Impressive European inspired building
This building is a palace/museum that used to be the residence of the Maharaja of Gwalior. Apparently the descendants of the last Maharaja still live in the palace and that part is not open to the public. The palace is a nice example of Classicism and pavilions on the roof terraces of a mix of Indo-Islamic and Victorian styles. The interiors are an eclectic mix of European and Victorian styles, especially the silver train in the banquet room, drawing rooms and chandeliers. A beautiful building to visit. Although if you don't intend to visit the museum, you can just view the palace from the outside as well.

Beautiful architecture
The Palace is still lived in. The occupants are in a separate part of the house which is a very ornate building made from a mix of French English and Italian architecture.
The Palace houses a large museum covering transport and textiles and there are incredible examples of glass chandeliers in the stairways and some rooms.
One room is set out to illustrate the dinning layout of a western military dinner complete with train to transport the port and cigars around the table. It is a contrast to the Indian room.
On entry to the Palace we had to pay an additional fee for each camera or leave them in a lock box. It seems crazy as phones are allowed in for no charge!!

This is quite a place with a lot to see. 800 rupees entrance for foreigners so a little on the pricey side. Enjoyed seeing this as it was for us unexpected.

Tempting unless you are in
The outside architecture is fascinating and it was interesting to have a look into the life of ther former high class
We are not surer that during the time of the original inhabitants the same low level of cleanness could have been experienced

The entry fee is exorbitant 200₹ per person. The collection is good though. Main thing is Darbar hall and the chandeliers in durbar hall.

Why revolutions happen
If you want a good glimpse into the excess of power and wealth of the Scindia dynasty - this is a good place to start. But then trace how their fawning alliance with the British led to Rani of Jhansi's death in the 1857 rebellion - trace this to the current Scindia royals in parliament - having shifted with the winds all the way, so that now one represents the BJP party. No wonder their coat of arms involves two cobras!

Royal history of scindia's palace.
2018年12月 • 家庭
It was the Maharaja's wish to bring the Palace of Versailles to Gwalior. So, when the occasion arose for King Edward's arrival in the year 1875, he built the Jai Vilas Palace by putting prisoners from the Gwalior fort to work on its construction. Workers spent 12 years fabricating the plush carpet in the main attraction of the Palace - the Durbar Hall. The carpet is one of the largest in the world.

The layout of the Jai Vilas Palace is reflective of the colonial period portraying the strong British influence on India. Designed by the well-known architect Sir Michael Filose (Mukhel Sahib), the magnificent palace is a prime example of European architecture, bringing together myriad experiences the great Sardar had on his tour of the West. The first floor is fashioned in Tuscan style, while the second and third floors are inspired from the Italian-Doric and Corinthian methods respectively. All 400 rooms are furnished with Italian marble flooring, Persian carpets, ornamental accessories and rare antiquities from France, China and Italy.
