Visiting The Ruins of the Szent Egyed Abbey in Hungary was a visually captivating experience, though it did come with some challenges. We started by exploring the museum, which unfortunately is entirely in Hungarian. There’s no 4G/5G connectivity or Wi-Fi available, making it difficult to translate the information on the spot. However, the museum does offer some souvenirs and drinks for purchase.
The ruins themselves, located 500-1000 meters up the road, were stunning and interesting to explore. Again, all the information was in Hungarian, but using ChatGPT, we managed to translate and follow along with what we were seeing. Parking was a bit unconventional, as it was in the grass within a residential area.
The observation tower was unfortunately under maintenance during our visit, which was a slight disappointment. The site does have restrooms, but they lacked locks on the doors and were out of toilet paper, which was not ideal.

The museum is located before the entrance to the village on the right. You will find an exhibition of items found through the excavations carried out in the abbey. Book in English on loan. Then we will have to take the car, go to the village to visit the ruins themselves. Almost all that remains is the foundations. At the entrance, a sheet explaining the different areas. Namely, it was a congregation in St Gilles, France.

Érdemes ellátogatni minden magyarnak legalább egyszer, hogy Szent László királyunkról többet megtudjon. 340 lépcsőjével tartalmas túra, illetve a tanösvény felejthetetlen. (a tanösvény válaszauhoz hűtőmágnes kell!)

If you're a bit interested in European history and / or architecture, then this is your place. (If the Forum Romanum is only old stones for you: stay away)
This is the ruins of a monastery found in 1092 and excavated in 1980. An impressive museum, small in size but great in content, welcomes you and briefs you up.
Then the ruin-site starts talking to you, as you have the background. Sadly the museum is mainly in Hungarian, but they have international guide books.

Remélem fellendíti az idegenforgalmat itt elköltött befektetés. Ehhez azonban fontos nem csak a kezdeti erőfeszítés, hanem a fenntartásra fordított figyelem is. Nem működött a kilátó, az interaktív kiállítás tablettel, a kártyaelfogadó terminál. Nem beszélve a hely népszerűsítésére fordított erőről, amit jellemez a tripadvisor lévő értékelések száma, valamint az hogy egy angol turista vitte fel az emlékhelyet és így abbey-ként szerepel. A hely mindenképpen több figyelmet érdemel és ha a környéken járunk mindenképpen keressük fel.

A somogyvári székesegyház romjai némi rálátást adnak az ország valaha volt nagyságára. A templom a maga idejében Európa legnagyobbjai közé tartozott. Még elhordva-lebontva is monumentális.... Kevesen tudják, valaha kőbányaként használták egy mesterséges Balaton-csatorna segítségével. Még a szigligeti vár is ennek köveiből épült....
Az új látogatóközpont is sok tudnivalót közvetít, érdemes meglátogatni!

A Somogyvári apátsági rom egy festői rom, a kilátójából ellátni a Balatonig, de jól kivehető az egykori apátság felépítése is. nyári időszakban virágok szegélyezik a területen az utakat. Amikor ott jártunk a virágok környéke tele volt szebbnél-szebb pillangókkal.
A közelmúltban megnyitott látogatóközpont modern, de nagyon igényes módon mutatja be az apátság történetét és végre méltó elhelyezést biztosít a megtalált kőtöredéke számára.
A látogatóközpont és a romkert egy belépővel látogatható a kettő között sétaút vezet, mindkettőnél van parkolási lehetőség is.
A közelmúltban megnyitott látogatóközpont modern, de nagyon igényes módon mutatja be az apátság történetét és végre méltó elhelyezést biztosít a megtalált kőtöredéke számára.

Gyakran elhajtunk mellette, így meglepődve tapasztaltuk, milyen szépen feltárták a régi templomot, kolostort. A kilátó először túlzásnak tűnt, a látvány fentről viszont ellensúlyozta a kezdeti ellenérzéseket.

It is an amasing place.
Lately a museum was opened nearby and the entrance fee allows to get in both places. It is rather expensive (~1600 HUF) but totally worth the price for an over 900 years old remains, a museum and a high - standare included.
Defenately a good deal.

The lake is stunning and a trip across the water to the Abbey a must! Balaton is friendly, clean and reasonably priced. Not one piece of litter anywhere! Food excellent with family friendly atmosphere in restaurants and cafe's. will return dispite the distance. Budapest airport was long drive away. but worth every mile
