The First Nations village that used to be called Kitwanga is now called Gitwangak. It's famous for its totem poles. The Totem poles were erected between 1840 and 1842, Each totem pole tells a story about each clan.
This unique location allowed me to see a historic Christian church and ancient totem poles almost side by side.
I was in awe! Imagine being able to admire historic landmarks of two different cultures half a block from each other. It’s truly a majestic sight.
I had the added enjoyment of talking to an elderly man. Mr. Harvey Fowler shared a few interesting remarks about his village. It was a special moment in time!

This is rather a sad sight of a Church that once was. However, as with the totem poles they slowly age and go back to the earth.

This church needs renovations before it is too late. I noted in 2005 the missing tiles and holes in the roof and the partial basement/crawlspace under the altar of the building was looking so uncared for. This spring February I trudged through snow and no improvement insight. Where was/is the pride and love for history? I recall the fundraising and building of the belltower by the residents of Kitwangak the pride displayed. Weddings, funerals, christenings and Sunday services were they for nothing? The old gal needs a huge helping hand and fast before the ground swallows her up.

We didn't go into the church, but looking through the window; the interior looked nicely kept with nice stain glass windows. The old bell tower is severely weathered, as are the totem poles.

This is an old and well-preserved piece of the local church history. Sadly, it was locked; we're unsure whether it always is. or we were just unlucky.

Poor bell tower was rebuilt in 1979 yet it looks more tattered than the totems and the church next to it. Hopefully it can be fixed before completely falling apart. Very interesting architecture in a small package. It's less than 30 seconds off the main highway - worth a stop.

A historic church, built in the early 1900s or sooner. A must to visit. And close by are the totem poles of the Gitwangak, which reflect the history of their respective Traditional Territories.

St. Paul’s Anglican Church in the community of Kitwanga (Gitwangak) is a small but interesting stop. Built over 120 years ago – around 1882 – the church sits as a constant reminder of Canada’s colonial past and imperial history. I think it is no coincidence that, a mere half a block away, there sits a set of ten totem poles, which were erected between 1840 and 1842 – some 40 years before the church. Thus, we are provided with a unique window into two distinct cultures and religious views. The ten totems, if read and understood properly, clearly articulate the life of a people and their complex society pre major Christian influence. The church, on the other hand, points the way to changing norms and values betwixt and between the communities.

Viewing the church as a single entity, one cannot help but marvel at how well it has been preserved over the past century. Captured at the right moment, the church and its equally impressive bell tower make for a fantastic photo – one that is of postcard quality. Once finished here, walk a half block down the road and admire the totems, weathered by the elements but still beautiful, intricate and willing to tell a story if only we have but ears to listen.

Taken together, though, St. Paul’s Church and the ten totems serve as a wonderful microcosm of history – a history that we ignore at our own peril. The past has a lot to teach us. We just need to be patient with the unraveling of each layer.

Having not had time to much research prior to arrival we had many questions about the church, bell tower and poles as well as the surrounding area. We had also just come from Ksan and were somewhat expecting something similar. Not disappointed just wishing we had been more prepared and had done more research other than points of interest we wanted to stop at on our road trip. Kids enjoyed ringing the bell in the tower and climbing to the top.

This is a very unique location allowing visitors to see a historic Christian church and ancient totem poles side by side.

It is the separate wooden bell tower that stands out and is visible from the highway (East side of Hwy 37). Keep your eyes out for it to find the turn off - there is no signage leading the way. I was very impressed how well preserved the small church and the bell tower appeared. I don't think I have ever seen anything similar before!

And only a few steps further, you find a set of ancient totem poles. I wish there was any interpretive signage but unfortunately, the visitor has to do her own research before heading out there. Or stop at the local visitor information centre - for which we had not time, unfortunately.
