Lots to do in the park and not far from communities
We tent camped at La Manche park in a few sites, and found the last loop with sites 60-70 are quiet, mostly tents, and nice views of the pond. There are pit toilets and they were usually stocked with tp and have a solar light. There are trails to the beach and day-use area (incl. comfort station that has proper toilets and showers, and a laundry room), and a trail from there to the waterfall swimming hole. Lovely nature trail and not a difficult walk. There is no cell service or internet in the park but you can get some if you drive up to the main road.

From the park, you can also hike to the ECT and suspension bridge at the former La Manche village site. That is a more difficult walk and requires more planning and proper footwear (even if you drive to the start up the road from the park, though you can start the hike within the park if you have more time and energy).

Scenery & History meet
From the Highway turnoff there is a 10 min drive on a dirt road full of potholes and then a 1.4 km hike down to the abandoned fishing village of la Manche which is beautifully located at the end of a fjord, steep cliffs and waterfalls. You can still see the remains of the settlement which was abandoned after the 1966 storm/floodwave which wiped out the place. The bridge has since been rebuilt and you can walk part of the East Coast trail on the other side of the gully. Extraordinary setting/scenery combined with historic drama.

Trail to the Suspension Bridge - worth it!
To find the trail head (coming from St. John's) go about a kilometer south of the park entrance and turn left at the sign for La Manche. Follow the gravel road and you will find parking and a sign to the trail head. The trail can be challenging once you get closer to the bridge/village. It had rained and the rocks were slippery, and some required almost hand and knee climbing, but that difficult part of the trail is very short. Once you get down to the bridge and abandoned village, the views are beautiful. Great view of the waterfalls as well. Well worth the hike in!

Trail décevante

Walking in Nature

We visited La Manche Provincial Park when spring had arrived. It was a cloudy, rainy day - perfect for a walk in nature. A wonderful place to find peace and solitude. Bring sturdy shoes and take care of the pathway as there are areas where slipping is possible. A must see park.

Beautiful Park and campground. Friendly Staff, lovely views and hikes surrounding the park. Can hike to the suspension bridge and beyond on the east coast trail. Lovely little hike to the waterfall and swimming hole from the campground as well.

Perfect swimming
Even if you want to go for just a day, it has an amazing hike and swimming hole! They could certainly use a little more signage for those unfamiliar in the park (those not staying on site).

Finding this Trail!
I read and read but there was no information as to where to pick up the trail head. Here goes...

1. From St. John's drive PAST the entrance to the La Manche provincial park. Continue just over a km and take the first left. You will drive in again, around a km along a gravel road and there you will see parking and clear signage.

2. Follow the clearly marked trail for about 20 minutes which will lead to the gorgeous bridge and bay. Look around for seals which sun in the area. A gem of a hike!

Being new to hiking this was great for us. We were driving the Irish loop and saw the sign. It was raining so not the best of days but we donned our waterproofs and headed off. Easy trail to follow, nothing to really see on the way but the trees kept us protected from the weather. When we got to the end stunning view of the bridge and the secluded cove. The bridge was fun to walk across, swayed a little but not much especially as my husband hates them. We did climb the steps to the other side for the view but didn't go any further due to the weather. Really enjoyed it, just an hour out of our day max and so worth it.
