Great site with more than I expected to see for the €4 entrance fee. There are some good descriptions inside the main building and the video is shown in English and Greek and worth watching. We would recommend watching the video before visiting the amphitheatre as it helps you to visualise what it would have been like. The site is uneven so I would suggest wearing trainers. Theresa drinks vending machine but taking water is suggested. Also would recommend calling in at Cretan Corner Taverna in Aptera village if around at lunch time.

An unmissable site in Aptera, easily accessible (the road is paved) and with ample parking available. Admission costs only 4 euros. The site is well preserved and well maintained, there is an impressive Roman cistern, Roman baths, an Orthodox chapel and other ruins. Next door (included in the ticket) is also the ancient amphitheater, in a frame of olive trees, and the ruins of a Roman Villa. Highly Recommendation to visit, it is a pleasant immersion in history!
P.s. better at sunset

The site is full of nice surprises. Bridge between the Minoan, Hellenistic, Roman and Venetian civilizations, the site is on a promontory overlooking the sea that gives a special atmosphere. Some remains in good condition give a good idea of the original site. The ancient theatre is beautiful. Test the acoustics!!

It’s a wonderful site and well worth the visit. It’s less than half an hour’s drive from Chania. The roads are twisty but generally fairly wide and not as stressful as they might seem from the map. What’s there to see is well documented elsewhere. It’s very impressive. Take drinks as there is no cafe and it gets very hot. Lady in the kiosk was very friendly and informative. Entrance fee is only €4. I think they should charge more but give everyone a bottle of water.

Fascinating site. Lots of parking. Toilets but no refreshments (there are some tavernas in the nearby village however). Very friendly staff. It's worth walking to all of the areas in the site The cisterns and the amphitheatre are worth the entry fee alone. You can also drive down to the old fortress nearby and look at the view and small exhibition for (I think it was) a Euro. (There is a newer large fortress nearer to the sea which is NOT open to the public).

If you are on your way to Chania really worth a stop! €4 entrance (adults). You get a brochure and along the ruins are signs with explanations.
Unlike Knossos, the largest tourist-trap in Crete, Aptera is interesting and authentic.

Go visit! Being in Platanias for our holiday, and with two small kids, we didn't fancy trekking over to Knossos, but wanted to see some history. Stumbled upon the site while trying to decide where to go and am so glad we did.
Having seen the archaeological remains in Chania, and some of the finds from there (Kydonia) as well as Aptera, we were keen to check it out.
There wasn't a tour and we didn't fancy getting the bus so opted for a taxi at 40 euros both ways. The taxi dropped us at the entrance and we knew we'd done the right thing. The site is big, and super quiet.
There is a small later monetary with a beautiful courtyard garden that also houses a toilet if needed (it's clean and nice).
A temple dedicated to Apollo and Artemis. A larged arched cistern from Roman times. Two Roman baths houses and a second L shaped cistern.
An amphitheatre, Roman house and an ottoman fortification further out.
All in all loved this trip but do bring plenty of water, snacks, suncream and a hat. It's large, open and the only real facility is the loo. That said it's brilliant and we had the best time.

Beautiful monastery in a natural site. The fortress is impressive on the bay but was unfortunately closed during our visit.

Are there now opening times for Aptera. Last time we went 2 years ago the site was supposed to be closed on Mondays. Looking forward to seeing the amphitheatre site again.

Yes there are opening times. 10 til 4 I think. The amphitheatre is now really good. However as the previous person says..... not too reliable. Not sure about the Monday thing.

How can I get to Aptera if I don't drive and can't use a car? May be there's a bus? Or I can buy a tour to this place? Any advice? Thank you!
撰写日期:2017年6月16日
Of course you can get a tour there from Chania, though it'd be quite expensive and not that comfortable. On the other hand, you'll have a guide and no risk of getting there when the sight is closed...
TripAdvisor doesn't allow links in answers, but you may google for "platanias-taxivan ancient aptera tour" and find one of the appropriate websites yourself.

Hello does anyone know if ancient aptera is open Easter Sunday? I know it's closed Mondays.
Thanks

Hi Abbs,
I know my answer to your question is well overdue but it might help some other visitors to the ancient city of Aptera.
Greek Orthodox Easter is a very important celebration for the Greek people and all the archaeological areas and museums in Greece are closed on the Easter Sunday.

Hi. How far is Aptera from Chania and is there transportation to get there and back?
撰写日期:2016年8月4日
Sorry it took me so long to answer. These ruins are so so easy a drive from chania. So close and easy. YES rent a car. We used Rental Center Crete for our rental car.
We loved it. NO hassle. And we arrived at the airport to find them in the lobby with our name on a placard/paper waiting for us. The car was right outside. No waiting in the line for Hertz, budget etc. That was a very long line.

How do we get there from Chania Venetian harbour by public transport ?
撰写日期:2015年11月30日
From the harbor to the Ruins, probably a 30 minute drive. We rented a car the whole time we were in Chania. We have traveled over lots of Europe over the years. Some places are simply public transport is the way to go. And other places, not so much. Chania and Crete is one of those places. We did not really look into public transportation because all of our friends who have went before us, rented a car. And that we found was paramount in getting around this island. We used Rental Center Crete and it was a very good experience.
