È probabile che la struttura venisse utilizzata come sede delle riunioni degli Augustali perché su alcuni frammenti su una parete erano incisi i nomi di alcuni degli appartenenti alla categoria
La struttura venne restaurata e ampliata a seguito del terremoto di Pompei del 62 ma venne poi sepolta sotto una coltre di fango a seguito delle colate piroclastiche provocate dall'eruzione del Vesuvio del 79. Rimase sconosciuto fino al 1740

Edificio religioso del I secolo a.C. in cui si riunivano i sacerdoto augustali; qui, oltre ad alcune pareti affrescate, anche in vividi colori, si apprezza la struttura diversa da quella delle abitazioni.

Huset tjente som bolig for Augustalerne, der stod for kejserkulten. I huset findes marmorgulve og fresker i ganske velbevaret stand. I et lille kammer fandt man under udgravningen et lig der lå i sin seng.

Io sono rimasto incantato nel poter entrare in un edificio del primo secolo così ben conservato. Vivendo vicino Roma la visito spesso, ma non esistono edifici del primo secolo così conservati! Perciò si prova un emozione particolare a vedere dal vivo e non in una ricostruzione virtuale un edificio come questo. Spero che proverete le mie stesse emozioni. Buona visita a voi popolo di TripAdvisor.

The Sacerdotes Augustales ("Priests of Augustus") were a priestly college established by the emperor Tiberius in 14 AD. to maintain the cult of the recently deceased emperor Augustus and his family, the Gens Iulia. They were present in the Roman world in every city of some importance, and even in smaller cities, such as Herculaneum.
The panel affixed to the premises explains that the Augustales effectively became an intermediate institution, open to the co-optation of members of plebeian origin (in the case of Herculaneum, "liberti", i.e. freed slaves): in short, a sort of "social elevator".
None of the sites of Augustales among those found can even remotely boast the state of conservation of this one in Herculaneum. Place intended for college meetings, it obviously has a different structure from that of the dwellings: it looks like a quadrangular building, divided into three small naves by two pairs of mighty columns. What is considered the caretaker's bedroom is annexed. The frescoes on the walls of the central "sacellum", in the so-called "fourth style", and the polychrome marble floors are particularly well preserved; just as the main and minor beams of the architraves and ceilings are preserved (although charred).
The conservation of wood is a characteristic of Herculaneum compared to Pompeii, and it occurred because Herculaneum was covered by a layer (which is enormous, 20 meters high) not of "dry" lapilli and ashes, as in Pompeii, but saturated with water, which due to the lack of oxygen it did not allow the wood to burn.
So this building commands attention among the wonders of Herculaneum.

On ne peut qu'arrêter son souffle devant toutes ces merveilles d'Herculaneum.Site très bien conservé et la mise à jour par les archéologues de cette ville est remarquable de génies.

Er wordt veronderstelt dat dit het centrum was voor de cultus van Keizer Augustus, ook acht men het mogelijk dat dit de plaatselijke curie was (raadhuis).
De muren hebben blinde bogen, in het midden staan er 4 zuilen. Recht voor de ingang is een later een kamer gecreëerd, door twee wanden bij te plaatsen die de achterwand met de laatste zuilen verbindt. Deze ruimte diende dan als heiligdom.
Hier vindt men een mooie fresco aan je linker kant van Hercules met Juno en Minerva.
Aan je rechterkant van Hercules die de strijdt voert tegen de Etruskische god Achelous.
Een inscriptie, nu op de muur geplaatst, is gewijd aan Keizer Augustus, terwijl hij nog leefde.

The wall ornamentation in this "college" (which was not a school but more like a union/club/organization for freedmen) is amazingly intact. You can even see some of the wooden beams in this building, which shockingly did not burn up in the volcanic eruption that completely eviscerated Pompeii.
