Wonderful afternoon out in Malta

Had an absolute wonderful afternoon out at the gardens. Spent a few hours walking around. Lovely fountains. Wonderful peacock's. Best trip we did in Malta. A must go trip here.

Pleasant Anytime

These gardens stand a part of the splendor of Malta. We visited in early May, a time when the blossoms were few, but the garden is mainly of exotic species of trees. It holds a huge collection of trees.
I recommend a stop to see the gardens ... entrance is free!

A peaceful refuge on a hot day

THESE gardens deserve their stop on Malta's popular northern hop-on-hop-off bus route.
I liked them so much that I visited twice, once alone and once with a friend who was equally taken with them.
They were built as part of a private residence for the French knight, Antoine de Paule, but became a magisterial palace shortly after he was chosen to become the Grand Master of the Order of St John. Today the site is the official residence of the President of Malta.
The gardens are basically a very large oblong with paths all round the perimeter and at intervals down the centre and across the gardens to allow visitors to get the most out of the displays without ever losing track of where they are.
Features include several fountains and ponds, aviaries, statuary, lovely trees and some very noisy peacocks strutting regally about.
Some of the trees date back to the early 17th century when they were planted for the original palace gardens.
Flowers carpet several areas while the ponds are not short of life either as terrapins swayed through the water or jostled for position in the sunniest basking points.
The gardens are used for a variety of events and while we were there the Malta All-Breed Rabbit Club held an event with dozens of carefully groomed rabbits of all shapes and sizes on display.
There are toilets on site while a kiosk at the entrance offers visitors everything from cold drinks to snacks.
I would recommend anyone to visit San Anton Gardens which are an oasis of green on this rocky island.

Relaxing gardens

Lovely gardens. Need a bit more information around the site. Particularly about the turtles, birds etc as well as the trees and plants 👍

Un lieu sympa à visiter

Joli jardin plein de Pans, poules, tortues et pigeons. Quelques canards mais aucune trace de cygne. Une bonne heure à passer en famille ou avec un bouquin.

Ein Ort der Erholung

Dieser Garten ist wunderschön und sehr gepflegt. Die vielen Blumen und Bäume laden ein zum spazieren gehen ein. An einigen Plätzen stehen Bänke und Brunnen. Man sollte sich etwas zeit nehmen um den Garten zu genießen. Der Eintritt ist frei. Mit dem Bus ist dieser Garten zu erreichen. Ab der Bushaltestelle geht man 2 Minuten. Ein Besuch lohnt sich.

NOT AT THEIR BEST IN MARCH

The gardens were built by a grandmaster of the Knights of St John. It is noteworthy for having a variety of trees from around the world. March is likely not the best time to tour the gardens. Not many flowers are planted. There are several water fountains. The birdlife is interesting with peacocks and a black swan [the mother was sitting on eggs]. There are turtles. You can meander through a small maze, There is even a model of a Japanese temple.

Close to nature

Beautiful gardens, lots of different trees, shaded places to sit and relax. An inviting place to walk around, read a book and absorb the beauty!
There is some conservation work going on, but it did not affect our visit!
A place to return many times!

Drab and uninteresting, wrong time of year to visit

A good place to go but may be better in the summer months when the gardens could come to life. The extensive grounds were a bit drab with not alot to look at. Quite difficult to find if going by bus, my advice ask to be put off the bus at nearest stop, we missed the stop ,( had we even known where it was) and ended up walking for miles to find it. . Will go again but at a better time of year, February was not it!!

Oasis of life

Malta cities are not green at all but this place is very beautiful oasis of life. Huge old trees, ponds, fountains and birds moving freely within tall walls separating this green historical paradise from busy city. If you want to rest for a while and sort your toughts this is the best place. Entrance for free opening hours differs in summer and winter. Definitely worth visiting. There are also free toilets so don’t worry.
