I love this. Over 30 years ago I could walk up Glen. But the tram takes me back to childhood! So simple. Such lovely crew and volunteers. Just makes it more special to now ride up!

Great little tramway. Volunteer operated so limited running times so check before you visit. If you wish you can travel up and walk down.

Haven't written a review on here for donkeys years but felt obliged to do so after visiting today. The volunteers were all so friendly and made my little boy feel like part of the team. They all took time out to get to know him and explain how everything worked which he just loved.
We bought a day rider so went up and down six times and it only cost £2.50 (little one was free as he's only four, but even after his next birthday I think it's only £1 for him). Apparently some visitors spend all afternoon just going back and forth which is quite understandable!
Go and have a ride, it's fun, it's part of local history, run by volunteers, and I would assume they rely on ticket sales to keep things ticking over. It'd be incredibly sad if they had to close it down after 120+ years.
My lad hasn't stopped talking about it and wants to go back next weekend so I think we'll be regular visitors going forward.
I don't normally like to bother with cash but took a tenner out especially before we went, however was surprised (and pleased) to find it's card payments only at the moment, so you'll need to take a card. It's contactless though for anyone concerned about getting nasty germs from grubby old chip and pin.

We visited the Tramway in July 2021 whilst staying in Saltaire village and it was an ideal way to the top of the hill! It is run by volunteers and for a small fare you can travel all day, should you wish. The tramway was built in 1895 and is a rare cable operated tramway. At the top there’s a pub called The Old Glen House a few minutes walk away as well as longer walks around the Glen. The staff were all friendly and chatty and the journey on the tram was also pleasant, albeit short.
This was a cheap and quirky attraction that was enjoyable. The only thing I would have said was that if they had an information board at the top station saying what you can do in the area, that would be really good, for people who aren’t local.

A friend who organizes interesting visits whilst I am staying with him had chosen to surprise me with a visit to the Shipley Glen Tramway. I had no idea of what to expect and first impressions didn't really provide any idea of what was beyond the entrance.
We boarded at the top station. I knew the tramway had been rescued by a group of dedicated volunteers and has since been granted a long lease to keep running along it's original route.
The tramway was built to take visitors to and from a popular fairground offering what was in it's day a sort of theme park with various activities including a toboggan run. The two restored tramcars carry about 8-10 passengers at a time and are propelled by a cable that pulls one car up, and the other down each on their own track.
At the top there is a boarding station and at the bottom the main ticket office and a small shop and museum, rudimentary but adequate toilets are also provided at the main station. Outside the museum there is an original passenger vehicle with a slightly different design similar to a funicular which suggests the lines inclination was more severe than it is today.
Prices are very reasonable at GBP2.50 All Day Rover fare for adults, concessions at GBP1.50, Children 5-16 GBP1.00 Children Under 5 Free. Other fare options available (see Shipley Glen Website). The ride takes about 5 minutes through some very pretty woodland and the journey itself is very interesting, while at times it might seem a bit rickety be assured that the tramway has been updated with improved braking and meets all current safety requirements. There is the ability to transport a pushchair in an area at the rear of each car.
During operation the trams run regularly and it is a great experience little changed from what our Victorian ancestors would have enjoyed. Sadly nothing remains of the once hugely popular fairground but the museum gives visitors a glimpse of it was once like.
Not far from Bingley/ Saltaire it is well worth the journey, street parking is available at the top station, and a car park at the main station. Just Google "Shipley Glen Tramway" and click on their website link for details.
Sadly along with most heritage attractions operation has been suspended during the Corona Virus crisis. Watch their website for re-opening when they hope to celebrate the tramways 125th anniversary.
Great Fun for adults and kids alike.

Lovely little tramway up the hill. The volunteers are great, and the tramway itself a delight. Our toddler couldn’t get enough of it. Well worth the £2.50 return fare.

What is there to do at the top? Will I be able to take a pram?

You would have to take the child out of the pram whilst on the ride. You could leave the pram at the base station or fold it and take it with you. At the top you can buy sweets in their little shop, visit the pub for lunch, go to a small museum Bracken Hall Countryside Centre which has simple activities for children, go for walks, or walk back down a path to the base station. Near the bottom is the excellent Roberts Park and of course Saltaire.
Is it possible to walk along by the canal to the tramway?

I feel silly asking this question but I live in Bradford - 1 mile from frizinghall so I guess I would get on to this tram from saltaire as that's closer to me than the baildon one. Can anyone tell me exactly where i would need to go for this tram? I.e. Nearby landmarks ? If you can upload a picture to this app of where I would need to get on that would be really helpful
