If I’m correct, the gentleman in the ladies’ living room with Aesop’s fables is an unpaid volunteer. If so, he should be paid. He really brought the castle to life. Not only did he engage my wife and I, but he told us things which weren’t on the (brilliant) audio guide, and our granddaughter was entranced by his wonderful charm. He asked if she could count to a hundred or a thousand and she said she could - obviously she can’t because she falls asleep at the drop of a hat. But the gentleman asked her if she could count the stairs and come back to him and tell him how many she counted. At the same time, he told my wife and I about the decorations and informed us of the history of the castle. I was particularly interested to hear the man who basically built Cardiff was nearly blind and my wife loved the story of how Ninian Park got its name. The man told us he didn’t speak Welsh but it wasn’t a problem because we had the audio tours in Welsh. This is a must-see for anyone who’s ever driven along the A470 and thought ‘I wonder what that building is’.
Words to the wise: it isn’t as small as it looks from the road and being somewhat fit is essential to see everything. It could do with some disability access but I understand it wouldn’t be practical. Also, if you walk to the castle, be prepared for some cardio you haven’t tried since 1970. Even walking from the entrance to the castle grounds to the front gate is arduous.
I’m looking forward to bringing my other grandkids to the castle, and maybe even my own kids if I’m lucky.

We really enjoyed our recent visit to Castell Coch, which was a lot bigger than I expected, so plenty to see. The staff were super friendly and the hand held audio guides were very informative and easy to use. We also enjoyed a delicious coffee in the cafe. I have probably driven past Castell Coch on the M4 thousands of times, and always meant to visit - and having now done so I was delighted to finally get there. Well worth a visit.

Planned a walk today from Radyr to Castell Coch to have a coffee. Very disappointed as we had to pay the admission fee for the castle to access the cafe. The fee was £8 which I wouldn’t mind paying if I wanted to see the castle but we only wanted a coffee on our walk. Surely they are losing a lot of revenue because not every visitor wants to enter as many just want to walk the woods.
Short sighted in my view and a revenue faux pas.

Dropped in to the castle today while on a hike through the woods that surround the castle, reasonably priced (including the tearoom) and the staff could not have been more friendly. Everyone that we spoke to was incredibly helpful and polite.
Spent an hour wandering around the castle and to be honest we could have spent a lot longer, Cadw have done an exceptional job of helping you to interpret the history of the place.
The woods and hills around are exceptionally well waymarked and tidy, all in all an excellent experience.

Always seen it from the road but this was our first visit. An absolutely magical place full of history. Some of the stairs were a challenge for me but it was most definitely worth the struggle!

Castell Coch, or the ‘Red Castle’, rises up from the ancient beech woods of Fforest Fawr like a vision from a fairy tale. Yet these great towers with their unmistakable conical roofs only hint at the splendour within.
Given free rein by the third Marquess of Bute, architect William Burges didn’t hold back. The highly decorated interiors and rich furnishings of Castell Coch make it a dazzling masterpiece of the High Victorian era.
But it’s no exotic folly. Underneath the mock-medieval trappings you can still trace the impressive remains of a 13th-century castle, once used as a hunting lodge by the ruthless Marcher Lord Gilbert de Clare.
The interiors are a feast for the eyes and visitors to South Wales really must come here.

My wife found this on the internet as it was close to where we were staying. Great choice, well laid out. When we entered we were given an audio guide which we used in the various rooms to tell us the history of the place. The tour was well put together and easy to follow. Not too crowded we were able to go at our on pace and spend time in each room to take in all the different interesting items. Great gift shop also with some interesting items for sale.

This is my third visit to Castle Coch, It's become a tradition every time we visit Wales... which is endorsement enough I think :-)
Disappointingly the coffee shop/cafe was closed (post Covid closure?) and doesn't look to reopen anytime soon... a shame as it was part of the reason for stopping here en-route to Bridgend.
We did catch a Bride arriving for her wedding, which only made the magical castle feel more like something from a storybook :-)

Prachtig kasteel met goede gratis audio tour. Je kan bijna overal in en er wordt ook veel achtergrond informatie gegeven. Het uitzicht is prachtig en de mensen zijn heel vriendelijk

