This hill is a popular hiking trail for the locals around this area. There are several trails so be sure of your way. There is a rest stop at the top.

My better half and I together with our friends hiked up Bukit Hijau this afternoon. The starting point of the trail is at the end of Cangkat Tembaga. From the main road, Jalan Masjid Negeri, turn left into Jalan Tembaga and drive till the end of the road. You will see a signboard of a Chinese temple, turn left into a side road and then turn right into Cangkat Tembaga. You can park your car there. You will see a flight of concrete stairs and that is the trail head. Please refer to the photos attached.
The trail up Bukit Hijau is very clear and clean. It consists of concrete steps and jungle trails. The locals have put up white round signs with numbers on the trees, starting from No.1 to No.19. Just follow the number signs and you will come to an open space at No.18. There is a shed which serves as a resting place. Walk a little distance ahead and you will come to No.19 and there is another shed there. There were a number of hikers relaxing, chit-chatting and enjoying their tea and snacks there when we reached the place.
It is a short trail and will take about 30 minutes to reach the peak (No.19) at a leisure pace. There is a badminton court just after the starting point. You will see two fish ponds as well as a toilet with water after No.3, beside a zinc shed. Along the trail there are several small shrines.
The viewpoints are near the two resting sheds. Stand on the big boulders to enjoy the panoramic view of the surrounding lush green jungle, the city area below and the blue sea from afar. The Penang Bridge as well as the hills on the mainland side are also clearly visible. It would be a good place to watch the sunrise as it faces the east.
It is a good and easy trail for beginner hikers and those wishing to get some exercise and enjoy the beautiful view at the top.

i decided to go to the trail after hearing about it in trip adviser and because i was settled in home-stay near the trail , so i went there walking . it is located in the middle of the island in a district called jelutong .you should find a street called jalan tembaga opposite the hospital of Lam Wah Ee.at the end of the street you turn left in a lane then to the right then left to find the stairs which is the start of the trail. i was not sure because the start of the trail is just in the middle of the city houses..it is a short very easy trail which i crossed it in half an hour .you will find during your way up a volleyball field , some monks kiosks for meditation , some man made colored fish small ponds and some numbers on the trees ,keep with the numbers to reach the end of the trail.at the end there is a good view which deserves the sweating.
i do not recommend one goes alone because you are right in the heart of the city but seems like you are in the middle of nowhere .the trail was so lonely.all in all you will get some good views and sweat for one hour exercise

Located at the back of the neighbourhood of Jalan Tembaga, the walking trail is not too difficult for family and friends outing. Average walking time to the top is about 35 min. The path is mostly steps made of bricks and broken stones therefore a good pair of covered walking shoes will be ideal. The path is rather shaded so its quite a pleasant walk up. There seem to be no public toilets on the way up so it is advisable to be prepared prior the walk.

There are about 3 viewing points but 2 provide a good panoramic view of Penang. One is looking towards Ayer Itam towns where one gets to see Penang's Kek Lok Si Temple Complex from far with townships at the bottom (i.e. Ayer Itam town, Paya Terubong and Farlim). The other viewing point is actually a big rock and you can get to stand on the rock and view the city of George Town and Bukit Mertajam from far. One will be mesmerised by the aerial view of George Town. You can sit on the rock and look at sunrise. Not recommend to let children to be there alone. Need to be accompanied by adults as there is no safety grills and fencing around the rock.

Overall, it is a good walking trail with low difficulty in my opinion.

Not many are aware of Bukit Hijau (Green Hill). Not even Penangites. However, for hiking lovers, among them, sometimes the name Bukit Hijau is mentioned. It is less known, as compared to Penang Hill or Bukit Jambul. But Bukit Hijau exists and for those who enjoy a quiet, almost no-crowd hiking, of around 20 minutes, if you are an average hiker, or perhaps slightly longer if you walk slower, go for Bukit Hijau.

Bukit Hijau can also be known as the viewpoints for Penang's Farlim as well as Penang Bridge. There are two sides of the peak where one can see the vast layout of the houses around this hill.

Finding it may be a bit tricky. In Greenlane, locate Jalan Tembaga (Tembaga Road). Go into that lane and go right to the end, where there is a temple. On its left, there is a small lane. Go into that lane and walk to the back lane of the houses there. You are at the foot of the hill. Go to the furthest right and there are steps, to walk up the hill. You will be greeted by the site of a badminton court, made by the people who stay there. Continue to walk up and you should see another staircase that leads to two small man-made pools (with fish). Journey on and you should be able to reach the peak within another 10 to 15 minutes. The path is marked by numbers.. Watch out for them.

At the peak, there are boulders. Climb on them carefully, and you will have a spectacular view of Penang. And this is totally free. No charges. No crowd.
