This place is an iconic place in Loíza. The Ayala family help us to keep and know our African roots and History. Every year on the last Saturday of July, they celebrate El día de Santiago Apostol (Loíza’s patron or saint) with a huge party, were everybody can dance at the Bomba rhythm. You can also stop on any Sunday and buy local handcrafts or souvenirs.

Visit a family of artists that celebrate life with their art. Painting sculpture and jewelry for viewing and for sale in this simple home and working studio. Famous for their music and their dancing the bomba, family members welcome you in Spanish and English. A must stop in the historic town of Loiza, where the Ayala family is famous for the masks made from coconut shells.

It is a hut wherein there are vegigante masks on display. Noone was there to receive me and there was no activity to be seen. This is not a must stop, this is a, if you are driving by, stop here stop. There is no cost to see it.

Unfortunately when we arrived, we were either too early or too late for an impromptu Bomba/Rumba try out for a celebration that I believe will take place in July 2018. When we approached the Ayalla home, it was like they were expecting my daughter and I. They were so warm and welcoming. Once again, we felt like family. There was some damage, due to the hurricanes that PR experienced 2017/2018, but true to an abiding spirit, they are rebuilding. Love them!!!

This was a great experience. I stopped in search of purchasing a mask and received a great bit of knowledge on the history of the Ayala family and their mask making business. I was shown how the masks are made and learned about the father who started the tradition as the mask maker for the annual festival in Loiza. One of the elder son's has continued the tradition since the father passed in 1980. One of the sister's spent a good deal of time with me and helped me select the perfect mask for my home. I highly recommend a visit. It is an easy drive. If you have trouble, just call the number and you will be guided to the location. (Just head east from San Juan on the 187 and go to mile marker 23.)