Visited today for the umpteenth time, but this time with my kids. I love this place, even if it is a bit fake. It is a Victorian castle build to look like a medieval castle, so it is a lot better preserved than the genuine articles - but that is because it is not technically genuine. However it is a lovely building in a nice location, in beautiful condition inside and out. Today was better than ever as they had children's activities in two rooms and a punch and judy show. I thought my kinds would tolerate 30 mins at most, but we were there two and a half hours. There were staff in costume available to answer questions about the castle, and about history in general. I really enjoyed talking to them with my 8 year old daughter, who had plenty of questions. Entry fee was less than £30 for a family with up to 3 children.
I cannot fault it in any way, but I would point out that it is a Victorian building with no disabled access. The stairs are medieval style spiral staircases, which were never intended to be accessible. If you have limited mobility, you need to be aware of this as you could end up very disappointed by your visit.

Hi Rachel, unfortunately dogs are not allowed at Castell Coch due to the nature of the building.

I had some awful experience in this castle last weekend. It seems someone called Kin3 had the same experience in May, but it didn't improve at all since May until now.
I wonder why this lady with long curl hair (Lesley?) in the ticket desk still hasn't got any improvement in her manner and attitude? She needs some training, I can't believe this kind of people can work in such a beautiful castle. What a shame!
We just wanted to have some tea in the tea room which said free entry, but she was unhappy we use the toilet in the castle courtyard and she thought we wanted to sneak into the castle without a ticket. She shouted to me and my daughter in public when we were just waiting for the toilet.
If you don't believe people and think we wanted to go inside the castle without a ticket, why you allow people free entry to the tea room?
If you have a tea room, why there is no toilet inside?
If the toilet in courtyard is the only option, why you are unhappy customers use it?
Such a beautiful castle inside the forest. Unfortunately there are some awful people working there.

Just copy Kin3’s experience in May 2019 here. It’s the same experience to mine.
26 May 2019 Kin3 :
Stopped here to have a look round the castle, eat a picnic and grab a coffee. We were a party of 10. 4 of us wanted to look round the castle, all 10 of us got tea room tickets to use the cafe and toilets. Lesley on the ticket desk proceeded to tell my party we weren't allowed to be in the courtyard while we waited for everyone to use the toilet, we wouldnt be allowed eat sandwiches on the benches and that we were 'going all over the place' when in fact we were just waiting for everyone to use the toilet before proceeding to go to the cafe as a group, while we were waiting two of our party had decided to check out the gift shop. Her attitude was so awful having stared at us since we had entered the courtyard and being asked to make way for paying customers to use the toilets despite there being no queue and half of us being paying customers we decided to leave because we felt so unwelcome. We didnt buy anything from the gift shop, didnt buy any coffees and asked for a full refund whilst relaying our feedback to which she rolled her eyes and smiled patronisingly stating "I'm just a smiley person". This was infuriating and she shrugged the whole situation off. I hope she receives some training in manners, courtesy and the castle takes on board that it should be a more open and welcoming place so that they receive more custom. Lesley lost the castle between £60-100 and will no doubt continue to do so if this is her attitude. Instead of chastising and making us feel awkward and uncomfortable she could have simply tried to upsell more tickets and create enthusiasm and excitement.
What is the wheelchair access like ?

Other than getting into the main courtyard and the rooms on that level, I don’t recall it being wheelchair accessible at all.

Hello, if we are traveling by train, is this an easy spot to get to? Any other suggestions in Wales? Our time is limited and I would like to do at least a day in Wales

Castell Coch is quite small even though it is beautiful. It’s also not an old castle but it’s on the site of one. It was built for the Marquess of Bute. As you only have a short trip planned I’d say Cardiff Castle is more impressive and is right in the centre. I’d also reiterate the advice of Carla w and recommend you visit Cardiff Bay and take a look at the Assembly’s Sennedd building which is wonderful and also The renovated Norwegian Church where Ronald Dahl was christened. There’s usually a craft fair in there.

At certain times of the year the tea room offers cream teas. - a scone, clotted cream, butter and Welsh jam, with a hot drink of choice, for £5.50. Hhowever the menu is subject to seasonal variations, so it is worth a phone call before visiting to find out what is likely to be available, and at what cost. At the moment there are cream teas, but also very reasonably priced soup with bread and butter, sandwiches, panini and toastier.
