Very Interesting and Fascinatingly Quirky Independent Museum

We went on a special Steam Day, so was great to see some of the engines in motion. Really enjoyed the historical aspects and where they came from and what their original purpose was. Also really fascinating about how the old telephone exchanges worked - you can get a real hands on experience and we learnt all about the actual Morse Code messages between the Titanic and Carpathian...very interesting! Nice cafe area with little shop selling new stuff as well as a second hand book/bric-a-brac section. All in all - a really great visit and thank you to everyone who made us feel so welcome.

A fascinating half day

A unique experience, particularly on a "crank-up" day when most of the engines , both diesel and steam, are in full operation. Some of them are whoppers!
The staff and volunteers are all very friendly, knowledgeable and keen to answer questions .
The additional marine radio and telephone exhibits are extremely nerd-friendly.
Well worth a visit by young and old, if you are interested in engineering.
You do need satnav to find it though.

Brilliant museum

I love this museum, I'm a big fan of machines generally and this place ticked lots of boxes for me. Even my wife who is not especially interested in these sort of things enjoyed. There is plenty of parking and it is well signposted so easy to find. It has exhibitions of a variety of engines some of which will be running on any one day. There is a display of telephones and how old style telephone exchanges work (which is much more interesting than it sounds!) and a radio room. All for a very reasonable price. The place is run by volunteers who must work very hard to keep everything running. It is worth bearing in mind that the museum closes in the winter, but that does mean it is constantly being improved, just check the opening times before visiting.

Wonderful place BRITISH Machines that drove the world.

We the British invented everything and here are some stunning examples of some fine machines that powered The British isles, The Empire and the world.
Friendly Knowledgeable staff. Nice little cafe and plenty of Parking.
If you have ANY interest in Internal combustion engines or engines in general You really need to visit here

Great place to visit

A wonderful place to visit, we stayed for 5 hours, and we're very impressed with it, as a place run by volunteers everyone should be very proud of how much effort, work and information they have, if you are interested in this sort of thing, you will not be disappointed, great value for money,

Even I loved it.

Visited here with my husband and brother, as something different to do. Well, we were bowled over by the scope of the place. The welcome was warm, the ice cream was cold... I had thought we might spend an hour here but we had to drag ourselves away after more than two and a half hours. Please support this gem of an attraction.

If you like IC engines you are going to need all day here

Internal Fire has been on my radar for years, but too far for a day trip so we put this off for when we had time to stay in the area overnight. I'm so pleased we did - arrived just after they opened and left at closing time - there is SO MUCH to see here.

Attention to detail is clear in every display. This is as far from that brush painted Lister D pumping water into a tin bath on the rally field as it's possible to get. A large collection of rare engines displayed in working situations with explanetary notes. This is excellent.

The Internal Fire theme includes turbines, large and small.

The radio room and telephone hall are excellent and informative displays and offer several hands on opportunites for all ages.

Adding the steam hall made no sense to me. I love steam museums but that's not why I drove over 200 miles to see this one.

Pleasant cafe serving good selection of hot/dold drinks and cold snacks at very modest prices.

We stayed nearby at Poppit Sands Youth Hostel.

Flying visit

Had a wander around the museum. Found it interesting. Lady let us in for free as we didn't arrive till late and only had just under a hour left to get round it all. Gave a generous donation. Brother didn't think they had enough souvenirs. Charity shop could be more spread out. Clean and tidy. Toilets clean.
If your a lad then you'd enjoy it. If you are a women like me then you'd find it boring with the odd bits interesting. Great learning for kids. Got a small cafe on site. Didn't use it but it looked tidy and clean. Staff was friendly and polite.

Amazing place

My husband is an engineer working on diesel engines and absolutely loved this museum. Well laid out with plenty of information about all the engines and machinery. Had refreshments in the cafe and spent as long talking to the very knowledgeable staff as we did looking at the engines.

A must if you like big engines

If you are a fan of the internal combustion engine, this is a must. Various engines are running at different times. The kids enjoyed it as much as the adults.
