This monument is visible all around as you walk on the moorland plateau above the River Calder. Pleasant location for walking and great views all around, even more mistic in the case when the valley is in mist.

After struggling for 1 hour or so my Wife and I reached the summit!!!
Was told there was a cafe and shop there also toilets??? Which was not true 🤔 views was good could see McDonald's in Halifax!! Next time we will drive up x

Excellent walk up to the top with a path leading all the way up,some bits were a little steep but there were plenty of places to sit and rest on some of the larger stones. We decided to come back down a slightly different way which was very steep and a little tricky,I would definitely stay on the paths even if the other way looks quicker

As a land mark thats important to calderdale, the view from its balcony is without doubt one of the best in this area. You can see for miles on a clear day making the hike up there all the more worth it. If you have a few hours to kill take a look see....you won't be disappointed.

We followed a fairly easy path from the canal side in Hebden Bridge to Stoodley Pike but found it a bit tricky to find our way through the woods at the bottom of the walk. The views from the top are great. We did not climb up the tower itself as it is completely dark and quite steep.
Back along the Pennine Way and along the canal for a round trip of 10 miles or so.

I love this place. You can see it from all over Calderdale so it makes a good target especially when walking with kids. There are lots of different ways of getting to it - some more difficult than others. When we used to have a dog we would go from right down the bottom of Hebden so our dog could have a good off lead run before we hit the moors where there are sometimes sheep. The challenge for the kids is whether they can do the Stoodley staircase without using the torch on our phone. They always did it and came out at the top feeling brave and triumphant.

Walking the Pennine Way, Stoodley Pike was our friend on the horizon for 2 days and our picnic spot on the first of those. It is beautifully set with lovely views. The moor behind it is worth crossing - big and flat and boggy, everything you want from the Pennine moors but with stone paths to make it easily passable if you stick to the Pennine Way. Do be brave, switch on your phone torch and walk up the dark stairwell to enjoy the even better view from the balcony. So why not 5 stars? Because the tower itself is not that special, it's the landscape around it that is the star and I can imagine that just walking up from the car park and back might be a bit of a trudge if you imagine the tower itself is going to make itself worth it. You need to explore a bit further afield and look at the Pike from the distance in my view.

Stoodley Pike is such an iconic image of Todmorden that one really must go and visit if you are in the area. Several routes up (easy and more difficult) with plenty of people to point the best way for you.
It is a good walk and challenging if the weather turns but certainly worth the view once there.
People say take a torch to climb up onto the balcony but part of the fun is to feel your way up and down.
In the old days you could go down as well with the disturbing sound of bones cracking underfoot- presumably from lost sheep. This , however, is now closed off so up is the only direction of travel once you arrive.
Take refreshments with you as there is nothing on the top but moorlands.

Stoodley Pike built to celebrate victory over the French at the Battle of Waterloo is a well known sight for visitors to Hebden Bridge and Todmorden. There are a number of routes to the 'Pike' all relatively easy going. For the more fit amongst us, local fell runs are held annually and many use the route for training. People are inspired to walk to the summit and take in the views across the valley and moors. If its a walk you want with an easy challenge then do it.

What does this Monument signify. As a young person living in Todmorden in the thirties and fourties I was told it had something to do with the Crimea War. Is this so?

The answers are to be found via a Google search - it's quite interesting and worth the walk to get there and climb the tower.

There is a free car park at Withins Clough reservoir which we normally use. It's about a half to theee quarters of an hour uphill walk across the moor from there. I think that's about the nearest place to park.
