A 30 minute direct journey on the S.Tog train from central Copenhagen to Sorgenfri and 10 minutes walk along well sign posted route got us here. This open air museum covers quite a space and holds a variety of buildings that have been brought from other parts of the country to preserve the culture. Going into each building was interesting, especially being able to see the development over time. There was some information provided outside most buildings but nothing inside, which was something of a shame.

Love this place. The area is vast, filled with nature and historic houses that have been carefully collected from across Denmark (and even a few from Sweden) and rebuilt here. If you're interested in history, this spot offers fascinating insights into how our Danish ancestors lived. It's always intriguing to see how small they were—we often found ourselves bending our heads to avoid hitting the low ceilings as we entered the houses.
The best part is that you can not only explore these houses but also see the furniture from the period in which they were built, offering a real sense of stepping back in time. You could easily spend hours wandering around, but it's well worth it if you enjoy history and nature.
The site is also very accessible by public transportation: just take a train from CPH Central Station, Nørreport Station, or Vesterport Station, and get off at Sorgenfri Station—it's then just a 10-minute walk from there.

We were a little sceptical when we first found it, and thought it was just a pile of old buildings, but read that there were kativites for children in there and as the price is low for getting in we thought it was worth a try as the last in our summer celebrations.
It was clearly an overwhelming experience and far beyond what is expected for many hours of entertainment for children, there are a lot of old buildings you can read about and tell your child and one day big games activite where both the big play child and the smallest can be.
So it is definitely a great place to go if you are in the fresh air and want to jump out of the digital world and just be present! :)

The museum has a lot of old buildings from different times and places in Denmark, and it feels almost like traveling back in time, not least because there were people dressed out like then, who told interesting stories. It was really fun and educational to see how people lived in the past. The area is large and really beautiful. All in all, I can definitely recommend Frilandsmuseet to anyone who wants to have an educational and cozy day.

I had been to this museum several times in previous years. It consisted of many old houses from countryside, and I thought it was quite boring. BUT!
It has been revamped with a themed park with activities, at one end of the museum area. The way from entrance was not so obvious. The one I went to recently had Frøsnapperbyen theme and there were stalls where one can buy tickets to try out games like balloon darts, rubber ducks, open air performances, sæbekassebiler etc. They sell food and drinks too. My kids are 6 and 8 yo and they both enjoyed it very much.
It could be improved by having more signages in place from the entrance, so visitors are not in doubt which way to go.

This was one of the top 2 experiences we had in Copenhagen 🇩🇰
The place is huge, so you can spend hours in there.
Seeing how people used to live, houses, details, the nature… just so many things to do!
I loved it 🥰

The work they have done changing stones and houses from other locations to here is amazing.
There are works with woven branches that are a gem
70 typical houses from more than 200 years ago
It is worth more than many castles
And when you visit it, think that they have had to dismantle and rebuild it here.
There are houses of shoemakers, blacksmiths, ceramists.
Spectacular

Our family has been to quite a few open air museums over the years, but I must say I really enjoyed this one. It's really big our kids enjoyed being pulled around in one of the wooden carts. The museum has so many excellent buildings.
The staff were excellent and friendly. Of our holiday to Denmark this was my favourite attraction. I would quite happy have spent a second visit here.

This is a fascinating collection of buildings, largely farmhouses, with all you expect of an open air museum: low doorways, primitive living quarters, strange tools from the past. There is an area where children can construct their own house with wooden planks, a bit like giant Lego. There were lots of young children there having a great time. The smørrebrød we had at the cafê was really delicious. Make sure you wear good shoes: it was a dry spell when we went, but some of the paths will be muddy in wet weather, as will the grass that you sometimes have to cross to get to some buildings. I would love to give it a Very Good starring, but it really needs proper signposting. We struggled to find where we were on the map. We couldn't even find the exit, Also: more information about some of the mysterious objects in the houses would be great: in Danish and in English please. Busses go every half hour from the station, but you can walk it in 20 minutes (it IS signposted!)

Vorrei sapere come fare a raggiungere The Open Air Museum con i mezzi pubblici dal centro di Copenaghen e anche sapere all'incirca quanto tempo occorrerà per la visita. Grazie.

Are their any tours from downtown Copenhagen to the Outdoor Museum and Brede Works that would deliver us to the entrance.. My husband is partially disabled and cannot walk from the train station and then manage the museums, too.
Thank you.

You Can easily combine local traffic which is disabled friendly, and taxi. You can make it all with local traffic, there are buses going between these attractions, it means local buses frequently from Copenhagen Centrum to Lyngby etc. almost. everything Scandinavia is handicap/ disabled friendly by law, especially when it comes to transportation.

Get a train from Copenhagen station to Sorgenfri station (Sorgenfri station is a station on the Hillerød radial of the S-train network) and walk from there, it's about 11min.

How do I get there using public transportation? I will be in Copenhagen two days, arriving on a cruise ship.
