Claimed to be the oldest structure in Bathurst. Open air, free and walking distance from town so definitely worth a visit. Can be tricky to find with unmarked dirt roads so best to use Google Maps.

Reputed to be the oldest structure in Bathurst. The the powder magazine, built by the military before the arrival of the 1820 settlers. Obviously, it has suffered wear and tear over the almost 200 years, yet it remains on the top of the hill, still and special

We studied a tourist map of Bathurst in the courtyard of the Village green, and without a GPS or any signposts, we managed to locate this historic building without any trouble. It is reputed to have been constructed by the military around 1821 and it is claimed to be the oldest surviving structure in Bathurst.
We arrived to find a work party of local folk, clearing back the bush, tending to the roof and replanting the shrubs which had been nibbled on by the cattle. The grass around the structure was surprisingly short - obviously thanks to the cows! The view from this site is breathtaking and although no info boards exist, the stronghold is worthy of a visit.

Hi Jill
Thank you for the great feedback. Our small committee looks after the "unmanned monuments" in our special village, and feedback like yours is reward in itself. We trust you found the time to visit our other heritage sites

This feels a wee bit unloved; it is quite a way up a steep, bumpy track, and there is no information when you get there. But the view is gorgeous; in my opinion it is a nicer spot to visit than the Toposcope as it is cleaner and better kept, and the view is more unspoilt. On a nice day, it is a pleasant walk up from the village centre, with a first rate view when you get there.

Thank you for the review Caroline, there is a small committee of volunteers who use limited resources to maintain the "unmanned" heritage sites in Bathurst. Our first project was the Bradshaws Mill which we restored to the point where we now have an operating wheel and a wonderful asset and attraction. Our next project is the Toposcope which, as you point out, is in need of TLC. Please contact me at pigandwhistle@telkomsa.net if you would like to contribute towards the upkeep of these sites.

It is difficult to find this little stone building (a local showed us) and the road is bad. It is the oldest building in the town and was built by the military before the arrival of the 1820 British Settlers. It is a National Monument and was interesting to see. It took more time to find it than it takes to view.
