One of the must-visit places. Hat's off to our army for their service in that difficult location and weather, and thanks for keeping us safe. Breathtaking journey and beautiful nature. Bhutan, India and China could be seen from observation deck.

Very difficult terrain, but our travel agent was superb! he took us there with approvals of Army checkpost, and we saw India China border and it was really an India Passion and Country Pride moment and being there was morally supportive of our Great Indian Army who are taking so difficult task to maintain borders!

This was a very memorable trip, the road to Nathula pass from Gangtok is so well maintained by BRO ( Border Road Organisation ).Its a very beautiful and scenic experience which is not to be missed. Make sure you visit this place, it's closed on some days of the week, so plan well with your tour agent . we traveled with Ease Tours and Treks and Mr. Bikash organised the permits for us well in advance.

Nathula pass is a road connecting India and China's Tibet. It is similar to Wagah border between India and Pakistan with a lot less fanfare. It's such an experience at that height (15000 ft) and bone chilling cold around us almost all through the year. Due to the height, the oxygen level is less over there, so we need to be slowly moving around without making any quick moves like running or dancing. No need to worry, but just a caution.
For me it was a goosebumps moment to see the Chinese buildings right across the border with Chinese letters on it. On India's side, this place is a tourist spot whereas it's an abandoned place on the Chinese side. Indian Army stay alert on this border too like always and they help the tourists in many ways possible including providing snacks and warm clothes.
Tourists need to get a permit for the visit and hence it is better to engage local agents who will assist you in everything and make this trip a memorable one. One need to provide an ID proof, name and address proof to get this permit from Police and the Army camp.
Best time to visit is Sep-Nov, as it start snowing Dec onwards and this will be closed for tourists. It's a must watch place while in East Sikkim.

Absolutely divine! Cannot begin to describe how much I loved this place.
Felt such immense respect and love for our country and our army.
If you start off by 0800 hrs. in the morning, the drive to Nathu La might take anything between 2-3 hours. The weather can change up there (in the pass) pretty quickly, so I recommend that people visit the pass first thing, and then Baba Harbhajan ji ka Mandir. We did it the other way around because we initially couldn't find a vehicle that wasn't stuffed to its brim, but it was still okay seeing it in that order. Make sure your visit to the pass concludes by 1400 hrs.
Another important thing - the drive up to 12,000 ft. is manageable for most people, but make sure you're fully capable of going up to the pass ie at 14,140 ft. ASL.
Recognisable symptoms of decreasing oxygen are mild breathlessness or a slight headache. Do not take any risks if you feel you aren't comfortable, especially if you're over 40.
The vehicles which are allowed to go up to the pass from 12-13k ft are pretty big, but the tour organisers will stuff in as many people as possible. Do not, at any cost, sit in the back seat. Claustrophobia will creep in even for those who don't have it.
Make sure you sit in the middle/front seat. 2 people in a row at max.
One of the young ladies who sat in the back seat of the vehicle complained of great uneasiness and didn't even get down to see the pass. We later heard that she had to be administered oxygen in a hospital nearby.
Again, you will have to climb a flight of 30 - 40 stairs to go up to the actual int'l boundary separating India and China, and that climb too is well, heavy. Climb slowly and take as much time as you want. It gets real cold here. About -2 C.
Make sure you rent some good and thick jackets and gloves to wear. You'll find them midway as you start from your hotel to 12k feet, where the shops and cafes are. Shop 49's good.
Get yourself a certificate (about 50 INR) congratulating your visit to the Pass.
To see the tricolour and the smiling soldiers guarding what it stands for, in conditions as difficult (and much more, in fact) makes us realise that the freedom we enjoy and cherish so dearly comes at a great cost - to gain it and to keep it. If you come across a jawan or a soldier there, make sure you tell them how much they mean to you. It will make their day.

It's one of the must visit places when visiting East Sikkim. But one should be prepared well in advance to do this journey from physical side as well as from documentation side.
As this place is more than 14000 ft, there will be a lack of oxygen which may lead to breathing problem, headache etc. So carrying a small "Oxygen Can/ Cylinder" may be a cautious thing. Also there are lots of steps to reach to the top and these steps are not ordinary building steps. These are high steps and one should be very relax when climbing the steps. Weather is freezing out there, considering which proper warm clothes are must.
Apart from the physical precautions, there are lots of documentary procedure one has to follow like arranging permits to get entry at the Nathula Pass being in the military zone( India-China Border).
We have requested our Hotel to arrange our visit to Nathula Pass and they have arranged everything with local tour operator. But they had to be informed one day advance before our tour by giving photos along with xerox of Voter ID.
Road to Nathula Pass is very scenic. After reaching to the top it's an amazing view witnessing snow capped mountains with foggy weather and Indian Army is protecting our border in this freezing cold. Chinese Flag along with their building structure/Gates can be seen from few feet distance. Taking pictures are prohibited at the top.
Just before climbing the steps, there is a small Hut and here anyone can take some rest. One may avail tea/coffee or momo etc. and there is an arrangement of heaters also.
One should not miss this kind of experience when at East Sikkim.

Nice place at a high altitude bordering China.Get to know how our army men work in extreme temperatures and adverse conditions to protect the rest of the countrymen.
Best to keep calm and not rush or exert once you are there or else you will be gasping for breath coz of low oxygen...specially when one has to climb the steps.
Amazing views on the way.
No photography allowed.Only at the base point you are allowed to take pictures.
