We have just come back from an amazing Halloween event. Really well done and the gardens all lit up and spooky were beautiful. Also great touches with the actors. We all had a lovely time. Very well done thank you.

A very attractive and different kind of garden if, like us, you are used to more formal National Trust like gardens.
It is slightly tricky to navigate your way around as it has so many little paths and areas to enjoy. We noticed some letters and numbers dotted around but didn't know what they referred to - perhaps it was us!
The site is on quite a steep hill so do bear that in mind if you don't like walking up and down damp (sometimes grassy) slopes.

Many thanks for your review. I am really pleased to hear that you enjoyed your visit. The numbers and letters are to identify different areas for cataloguing. There is a tree walk available on line with various interesting trees identified by numbers. Hope to welcome you again soon

This is one of those gardens that, if we lived locally we'd buy a season ticket. Our visit on an overcast day in late September not only showed a lot of colour still in the many borders but promised great things forthcoming, eg the winter garden, the bulbs under the trees in spring , to say nothing of Rhododendrons Camellias and the Laburnham Arch in late spring. We had a good lunch in the tea rooms, which still use disposable cutlery and containers. We would definitely detour to visit again.

Thank you so much for your very positive review. The garden, although famous for Rhododendrons and Azaleas, is definitely a Year round attraction so well worth the annual pass.

Very busy. Not disabled friendly even though we phoned up and asked and were told it was. It is very hilly and stony so not good for a wheelchair.

The restaurant/cafe was expensive and the coffee was not great just half a cup.

There were so many wasps outside we needed to move inside (this is not anyone’s fault)

£4 each to get in but we literally went in got a coffee and came out as we couldn’t get the wheelchair anywhere else.

Hello and thank you for your review. I apologise that you did not enjoy your day and found some difficulty at the garden. We are a hillside garden and therefore have some areas that are almost impossible with a manual wheelchair dependant upon who is pushing. To try to improve this situation we were fortunate to receive funding from the Big Lottery who paid for a Tramper wheelchair which is available free and can be booked in advance through the office. The wasps are another problem. We are currently on top of them I think. They were made much worse by people leaving jam pots and drinks cans on tables rather than putting them in the bin. This seems to have brought them in from a 50 mile radius. I notice that you paid £4 entry fee so you must have visited during our Plant Hunters Fair. This is a special rate as a fund raising day and always the busiest day of the year. If you were to visit another day I am sure you would find that there are many more staff about to help and space to be able to get around. If you would like to book the Tramper please phone the office to book

Lovely gardens but the shop and tea room did appear to be suffering from staff shortages. Shop was unstaffed so had to pay for merchandise in the tea room so adding to the queues for food/drink. Service for food was slow and arrived after drinks had gone cold. Surprising given the general clientele but staff seemed to have difficulties accommodating disabled customers. Perhaps they were just having a bad day but experience didn't leave us wanting to rush back.

Thank you for your review and apologies that your visit was less than perfect. We do strive for perfection in the gardens. I will of course follow up on the points raised and would appreciate being able to chat with you in more detail about the problems in accommodating disabled customers. Given that we are a hillside garden, and there are some inevitable limitations, we feel that we are very inclusive in many ways. We would certainly aim to put right anything that we are not aware of. If you could email that would be most appreciated. As a relatively small charity we rely on volunteers for some of the roles around the site and are extremely for the time and help they give to us. Indeed we would struggle without them. For 5 days of the week the Giftroom is manned by volunteers. if they are not about at a particular time of day we do ask customers to pay in the Tearoom. This is not normally any problem. I hope this goes some way to answering your points and would certainly look forward to your email.

We decided to visit this unusual garden whilst staying at Trentham and it is certainly delightful to look around as the upper part of it was initially structured as a private garden - the lower part being sympathetically added more recently. Rambling paths take you to different areas. One place I couldn't find was The Bothy - it was on the Map! If we visit again it will probably be earlier in the year when the Azaleas are in bloom. We also visited the cafe where we both had a drink and scone which was enjoyable. However, everything used was disposable which creates most waste but then to be instructed to take everything out to a bin to dispose of and clean our own table is really unacceptable. The staff should be responsible for this to ensure it is done properly.

Hello there, Many thanks for your review. I am thrilled that you found the garden 'delightful'. It certainly is a magical place and loved by many. I am sorry that you were upset by the use of disposables in the kitchen. Disposables have formed an important part of our Covid security. Very early on we identified that staff handling and clearing crockery and cutlery could result in spreading Covid. Therefore a decision was taken that where possible we would use disposables and would ask customers to place their own waste in the bins provided. At no point did we ask visitors to wipe the tables. I would just say that so far our policies have worked and we have not had to close due to any Covid cases. The staff are all safe and the majority of our customers have appreciated our efforts.

Well maintained garden with a variety of different areas to see but when we went, (late July) there wasn't a lot in flower. I'd go again, but earlier in the year (or later to see the winter garden). We'd just missed the irises which, I'm sure, would have looked great. New glasshouse is stylishy designed - not huge, but worth taking a look. Café is fine for a light snack. Service was slow but we weren't in a hurry and the queue wasn't too bad. Terrace was pretty to sit outside and eat our baguettes, toasties and quiche. Seating/tables inside also looked well maintained. Plates and cups were made of paper and cutlery of wood (possibly so they didn't have to wash -up/Covid...?) I hope they'll be able to use 'proper' tableware at some point as it definitely took away some of our enjoyment of the food. Next time we might take a picnic instead. Toilets (in car park and next to café) were clean and easy to find. Gift shop had a variety of things on offer - nothing too expensive. They had a few items of second-hand china on sale that had been donated. They were also selling a small variety of cottage garden plants.

Many thanks for taking time to review the Dorothy Clive Garden. I look forward to seeing you in May/ June when the Rhododendrons are in full bloom. The disposables in use in the Tearoom are indeed a Covid measure and I think have gone a long way to enabling us to remain open all the way through the pandemic. They form a small part of the strategy to keep everybody safe.

I am an avid gardener and have visited a great many gardens over the years. Having visited the Dorothy Clive Garden this June, I now rank it as my absolute favorite of all time!
The planting is beautiful, there is a really wide range of things to see and enjoy, the size of the site is just perfect for a lovely relaxing day, the food in the cafe is excellent and the entrance fee is extremely reasonable. What more could you ask for??!!

Discovered this magical place by accident. The garden is wonderfully kept and stuffed full of unusual plants. There was a classic car display for Fathers’ Day. We had a delicious picnic from the tea room, and stumbled across the ridiculously talented Hannah and Zdenek singing and playing violin so richly it was like an embrace from a long-missed, close-friend. Back to the tea room for a farewell cup of tea, and to be raucously serenaded by Lost the Plot with Riding Shotgun and other classics.
What a treat for Fathers’ Day!! I would give you all ten stars if I could.
Look out for other events here.
