Rua Central is a narrow winding street on the Macau Peninsulas. It starts at St. Lawrence's Church and runs northeast until reaching Ave. de Almeida Ribeiro. Although important streets were here for much longer, Rua Central was officially built in 1848 in what was the centre of the Macau at that time, hence the street name.
The Portuguese built some of Macau's earliest European style buildings, monasteries and church buildings along Rua Central. These include World Heritage attractions such as St. Lawrence's Church, St. Joseph's Monastery & Seminary, St. Augustine's Church and Dom Pedro V, the earliest western style theatre house in Asia.
Rua Central was a transportation hub and would have been bustling with activity during the 19th-century. However, the city needed to expand and that had to happen to the northeast of here. After Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro was built in the early 20th-century to accommodate the cities growth and expansion, Rua Central began a steady and long decline in usage and importance to the city.
Today, the street is rather quiet, lined with residential buildings, occasional cafe and coffee shop. There is access to the World Heritage attractions mentioned above. Otherwise, it is a mostly forgotten location in Macau and rarely visited by tourists. To that end, history buffs may find this street interesting, others will likely want to concentrate their limited sightseeing time in Macau elsewhere.
