This is a must see place if you are in Baghdad. About a 2 hours drive from Baghdad.
The key spots I wanted to see were - (whatever is left of ) Tower of Babel, Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Lion of Babylon, death place of Alexander the great ....
Let me add some details on how to get to this place from Baghdad.
1. Take a cab from the hotel to Allawi Southern (Garage) to get intercity transport to south Iraq.
2. I got a private taxi. Driver Ali +964 782 983 6331 There are other options available from there - like shared taxi. But, I would recommend a private taxi, if you are not good at Arabic and your budget allows. That way you are assured of a way to get back to Baghdad
3. Look up the place on Google maps. Your driver may not know the exact location of the ancient city. Google Map will take you there.
4. Get a guide from Babylon. You will see them at the gate. My guide was Makki. Excellent gentleman. Speaks english. You can reach him at +964 771 277 9677 at set things up ahead of time.
It will be a good idea to leave early in the morning from Baghdad. The drive is about 2 hours. I reached there around noon and the temp was 49 degrees. But it was all worth it.

Самая известная и значительная достопримечательность современного Ирака. Именно здесь правил Хамураппи в 18в до н.э., создавший свод законов, о котором стало известно при раскопках; здесь была построена легендарная Вавилонская башня; созданы висячие сады Семирамиды (одно из чудес света Древнего мира) в правление Навуходоносора 2 (605-562 гг до н.э.).
Сейчас раскопан Вавилон времени Навуходоносора, да и то процентов на 10...
А ведь на 10м ниже находится еще более древний Вавилон времени Хамураппи, но раскопать его будет довольно трудно, так как 8м ниже археологи наткнулись на слой воды в 2м...

This is a nice archeological site, however, most of the part is refurbished and it's not really ancient. It's more like a new site, which loses its value.
The tickets to this site for foreigner is 25000 dinar. they said hiring a guide is needed but I doubt it's truth. You can visit Saddam Hussein Palace from here, which is a lot more impressive.

You definitely have to visit this place. Is BABYLON for god sake!!! Nicely reconstructed you can feel the vibes. Definitely one of the highlights of IRAQ !

this is a must-see historical place from the very old history of Iraq, unfortunately, the original Ishtar Gate is taken and placed in the Museum of Berlin. not all the historical buildings are discovered, and unfortunately there is no chance to see the Garden of Babylone which was one of the Seven World Wonders.

Although the reconstruction is not the best, there is no denying the historical significance of this site. Go in the later afternoon to avoid the heat. Friendly guides. Allow about an hour. From there you can walk to "Saddam's Palace"--one of his former homes which has been vandalized and has quite a bit of graffiti. The same guides can let you in. From there there is a great of Babylon that Saddam and his family had from their terrace.

Never expected this place to be relatively well maintained considering other infrastructure of Iraq.Though managing plastic waste would have been better.
The Ruins have been restored in modern way which takes away nostalgia of visiting such a place .However ,there is some excavated area which is preserved and provides window to see through the history.i would advise to get guide so that facts about this place is well presented which otherwise may seem another ruin among the modern ruins created by war

On the road from Najaf to Hilla, we could stop and enjoy the whole site of us only. The renovation made by Saddam can be debatable but the place worth the visit with a guide. Would recommend the visit to anyone who like to explore one of the famous civilization nest

We went here today to visit the sight and we were overwhelmed by the history of the site. I don't know many ruins so spectacle that you can visit without a single other tourist. Makyy is a wonderful and knowledgeable guide and super friendly. After, he even arranged a private tour of Saddam's ransacked palace at Babylon. The security situation appears to have improved significantly and we did a day trip form Baghdad with a private driver arranged through friends of friends. A fascinating visit, well persevered, though for true history buffs, yes significant parts were rebuilt by Saddam, but there is enough there of the old to interest everyone and it was a real privilege to visit. I would recommend it to anyone!

Hi, I am going on a ziyarat (pilgrimage)
of religious sites in Iraq in December. I will be going to Karbala but would love to spend a few hours/day going to see Babylon. As a female going with a few family members- is it safe to do so? Can anyone recommend a tour guide or how I could do this without one. Would half a day be enough to see the main site? Really hoping someone can help.

Hi Naheedch,
I went to Babylon on a day trip from Baghdad during Ramadan this year. A few hours should be enough for the site. We spent maybe 3 in total including a tour of Saddam's ransacked palace that overlooks the site.
We found a guide at the site with a little bit broken english but a decent knowledge of the site. He was great and couldn't have been more helpful. Otherwise, we had the place entirely to ourselves. It was a really remarkable day and well worth it.
Safety wise, I'm a white irish woman and travelled with two male friends. We had no issues and even though I opted to wear a hijab to be respectful, the guys at Babylon themselves kept encouraging me to take it off and not to worry about wearing it! I didn't mind either way.
In summary I would say it was easily one of the best things I've done. It feels really special to have what was effectively a private tour of the site (it may have been quieter for Ramadan?). Message me if you need any more details. All the best.
