Abbiamo prenotato via email, ricevendo conferma più di un mese prima, il tour e la notte presso la struttura, nonostante questo e nonostante le loro successive conferme, un giorno prima decidiamo di mandare una nuova mail per confermare l’orario di arrivo. Ci viene detto che non solo non è più possibile soggiornare ma che la visita è stata anticipata di un giorno (la mattina successiva alle 9!). Ovviamente abbiamo rinunciato ma invitiamo caldamente tutti a non fidarsi di questa organizzazione, visto che senza la nostra mail neanche si sarebbero degnati di avvisarci, facendoci perdere soldi e tempo della nostra vacanza! Veramente inclassificabili, vergogna!

Fui en una gira con unos estudiantes, primero debes organizar un grupo e ir a la oficina para agendar una fecha, la hora y si en caso tal la comida.
Fui solo un dia y el bote demora como 30 min. Pero a una velocidad muy lenta para no golpear a asustar a los manatis y a las otras especies, en el recorrido se ven muchos animales y vegetacion, al llegar a a la playa o a la oficina a la playa nos dieron una presentacion sobre la conservacion sobre las tortugas y los manatis, luego nos llevan al avistamiento de manatis.
Recomienda llevar su comida, agua y repelente.
Buena forma de enseñar a cuidar el ambiente.

Durch die Vermittlung unseres Hotels konnten wir eine Tour zu den Seekühen buchen. Ohne nennenswerte Spanischkenntnisse wäre es wahrscheinlich sonst schwierig geworden. Vor Ort angekommen, wurden wir von Elisabeth begrüsst, die uns zwei Videos über die Seekühe und die Station gezeigt hat. Danach ging es mit dem Boot zur Beobachtungsstation. Die Seekühe werden mit Bananenblättern und -stauden angelockt. Trotzdem ist es nicht sicher, dass man welche zu sehen bekommt. Aber wir hatten Glück und schon nach ca. 10 min tauchte die erste Seekuh auf. Wir waren zwei Stunden auf der Beobachtungsstation und hatten eigentlich die ganze Zeit was zu schauen. Die 2 Stunden sind wie im Flug vergangen. Danach ging es noch eine Runde mit dem Boot auf dem Fluss entlang und zur Rangerstation am Meer. Es war ein unvergessliches Erlebnis. Aber unbedingt Mückenschutz und lange Kleidung mitnehmen.

I really don't know where to begin. AAMVECONA is an amazing organization that deserves all the help and support that can be offered.
Booking the tour was fairly easy as email responses occurred within 24 hours every time. Getting to their station is affordable as well. It's about $50 round trip from Almirante for a private taxi. Even if you know limited Spanish, the tour is worth it. Elizabeth was extremely kind, helpful, and patient with booking. We got there and immediately were offered tea and coffee. We watched some informational videos and were given a new fruit to try. She and her husband Alfredo were extremely patient and kind, especially with our limited Spanish speaking abilities. But even with a moderate understanding of the language they were able to get across all the information about their organization and the animals they protect.
The tour is split in 2 main parts, manatees then leatherbacks. The tour truly begins with a boat ride through the wetland to the manatee viewing station. The landscape is beautiful and the mangroves are the biggest I've ever seen. It was phenomenal. Once at the viewing platform, banana leaves were placed in the water to attract the manatees as it is a favorite snack of theirs. But before the manatees come, the boat with Alfredo leaves and you are left with another guide Pedro, who is equally amazing. The best part is that you must be very quiet and still up on the platform to allow the manatees to be comfortable while eating. It allows for a humane, natural environment.
Pedro then took us to meet up with Alfredo after the manatees had left, and we all went to the beach where the leatherback nursery is. There is a dorm for volunteers is, that Alfredo wants to update so more volunteers can come and help. The organization needs volunteers to walk the beaches at night to save nests and prevent poaching. He then showed us the hatchery where nests are kept until the baby turtles hatch. Everybody was so kind, dedicated, and knowledgeable. A nice perk was that we also saw sloths and beautiful birds. Alfredo and Pedro have an amazing eye for all the wildlife in San San Pond Sak. They are truly wonderful people who are so passionate and willing to share that passion for this wetland. They really are in need of help though. More volunteers, more government assistance, and more funding is all important for AAMVECONA to do their job properly. The bugs aren't that bad and spending a week or so on an empty beach with turtles and manatees would be worth the lack of Internet and other unnecessary comforts. Definitely take the time to do this tour and talk with the people who run it. They are wonderful and will inspire you. 100/10 for everything.

There are two things I liked a lot about our 1 day trip.
1. We saw lots of manaatee's from the viewing platform (about 6, together). WE watched them feefing for an hour or so. Cool wildlife watching experience. Some patience and silence required. There can be mosquitoes too. After, we visited the beach where they protect the nesting turtles, although it wasnt the reight season
2: I got the feeling that we were really contributing to AAMVECONA. Elizabeth and husband/chairman Alberto/Alfredo (?) seemed really genuine. The guide, Pedro, was great as well. I think they spend the money left after the costs of the trip ($50 pp +/- 2.5 hours) well: on the protection of the wetland.
Keep in mind that not very much English is spoken. Might be better to call than email if you come on short notice

Una experiencia de una belleza difícil de encontrar en estos días, la desmesurada exuberancia del lugar, los manatíes , poder verlos en su medio natural y tratados con tanto conocimiento , impresionante también el ver eclosionar a las tortugas baula y carey, los perezosos, las aves , el paseo en canoa por el rio, y ademas..., y lo mas importante para mi y cada vez mas difícil de encontrar, sintiéndote en familia , tratada con una amabilidad y una calidez humana increíble.

