Bare et must for enhver med interesse for vikingetid og nordboerne i Grønland - man kunne lægge et nyt tag på kirken, så flot er ruinen med vægge der er mere end en meter tykke. Gå ikke glip af de andre ruiner og gå lidt op af skrænten bagved hvor man har et fantastisk kig ned over ruinerne. Tilmed er det et smukt og stemningsfuldt sted at opholde sig

God oplevelse af hvordan nordboernes byggekunst var omkring 1100. Vildt at tænke på, hvor meget kunne lade sig gøre med forholdsvis primitive værktøjer. Og så var ham Thorkel lidt en fræk fyr i forhold til fætteren Erik den Røde!

Outstanding Norse survival. In a lonely and remote area of the world stands the remains of the Norse settlement. The church building is impressive and still remains as the indigenous Inuit did not build housing of such materials or find this type of location suitable for their life style. If you get the chance, visit! One of the best preserved archaeological sites in Greenland.

Im Juni diesen Jahres haben wir mit Kenneth Hoegh und seinem Sohn von Sagalands Excursions eine absolut traumhafte Bootsfahrt zu der ehemaligen Wikingersiedlung in Hvalsey gemacht. Die Tour ging in rasanter Fahrt zwischen Eisbergen und wunderschönen Fjorden zu der fast magisch anmutenden Wikingersiedlung. Die Lage ist absolut traumhaft und die Reste der Siedlung, v.a. die Kirche und die große Halle sind sehr gut erhalten. Kenneth Hoegh hat uns sehr kenntnisreich und ausführlich über das Leben der Wikinger berichtet und sich viel Zeit für unsere Fragen genommen. Auf der Rückfahrt sind wir Walen begegnet, die ganz nah an unser Boot kamen. Kenneth Hoegh und sein Sohn drehten dann für uns eine Extrarunde um einen wunderschönen und riesengroßen Eisberg. Die ganze Fahrt war sehr familiär und Kenneth Hoegh und sein Sohn haben sich sehr fürsorglich um uns gekümmert. Die Tour wird mir für immer in Erinnerung bleiben als eine der schönsten, die ich je gemacht haben.!!!

A short boat ride takes you to this very peaceful place with some simple ruins. Good photographic opportunities. Our visit was at the end of July and the midges were man eaters, even through clothing. We had very stupidly left our repellent and head nets on our cruise ship.

Fomos de barco e passeio foi agradável. Visual muito bonito( demos sorte do dia estar ensolarado) É a melhor ruína Norse preservada.

Escursione consigliata che nel mio caso faceva parte del pacchetto acquistato. Su questa zona sorgono le rovine dei primi insediamenti vikinghi, che giunsero dalla vicina Danimarca.Se la giornata è soleggiata la vista è magnifica .

We are hiking fro Igaliku to Hvalsey. I have already found a GPX tract from a number of people who have do the the 2~3 day hike. I have the Discover Greenland maps also. But, they are 1; 100,000 scale.
Does anyone know the EXACT route from Hvalsey to Qaqortoq? If you have a GPX or KLM that would be fantastic!

None at all. Hvalsey has no shops. It is just remote ruins with sign boards. The heliports are just for internal routes. Remember there are no roads between settlements. The villages are only connected by boats and helicopter
We are coming in by cruise ship in August, 2020 and are wondering if you offer a trip to see the ruins.

Is it possible to arrange a guide to accompany you to the ruins themselves, and if so whom should we contact?
We have heard that the terrain is very rough. Is there a dock or a path at the site that would allow visitors to avoid some of the terrain?

Hello, how do I get from the Qaqortoq airport to the boat harbor that will take me to and from Hvalsey church? What does the boat ride cost? Is it cheaper to ride a small boat with a local or a small, independent contractor?

The airport is 5 minute walk from the heliport, turn left coming out of the airport door, you will pass through Greenland Hide Factory. You book the ticket at the tourist office at the bottom of the hill below Hotel Qaqortoq. The small boat is the best, we included the agriculture research farm as well, 750 kroner per person. It's brilliant, take warm clothes.

How do you arrange an English speaking and knowledgeable guide to the Hvalsey Church Ruins?
What is the best time to visit? Is the weather rainy and cold in June? Have the mosquitoes hatched out by the middle of June, and are they a problem? Do you need to wear a hat with mosquito netting?

Pitsi Hoegh (contact her at pitsi@qaq.gl) arranged my trip. You can arrange and pay in advance by credit card. Small boats are used - anywhere from about 16 to as few as 4, in my case. That way you will get an English speaking captain/guide. (Our guide, Karl, was a charming Greenlandic native, who offered us beer and wine on the return trip.) Other small boat owners may run trips also and they usually stand at the quayside with placards. You pay in cash in that case (make sure you have Danish Kroner because few small businesses (which most are) accept any foreign currency or credit cards.) The boat trip takes about 25 minutes. We were there in late July and there were still large icebergs in the water and the air temperature was about 48F but cooler when the boat was moving, of course, so dress in layers with a waterproof windbreaker as the outermost layer. Flies were not a problem for us but I believe the fly season varies so having a net with you might be a good idea. At Hvalsey, the terrain is uneven and rocky. Make sure you have good strong footwear and watch your step. Also, there are no public facilities of any type available so use the bathroom before you embark on your tour. Some restoration work is underway on the buildings, using the same techniques as the original builders (no mortar!) In addition to being a valuable and unique historic site, my companions and I enjoyed the total serenity and stunning beauty of the area.
