I've been visiting here with my children for over 10 years and it's a great family trip, which doesn't take tonnes of time and at £5 for our car, was absolutely cracking value. The cafe is quaint and services nice drinks and snacks, the toilets are clean and in good condition and the trust itself is great for all the family. The horses appear to be very well looked after, with lots of info on their background - and a museum too. A must-visit for animal-loving families.

The Horses Trust is one of the most beautiful places to visit, sweeping hills, horses in the paddocks, as you drive in and the stable blocks open up in front of you.
The horses here are so well looked after, and you can get up close to the horses as they look out of their stables.
A lot of the horses here are ex service animals, but there are several that were rescued from Spindles Farm, including the now beautiful Teddy.
There is a lovely tea room there serving good quality food, cakes and teas.
A fantastic place to visit, we will return soon

First visit for us and all I can say is “woah”. I didn’t know what to expect but it was truly beautiful.
The horses were all so lovely and well kept. They were all friendly and loved a good stroke. Such a variety of horses too! Some of their sad tales really did touch me and I found it hard to leave.
The setting is tranquil and the tea rooms lovely with beautiful China cups and teapots.
Well worth a visit and a fantastic charity (and to the posters who have commented on the “parking fee”, let’s remember that it is a charity doing an amazing thing! I thought £5 per car (not person) was great).

We had a lovely afternoon learning all about the rescued horses and giving them the odd pat. At just £5 (per car) entry it's good value. The cafe is nice with a great selection of cakes. Recommend as a short trip for all horse lovers.

I had to write after reading the review by embers78
I visit the horses trust regularly and it is the most wonderful experience
The horses are immaculately cared for with deep clean beds, fresh water and a good supply of hay. Their stories can be very upsetting, but we must be grateful that they are now living in this most caring environment
I have always found the staff helpful and willing to answer questions. There are ponies available for children to brush, with supervision from the staff.
While some horses are said to like their ears rubbed etc. etc., anybody knowing animals will realise that this will always be on the horses own terms, and only when they feel like it!
The surrounding countryside is spectacular, with stunning views and the atmosphere is very calm ,tranquil and restful.
The entry fee of £5 per car seems fair, after all, that could cover quite a few people. The horses trust is a charity and I really don’t think anyone could expect to visit a place of such calibre for any less.
Horses can be large and so a high stable door is necessary. If there is a pony/ donkey resident, the door is much lower. I have never seen an unhappy horse there, and if they don’t come forward for a chat, they probably just don’t feel like it! More often than not, you will find some are asleep, obviously feeling safe, happy and secure.
My views are based on personal experience, and the fact that I have owned horses for over 20 years.

Very good for young children. Over 30 horses and ponies in stables which you can stroke. Stayed just over an hour and good value for money.

I’ve wanted to visit here for quite some time, having owned my own horses in the past and loving the idea of supporting a charity that takes care of our working horses and those in need I thought I’d pay them a visit and make the hours drive up.

I Had already looked at the web site so I knew I was in for a parking charge of £5. Ok no dramas but I realised when I got there that this was in fact the entrance fee and that I could have had 7 people in my car and still only paid £5. Bare in mind this is also only for a 2 hour max visit because that’s all they open for. I was on my own.

When I was ushered in I was told where to park and nothing else, I didn’t know where I could walk, what the idea was etc, any rules or interesting points to note. I just had no clue.

I found the tea room and purchased a bottle of water (I asked for still but got given sparking 3 times) and a brownie which was a bit stale wrapped in tissue because I asked for it to go. I asked the lady there what I could do, she seemed puzzled at my question but eventually told me to walk around and look at horses.

Ok so I started to wander around. Most of the stable doors were so high I couldn’t even see over them (I’m 5’2 so on the short side but stables are not usually in issue); Kids had no chance and many adults were decline to continue to pick kids up and yet the first 4/5 the novelty was clearly wearing off. I noted that most of the horses were hiding in the back of stable and all behaving bored or unhappy or pacing round the stables. I read the signs for most of there horses I visited for some info and some gave quirky comments like loves an ear scratch; but yet you’d try and the horse (or donkey) would shake their head and pull away - suggesting mostly right now I don’t enjoy an ear scratch.

Most of the staff walked around in their own world and even when questioned walked past saying nothing. They weren’t engaging or approachable.

I finally did ask one member of staff and she concluded that the horses are brought in just to be seen and the rest of the time they are out where they would prefer to be.

On the whole the vibe was flat, the staff were un engaging, no one seemed interested in telling us about the horse other than the signs outside the stable. The horses clearly didn’t want to be in and the ones that were in on the whole you couldn’t see over the stable door anyways.

I actually drove an hour to get there. I wouldn’t go again.

Oh I should mention as well that there is a public footpath in the grounds I was told I could walk on it but actually not now because they’re about to close and they don’t recommend it because horses are unpredictable and one of their own is currently off injured with a broken arm having gone out into the field. Firstly - public footpaths are at people’s own risks and I’d hope anyone going in would have some experience with horse behaviour but secondly if the horses are that unpredictable that they cause harm to their keepers surely the footpath should actually be closed?! Or perhaps the keeper should have known better at the time and wasn’t listening to the behaviour of the horse and got themselves into a
Pickle. Either way disappointing.

I think they are a great cause and respect what they do, but they really need to rethink the whole visiting idea and vamp it up a little, get some talks on the go.... get one or two of the horses out and do a meet the horse moment or something where you can see the horse out of the stable and hear a talk about them. you can still have folks keep enough distance for safety. Also Maybe do a talk by the field to comment on the horses in the fields, do a day in the life of and have a staff member talk about their day etc etc etc I could go on.

Great cause but so disappointing, given they rely on donations i expected better couple of hours. Has so much potential.

I visited with my grand daughter and we had a wonderful, if somewhat emotional visit (some very sad horse stories.....). You can walk around at your own pace, stroke the horses and read about every one of them and how they came to be there. There’s also a small interesting museum which tells the story of how the place was founded and has developed over the years.

It was so nice to see how well these horses are cared for in such a clean and beautiful setting. We look forward to visiting again soon.

I took my parents to the horse trust and we thought we have a cup of tea but it was a bit pricey and we got the same size pot for two as a pot for one.