Gracias señor Caballero , por sus constante cuidados ,supera usted a su propio nombre ,gracias también por sus sorpresas culinarias , siempre tan sabrosas. Gracias Chino y Miguel por su amabilísimo trato.

Increíble experiencia en los humedales de San San Pond Sak. Realizan una labor extraordinaria conservando está joya de la naturaleza. Avistamiento de manatis en libertad y y baula. Nos encantó. Condiciones muy básicas para pernoctar pero vale la pena 100%
Gracias al Sr. Cano por el paseo en Canoa, a Pedro por sus deliciosas comidas, Miguel y Chino por su caminata nocturna.

Wir machten einen zweitägigen Aufenthalt im Humedal San San Pond Sak. Mit Seekuhtour, Übernachtung und Kanutour.
Die Seekuhtour ist sehr zu empfehlen, da es keine unvertretbare Seekuhjagt mit Motorbooten ist, sondern eine geduldige Angelegenheit auf winer Platform in den Mangrooven bis die Seekühe vorbeikommen. Die Übernachtung (10$) ist sehr rudimentär, mit Fligennetz als Fenstern, Kaltwasserdusche und Solarstrom solange Accu. Wer mehr erwartet ist im Humedal fehl am Platz! Dann nur Tagestour (45$) buchen!
Auch die Küche mit Grundwasser-Ziehbrunnen ist sehr rudimäntär. Selbstkochen möglich (10$ Gebühr), bedingt jedoch das alle Lebensmittel selbst mitgebracht werden müssen. Alternativ kann man sich auch vom Refugiomitarbeiter bekochen lassen. Es wird tipisch griolisch Küche serviert, was der Tagesfang, der Garten hinter dem Haus und das angrenzende umland hergibt.
Leider konnte unsere Kanutour (20$) auf Grund sehr schlechten Wetters nicht durchgeführt werden. Das Geld der Kanutour wurde ohne Nachfrage unsererseits rückerstattet!
Die Mitarbeiter und weitläufigen Nachbarn der Refugios sind zudem äusserst nette und interesante Leute, wodurch der Aufenthalt auch ein tollen Einblick ins Leben der Landbevölkerung gibt!

La organización Aamvecona, que se dedica a la protección de tortugas y manatíes en el humedal de San San Pond Sak, ofrece una experiencia maravillosa. Es cierto que sus instalaciones son básicas, pero eso se compensa con la calidad humana de los trabajadores y de los voluntarios de la organización.
Todos ellos nos acogieron con cariño, nos enseñaron todo lo que sabían, nos ofrecieron aquello que tenían y nos hicieron pasar un tiempo inolvidable con ellos.
El humedal es espectacular, un paraje lleno de vida, en el que se pueden observar perezosos, manatíes, aves y, con suerte, tortugas. Hay que recordar que esto no es un zoo y que ellas deciden si salen o no.
"Caminar la playa" de noche, en busca de huevos, para llevarlos a los nidos, junto con los voluntarios, fue precioso. Hay que recordar que estas personas al día siguiente tienen que trabajar y estar patrullando 5 km de playa hasta las 4 am tiene mucho mérito. El ambiente y el buen rollo que había nos contagiaron.
Sólo tengo buenas palabras para ellos.
Todos ellos nos acogieron con cariño, nos enseñaron todo lo que sabían, nos ofrecieron aquello que tenían y nos hicieron pasar un tiempo inolvidable con ellos.

This place is amazing! I had a group of 36 students to go here. It is extremely basic, like camping, with lots of bugs, but if you're prepared, it can be one of those amazing experiences you talk about for the rest of your life. All my communication before was with Elizabeth, and she was very kind and helpful. They provided breakfast, lunch, dinner, bunk beds with sheets and screens on the windows.
The highlight of the trip: We went on the night turtle walk, where they split our large group into 3 shifts. We saw several huge leatherback turtles on the beach, laying eggs. One boy from our group was able to help Elizabeth bag up the eggs and carry them back to the protected area, a truly once in a lifetime opportunity.
I didn't know as much about these turtles beforehand, but after looking up some information online, I really appreciated what they were trying to do there. They speak limited English, but my Spanish translations were able to explain to the group what was necessary. Highly recommended, contact them in advance and they will sort out all of the details.

Ik wil graag weten of je deze tours ook van te voren kan boeken?
Of kan je dit makkelijk boeken als je daar eenmaal verblijft?
Ik heb een paar nachten geboekt op Isla Bastimentos. Ik heb veel gelezen over Aamvecona en dat spreekt mij erg aan.
Vooral omdat de toeristenstroom beperkt blijft en dat ze er alles aan doen om het gebied te behouden.
Maar ze reageren niet op mijn mail, dus vandaar mijn vraag. Hartelijk dank alvast! Groeten, Marleen uit Utrecht

We are staying at Loma Partida until May 1st and have our own boat so we can come to your headquarters. Is this the right time of year to see manatees? We are happy to take a tour if the manatees can be seen at this time of year.
