In diesem kleineren Informationszentrum erfährt man viel Wissenswertes über den Lebensraum und auch die Gefährdung der Mekong Giant Soft-Shell Turtles.
Gemeinsam mit den Menschen der Umgebung ist es zum Glück gelungen, dass wieder mehr Schildkröten Eier legen und ihre Nachkommen geschützt schlüpfen und in den ersten Tagen überleben.
Wer mehr über diese Tiere erfahren möchte, ein Besuch lohnt sich.
Gemeinsam mit den Menschen der Umgebung ist es zum Glück gelungen, dass wieder mehr Schildkröten Eier legen und ihre Nachkommen geschützt schlüpfen und in den ersten Tagen überleben.
Wer mehr über diese Tiere erfahren möchte, ein Besuch lohnt sich.

We were lucky that our Tuk Tuk driver, Ploy knew about the turtles as he came in with us, explained the turtles lifecycle and what the conservation centre was doing. He then showed us how to feed them without getting bitten.
If it wasn’t for Ploy the visit would have been very disappoint as the centre staff did no more than take our money and put a video on.

Kleine ruimte met een aantal glazen bakken waarin jonge schildpadden zitten. Buiten is nog een groot bassin waarin schilpadden zouden zitten, maar die hebben we niet gezien. Wel een interessante videopresentatie over de lokale activiteiten om de bijzondere soort schildpadden die hier voorkomt voor uitsterven te behoeden.

It´s great to support place like this, Cantor´s softshell turtle is a very unique creature and people in this project do what they can to safe it without any government help. But we didn´t feel it was worth it for four dollars and a long journey. The center is very small and when we visited nobody spoke a word in english there. Also we didn´t get any ticket so I´m not really sure where our money ended.
Lady there showed us two aquariums with Cantor´s softshell turtle hatchlings (this part was really interesting), said - "BABY", then led us to three other small enclosures with different turtle and tortois species and then turned on two random videos about the project. The second was in such a bad quality it was impossible to understand.
The whole thing took us 15 minutes as there was nothing else to see, read and especially ask any questions.
I would rather pay less (or nothing?) for etrance fee but give some donation. As in other reviews - we were probably just unlucky with totally non-english speaking staff.

This conservation centre is a nice idea and is very cheap to visit ($4 entry). There are a few different species of turtle to see, and one of the workers could speak some English to provide a bit of background information. There is a lot of potential in this place, however it is currently lacking in size and there were only about 15 turtles to see. If you're in the area, pop by and support a local cause, but don't go out of your way to visit

If you’re on a trip from Kratie to see the dolphins, you really should include going a bit further north to see the turtles too.
We found it to be well worth the $4 entry fee, which is clearly needed to fund the care and rehabilitation of the turtles. The turtle conservationist we met was a great guide. He spoke excellent English, and explained things very well to us and we learnt a lot. I previously knew nothing about the soft shell turtle! They also have several other types of turtle and even a couple of land tortoise!
This is the kind of place that needs the support of tourists. The money helps fund the conservation of turtles and goes toward educating the local children about them too.

Klar ist es "nur" eine Schildkrötenstation. Doch man sollte bedenken, dass diese hier die bereits ausgestorben geglaubten Cantorschildkröten schützt. Und zwar nicht hier vor Ort sondern an den Mekongufern wo die letzten dieser Art noch Eier legen.
Das wissen vom Herrn, der wirklich sehr viel wusste wurde uns alle Tiere gezeigt. Super spannend und sehr ausführlich.

It's a small operation doing their best to conserve the rare Mekong Turtles with local labour and very thin funding. But you get to see the turtles and learn the story.

The conservation centre does not look attractive from the outside and when you go into the main building it is very basic. However the staff were super helpful as we were a big volunteering group that went to visit the centre. the staff gave us a presentation in English and Khmer about the turtles and why they are endangered etc! Outside in the garden area is it beautiful and full of sweet little turtles and tortoises, it was one of my favourite trips in Kratie!

Hi Shannon,
I can't remember the exact cost but it's a small fee (a few US $).
My recommendation for Kratie, if you're not travellig by motorbike, is to hire a tuk tuk driver for the day.
We used a guy called Ben who spoke perfect English and took us to the "man and woman hill" with the pagodas > a palm sugar making place > river rapids > 1000 (or 100) pillar pagoda which is right next to the turtle centre.
The final place is to see the river dolphins, depending on the time of year you are travelling.
