Our family took this tour and we were so happy we did. The tour guides Leroy and Kristen were extremely knowledgeable, friendly and respectful of this unique river ecosystem. We saw so much of Costa Rica in the 3 hour tour that we could not have seen any other way. Educational and fun.

We went up two different rivers. The first was mangrove trees with there roots showing and looking like they could start walking any minute The second was as different as could be. Lots of birds to see and we even saw the elusive Ospry.

This tour was a very enjoyable way to end our Costa Rica vacation. Leroy was very knowledgeable and humorous. We saw over 24 varieties of birds in 2.5 hours, and learned about the mangrove ecosystem and the wildlife (mostly birds) there-in. Since the boat is small, the groups is small and the tour is very personable.

We had a fun trip from start to finish. Guides were friendly, well informed, and still excited about local wild life. We had an extra bonus monkey sighting but that is rare apparently. Well worth the money!

Guides are very well-informed and know all about all the bird (and animal! and fish!) species in this area. The tour starts where the river meets the ocean and goes inland. The binoculars were first-rate and we saw several large birds (herons, hawks, even an osprey) up close - and even some nests! It is beautiful river and worth a visit. The tour was well-organised and really fun.

We were hoping to see more animals on this safari but it is mostly a cruise for birders. If you love birds, you'll love this river cruise. If not, forget it. We saw one baby croc, and one larger one along the shore mostly submerged. We saw cows! Wow. But, no monkeys, which of course, we've seen most days when we walk anyway. 2 1/2 hours is way too long to sit on a hard, backless seat in a slow moving flat bottom boat. You don't really go that far on the river since the boat is so slow, so it was a disappointment for us. Sorry all you birders. I will add, however, Leroy and Kirsten are very gracious and informative hosts.

A river and salt water marsh slough adventure into the deepest darkest recesses of the Costa River river tropical jungle and bird wildlife sanctuary. One feels that hippos could charge out of the waters at any time, but instead it's big caymens and salt water crocs and their babies, magnificent indigenous local tropic and migratory birds from the far north wintering, iguanas sunning, monkeys. The number of bird species is the most I've ever seen in one locality. A protected for decades large wildlife santuary preserve and one of the largest protected special mangrove swamp groves in the Western hemisphere. Deep dark ancient mangroves blocking out the sun and creating their own special eco world.
Leroy and Kirstin are wonderful tour guide operator/owners with a new flat bottom deep comfortable safe boat. They have invested in a high tech quiet non polluted expensive electric outboard that adds to the covert sneak factor of the trip. They are expert at spotting the wildlife and their technical wildlife knowledge is outstanding. Multilingual also.
What to see what real ancient mangrove swamps looked like before the white man invasion and destructive land practices, this is the place. A deep quiet dark side slough brackish water channel leads one into the feeling of new adventure. You will not be disappointed.

Die River Safari war einer der schönsten und interessantesten, während unserer Rundreise durch Costa Rica. Die Bootstour erstreckt sich über die beiden Flüsse „Rio Nosara“ und „Rio Montaña“.
Der erste Teil der Flussfahrt wurde der Vogelbeobachtung gewidmet, der zweite Teil führte uns tief in den Mangrovenwald.
Die beiden Guides Kirsten und Leroy zeigten uns mit großer Leidenschaft die faszinierenden Naturschönheiten der Region. Leroy ein deutscher Biologe machte die Bootsfahrt mit seinem riesigen Wissen über Flora und Fauna zu einen besonderen Erlebnis. Dank dem geräuschlosen Elektroantrieb war eine Vogelbeobachtung wunderbar möglich. Wir waren begeistert von der Anzahl und Vielfalt an Vögel die wir zu sehen bekamen.
Kirsten hat ein wahres Adlerauge, sie hat die unsichtbarsten Tiere gefunden lange bevor wir noch wussten dass sie da waren und uns über deren Lebensarten aufgeklärt.
Danke für dieses wundervolle Erlebnis, wir würden es jederzeit wieder machen!

Wow! What a great experience. If you want to see the flora and fauna of Costa Rica up-close and personal, this is the way to do it! But, prepare to get up early...the boat leaves at 6:30 AM. There were six of us on the flat-bottomed boat. Four in my party and a couple from German. Leroy our guide, who is also German, narrated seamlessly between German and English. Kirsten, the other member of the crew, served as spotter and keen eyes she has! She spotted alligators long before we even knew they were there. The 2 hour-plus excursion is $38 (or 20,000 colones). Outside of the great food on this trip, this is the best-spent money of the vacation!

Kirsten and Leroy are great guides and their tour is very informative. They have great passion for the environment and all the creatures of their rivers. Great for families as well other nature lovers. Their boat only seats 8 people, but has an electric motor that doesn't disturb the wildlife.
