was the beautiful vintage cinema with plush red velvet push up seats. Staff offered to take photos for us in the cinema and box set and were warm and friendly. They were so knowledgeable about the film and we learned a lot more about my favourite film and its shooting from people directly involved in 1945. Our visit was a truly magical experience. It was very inexpensive. We felt like we were so very welcome and enjoyed real Lancashire hospitality. This is a very special place, very alive and inclusive. It's truly interactive and unstuffy and all about people their love for this railway and film and their wish to give visitors the warmest and best experience. Nothing is too much trouble. Its like stepping back into another era and a unique and truly magical experience. We spent the day there as there is so much to do. There was no charge for watching the film in the cinema, just a small donation of £2 or whatever more a person wanted to give in a little wooden box. We gave more as we know all donations go to the Centre upkeep. We purchased beautiful souvenirs in the shop including a set of four postcards, a wooden film poster, a station badge and four keyrings all at very modest prices. There were glass cases of beautiful 1940's vintage jewellery for sale at small prices. There was also a refreshment room by the centre complete with tea urns seen in the film and beautiful cakes, pastries and hearty meals on offer. Carnforth Heritage Centre is a jewel in Lancashire's crown. A really spectacular treat for visitors and everything we hoped for and so much more. DON'T WAIT TREAT YOURSELVES AND FRIENDS TODAY.

Another recommendation so once moored up we walked down to the working railway station of Carnforth to visit. One of the few stations where you are allowed onto the platforms without a ticket (try that down in London), and we first partook in some refreshment. This was in the form of a bacon butty and coffee. Whilst demolishing these, we saw the ploughmans and seafood platters go past - missed those ones so will have to return to check these ones out!! Once all finished these, the kids of course required dessert and settled with a homemade ice cream milkshake - with multiple flavours to choose from - the Oreo ones were both chosen and so they were happy!! We then explored the history via the many rooms adjacent to the refreshment area, talk about going back in time - weekend in Edinburgh for 1 & 6 et al!!! The kids loved the Brief Encounter area with the hats and jackets to dress up in and have the obligatory photos! The gift shop had so much choice and therefore purchased for the little ones! Brilliant all round and look forward to returning as mentioned above!!

The Heritage Centre is run by volunteers and there are various rooms with exhibits of of which the largest has seating so that you can watch a dvd on loop about the history of the station. Brief Encounter is also available in another room. Had a coffee and cake in the Refreshment Room of which there is a very good selection to choose from in respect of the latter. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

First of all, this review concerns the heritage centre, AND NOT the Refreshment Room which should be treated as a separate entity.
It’s my second visit to Carnforth Station, first was 2020 when everything was still closed due to covid, so I was delighted to find it back up to speed. The centre is brilliant, loved every minute, especially the David Lean room, and the fact that Brief Encounter is screened on a loop. The people (volunteers) are lovely and so knowledgeable. They love their work!
Highly Recommended!

A very informative and interesting station. The cafe is lovely however, when we were there it was practically empty and one staff member was very noisy so we left. Never-the-less, we really enjoyed the visit and were happy to donate to the work the volunteers and staff are doing to preserve it.

This is a free entrance attraction; there’s discrete donation boxes. Volunteers run the Heritage Centre and are very helpful and friendly ; they seem passionate and proud of the centre.
A classic film “Brief Encounter” based on a Noel Coward play was made in 1945 and the station films , trains and station buildings were used for the atmospheric night time scenes . The Heritage centre runs this film (free) daily and focuses mainly on this . It also features rooms with videos of steam trains and LOTS of steam train memorabilia .
There’s a licensed cafe bar that reproduces faithfully the 1945 set where the romantic and quite funny scenes were set.
It’s an excellent visit and fascinating for film buffs and families.
There’s a great shop that sells lots in relation to “Brief Encounter” and to the steam engine era and also local history .
The car park is £2 for four hours ( it’s the railway station car park)
Also on the platform there’s a large model railway shop .
Ideally, watch the film “Brief Encounter” before you go and check the website for opening times .

Drove from the Lakes where we were staying. SO disappointed to find it closed on a Saturday! Only open Monday to Friday. Why? We live too far away to visit again.

We are currently open Monday to Friday having lost nearly half of our volunteers over the very difficult last 18 months.
Now that some feel able to return we will also be opening on Saturdays during the summer months.
The clock is privately owned and has been taken away for repairs - we have no control over when it will return.

I love Brief Encounter so whilst spending a weekend in Morecambe I was really pleased to be able to go & visit the film site. Sadly although the leaflet in my B&B said open daily the Heritage Centre is actually closed at weekends so apaprt from looking through a few windows (having used the refereshment room & toilets) through the corridor that was all I saw, which was very dissapointing. When I asked the waitress in the tea room she told me & another lady that the Heritage Centre is always shut at weekends now & they get a lot of dissapointed customers going in. I live in the other end of the country & not likely to be up that way again in the foreseeable future so won't be making a return visit. Parts of the actual station are looking very shabby, which doens't reflect well on the train company who have home of Brief Encounter signs up everywhere, you'd think they would renovate all the station or at least paint it!

A delightful experience, especially if you are a train or Brief Encounter fan. Lovely friendly and helpful staff, the 1945 Brief Encounter film is playing in a mini cinema, so excellent activity for a rainy day. Probably not ideal for a young family due to it being quite historical and right next to the main line.

This is a must visit while in Carnforth. The one thing that makes the town famous is the clock from the film Brief Encounter, so you must visit. Very cool

I live fairly locally and have passed it many times by rail through the hundreds of old trains and decaying carriages stored there. Are they part of the museum - and are you allowed to get a close look at them - I would be very interested

How long should I allow to enjoy the facilities? I am planning a visit with a party of 14 to visit the Heritage Centre early to mid afternoon on a Saturday in September 2017. Thank you.

The visitor centre does not need that long. An hour to hour and a half would be all you need plus any time for the cafe.
