UNESCO site recommended in all tourist guides. In just under an hour walk under the sun. Typical houses some with thatched roof. Many craft shops, few bars and restaurants. Interesting but not unmissable. Free entry, you pay only for parking

Hollókő is the perfect place if you want to see the history of hungary not only from the perspective of castles and cities, but from the perspective of villages, too. 🇭🇺

The village has been converted from a place where people live to a photography location. I believe that once upon a time it might have been interesting and relevant as an important example of traditional Palloc village, but today all you'll find is aimed at tourists. If you go, know that you'll have to pay to park, that you won't see any "authentic" artisans at work, and that you can walk/loop town in well under an hour.
There is a walk/hike from town up to the castle, and the fee to enter the castle (August 2024) at USD$ 8.50/ticket is quite high compared to other historical sites we visited during out 6 week tour of Hungary and Romania. For us the value wasn't there since the entire castle has been re-built since the 1960's. Basically it is a Disneyland like recreation, because the old/historical building had fallen into such bad disrepair.
We made the mistake of booking an overnight stay in the village and there were essentially no services available, with only one restaurant that served 8 venison dishes as the option for dinner and a place that offered beer for the locals (no food, no menu). Thankfully we had sandwiches with us, (intended for consumption during the next day's driving) to eat for dinner.

I´m so glad and proud that the locals have keep this village so nice and well kept.
We stayed over at a lovely newly renovated house, the Kégli apartmanok és fürdőház Hollókő. I couldn’t find this housing here on TripAdvisor, but you may find them on booking.com. Lovey stay, very vell kept place, brand new, comfortable standard, excellent service and great breakfast. It also gave access to a bath house with sauna etc. The village is just lovely, with bakeries, jeweller’s workshop, doll museum, restaurant, cafes and more. If you visit this lovely village there are two more things I can recommend in the area. First is the Hollokö Castle, well worth the visit now that they reopened it after a reform. Lots of stairs to walk up and down but it has more to show for than it looks from outside. Secondly, there are some walking tracs for also the non-experienced hikers. Takes about 45 minutes to arrive to the large palm of a hand where you can absorb the local nature and views.

During your holiday in Hungary you cannot miss a visit to this village.
Many houses along the way.
Flowers everywhere, really beautiful views.
A very characteristic little church all really special.
You can sleep in the area so you can enjoy the village in peace.

We felt the existing tours were too lengthy and too expensive to consider. We therefore booked a driver and car for half a day for a total of around Euro 260. The drive from Budapest is straightforward and it took around 1 hour 15 minutes. We had around two hours in the village and castle including a quick refreshment stop. This was just around enough time - but 3 hours is probably optimal.
The village has been heavily restored and you could argue about its authenticity. Most house have been converted into guest houses and shops selling lace, ceramics, minerals etc etc. however, the vernacular architecture is retained to a degree. The countryside around is extremely pretty and there is a fantastic view from the castle. This area is well worth the visit.

CHECK DATES of when the village closes for the season. We went there on a tour Nov 11. Most of the shops and own were closed. Only one person in folk costume was there long enough to show us the outfit, and was gone shortl thereafter. This could be a wonderfult stop, if it were totally functioning.

Amazing location, historic village, great all day activity. The walk from Hollókő to Rimóc is beautiful (or bike). 5 miles or so each way. Get some ice cream on your return and support the local artists.

Lovely UNESCO heritage site. This attraction was located about an hour and a half out of Budapest. The village is a 14th century farming community with docents dressed in costumes and explain how life was in those days. Two tourists were chosen from the group and dressed up in costumes. There was a small restaurant were guests were treated to a filling meal.
