Wonderful day exploring the Tapajos National Forest, visiting Belterra-one of the towns built by Henry Ford to supply rubber for automobile production in the 1920s, and having a lunch of local favorites followed by a dip in the old swimming hole. Pierre is friendly, professional and passionate about sharing his beautiful country with you. Can highly recommend this tour for those of you visiting the area from off the cruise ships.

We made on-line inquiries about possible itineraries for the the time our Cruise ship was to be in port in Santarem. Karim responded promptly with a suggestion which we were happy to settle on. Unfortunately, the morning of our scheduled arrival, our ship announced it was going to be 2 hours late arriving at the port. After some frantic emailing back and forth, our guide for the day, Pierre Schwarz, was able to get permission for our group to take a trek in the Tapajos National Forest instead of the much further away private rain forest in the original plan. We cannot say enough about Pierre's efforts to get us into the jungle. He was friendly, knowledgable and entertaining. He was even able to squeeze in a quick visit to see the "meeting of the waters" before getting us back to the ship. His email is pierre.schwarz@protonmail.com

I organised this tour for myself and a group of friends and we had the best time!
Pierre was an absolute delight as tour guide and looked after us very well even though we had a tight schedule.
The rainforest was amazing to walk through and the swimming hole was just magical, I'll be returning for sure !
Highly recommended !

I originally contacted Big Tree in early March, 2018. It took more than a week, but I eventually heard back from Karim, who said he was available in late May to guide us on a full-day outing in Santarem. Later, when I had an additional question, he was very hard to reach, but he eventually confirmed our booking. We then had a problem with our boat from Santarem to Belem, but he proposed a solution (a shorter tour), which we accepted. Shortly before we departed on the boat from Manaus to Santarem, I spoke to him over the phone, and he assured me everything would work out and that he would help me rebook our hotel in Santarem. But then he dropped off the radar screen. He did not respond to my multiple texts, and he failed to show up in Santarem. He simply abandoned us, with no explanation or apology. I understand that maybe the shorter tour might not have worked very well. But he should have communicated something to us. From our experience, he is not reliable and should be avoided.

As a student researching the area and Fordlândia I quickly came across Big Tree Adventure Tours and Karim's details, and what can I say. He's a friendly, responsive, informative and very interesting guy, and a great guide and asset to Big Tree. Not only was he in the loop with everything going on in Santarém but his knowledge and passion for the local culture, cuisine, history and care for the future of the area is inspiring. I visited the sawmill first and then did a tour of Rick's forest just beside the Tapajos National Park with Karim and Rick himself. I don't usually use the word mind-blowing often, but the hike into the rainforest with accompaniment from Raimundo and his son was a surreal and unforgettable experience. The trees and rainforest itself were incredible, the wildlife noisy, and the watering hole complete with swing rope the perfect way to relax after a long hike. I travelled around Brazil for over a month, and on my third visit there, but this sticks out as one of the best experiences I've ever had not just in Brazil but travelling anywhere! I cannot recommend enough!

Part of the four who had another local guide (Gil) cancel on us an hour before our meeting time and send Karim as a sub. Turned out great! We had booked a private tour so we could do both the highlights of Santarem along with a trip out to the flooded flood plain. Karim delivered in spades and finished the tour by taking us to a local restaurant for an amazing late lunch.

Our group of four was so lucky to meet Karim when another local guide cancelled on us an hour before the meeting time (Gil) and asked Karim if he would take it. We spent a full day with Karim in a large van with driver seeing the city (loved the fish market), having a delicious fish lunch at Restaurant Piracema. i would not usually order fish and I couldn't get enough of their dishes plus the smoothie-like coconut drink and local beer. Afterward we took a small boat over to the islands submerged during the flood season and spotted sloths, lizards, tons of birds and saw the rare giant lily pads. Karim educated us on Brazilian government, history and more. He's a young man of many talents and you couldn't do better than to spend some time with him.

Big praise for Karim at Big Tree Adventure Tours!!! His lightning quick return calls and messages via WhatsApp, perfect English, book references, and creatively accommodating approach to my Santarém and Fordlandia tour were key to what can only be described as a Trip of a Lifetime Experience, not a phrase I use lightly. He is well connected throughout Santarém which paid big dividends in our case. Karim is also a wealth of knowledge in cultural, environmental, historical areas. Light years beyond what anyone would assume of someone his age. Don’t let his boyish appearance fool you, he is well educated and worldly wise. Book Karim for your Fordlandia or Santarém tour, you’ll be glad you did. I have traveled up and down the Amazon every year since 2005 mainly flyfishing so I am not a first timer.

If you are interested in history, biodiversity and so on, contact Karim Abu Bakr. The guy speaks five languages and is guide and "Commander in Chief" of the "Big Tree Adventure Tours", the newest touristic company in Amazon. He knows history and biodiversity of the Amazon as anybody and does what others guides do, BETTER!!! (He just does unique stuff)!!!

We were with Karim and company for two day tours, first in Santarem and also in Alter do Chao. The tours were different enough that we don't regret doing two bookings with the same agency.
In Santarem, we were driven to acreage that was purchased to keep it as rainforest and hiked through the greenery. A local explained the use of some of the trees. I would note that there are stairs and some fallen trees to clamber over, so those with mobility issues should consider be aware.
At the end of the walk, we had a great grilled lunch with drinks on a large deck. Several of our group enjoyed the swimming hole
After that, we drove to Belterra to see the second town where Henry Ford attempted to establish a rubber plantation to supply his company's needs.
The tour in Alter do Chao was different, as we boarded a riverboat right next to the tender pier and headed down a channel to another preserve. We saw sloths in the trees, monkeys and birds. We dined on the boat on snacks made from pirarucu fish (fried as well as wonderfully smoked), manioc fries, and again had caipirinhas and other drinks. The best part was saved for the end, when we pulled up to a sandy beach we had all to ourselves and swam in the river. As with the Santarem tour, be advised that we had to climb up a board to get into/out of the boat, so if there are mobility issues it can be a consideration. The crew was all very helpful in getting us on and off the boat, but be aware.
