We spent a very happy couple of hours at the castle exploring the exhibitions including the rather gruesome torture chambers! Lovely views over the historic town from the Tower. Fascinating architecture.

Locket Castle was built on a hill overlooking the river. In the late 12th century. Its strategic location made it important for the Defense of Bohemia. It is one of the oldest stone castles in the country. During the Hussite War of the 15th century, Protestant soldiers twice tried to storm the castle but failed because of its thick walls, giving it the nickname the Impregnable Castle of Bohemia. The only way King John of Luxembourg was able to conquer the castle was by tricking the guards into opening the gates for him by pretending to be on a social visit. The castle features a mix of architectural styles reflecting the very these periods of its construction, reconstruction and renovations. Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV grew up here. Be sure to visit the museum and the torture chamber.

A really great castle where you can go almost anywhere. From the cellar to the highest room in the tower. Lots of different ways to explore everywhere. A wonderful experience for young and old! And you're rewarded with a wonderful view!

Beautiful historical castle. It is some 900 years old, which makes it one of the oldest in the region and some 100-300 years older than most of the others!
Its true uniqueness is its age and its ownership. It is not owned by the state nor by some private company or individual. For some 400 years it has been owned by the town of Loket!
There a sort of historical museum in the castle. A little bit of everything. Few porcelain pieces, few weapons (mainly rusty ones), few torture devices, exhibition of gingerbread forms, stove tiles. A little bit of everything. Local vibe in its complexity, but nothing unique or exceptional, no big art, no big history. It is mainly naive and rural art (tile stoves, gingerbread). The castle is truthful to its ownership and does not try to play anything else. You have to not have higher expectations and like this local vibe to really enjoy it. Beautiful castle, but unique only in its age and ownership.
Big thumbs up for Loket town (a small town indead) for being able to maintain such a huge castle so well.

One thousand years later you can still feel how's like to be in impenetrable fortress. Gottstein statue and the dungeon dragon added some flavor to the castle even nowadays.

Интересное место. Можно приехать сюда на выходные и погрузиться в атмосферу средневековья. Есть где покушать блюда чешской кухни.

Costruito nel XIII secolo in stile romanico - gotico è una delle principali mete turistiche della Boemia occidentale. Può essere visitato tutto l'anno, in autonomia o con la guida. All'interno : affreschi medioevali, l'antica farmacia e un vero meteorite. Interessante la mostra permanente di ceramiche. Famosa la prigione con la camera delle torture. Great caste with small kids as well. Small castle but great organised. All small areas was greatly maintained. You see the great history.

Indiscutablement un château dont la visite réserve une satisfaction complète. Un site harmonieux, une histoire riche, une visite aux multiples détours et recoins (en ce compris des oubliettes et salles de torture avec un honorable et spectaculaire souci du détail), une profusion de pièces historiques diverses et bien commentées (armes, cibles peintes, meubles, statues anciennes, etc.) et en bonus une exposition significative sur la porcelaine locale ancienne et moderne. Ajoutons à cela des prix accessibles et une fiche explicative proposée également en français ou en anglais. On voudrait faire une remarque qu'on n'en trouverait pas.

Miriam,
I don't know really how much it would cost to take a taxi from Karlovy Vary to Loket since we drove there, but I have a couple of suggestions. First, you may want to consider renting a car for just one day which would likely be less expensive. That way, you could take your time and not feel rushed when visiting the town and castle since it's worth a day trip. Next, you could try getting a couple of quotes from taxi services on the internet from Karlovy to Loket. I've found this to be a more cost effective way to travel with taxis in Czech since those hailed on the street can be less than totally reputable and can be very expensive. I hope this may help you.
