See beautiful little square with historic buildings. It is in the center of the village, many other sights are in the immediate vicinity.

A gorgeous medieval village has been rebuilt after total destruction in 1976 by a catastrophic earthquake. The church’s reconstruction is particularly poignant. Recommended.

There is a wealth of artistic and architectural details to admire as you walk between the walls of Venzone. It is best to park outside the city walls and walk into the city through the gate. We stayed outside the city walls and walked from there. The historic center is also small, so it can be explored quickly. Attentive observers can see the signs of the various historical events as they walk from the southern gate to the northern one.
Coming from the lower gate - a round arch dating from 1835 - you can see the Marcurele house on the right, the oldest building in the town, built in the 11th century in the Romanesque style with double-lancet bas-relief windows.
Further north are the 14th century church and the 15th century baroque palace. Palazzo degli Scaligeri, dating from the 13th century, and Palazzo Zinutti, a building from the 13th century, enhanced by an elegant balcony with wrought iron railings and a baroque entrance.
Here you can pass by and admire the Romanesque-Gothic cathedral from the 14th century. It is seen as the symbol of the restoration after the earthquake that shook and largely destroyed the city in May and September 1976. The cathedral was consecrated in 1338 by Patriarch Bertrand. Its T-shaped floor plan consists of a nave and a wide transept with three apsidal high altars and two towers. The organ inside the cathedral dates back to 1792 and is the work of the organ builder G. Callido.
In the front church square of the cathedral is the Chapel of St. Michael from the 13th century. It is now the seat of the permanent museum of the mummies of Venzone.
The discovery of the nearly forty mummies exhumed from the tombs inside and outside the cathedral dates back to 1647. That was the year in which the first mummy, known today as the hunchback, was brought to light. The natural mummification of the bodies on display was caused by the particular environmental conditions that occurred in some of the tombs, in which Hypha bombicina Pers developed, a mold that has the property of drying out the tissues and thus preventing decomposition.
Resuming the route towards the old town, you come across the Calderari house (14th century) with its pleasant courtyard and then you reach Piazza del Comune, where the Town Hall stands. It was built in the 15th century in Gothic style and rebuilt in the 16th century. The external facades are decorated with the coats of arms of the oldest noble families of Venzone and are embellished with mullioned windows in the Flamboyant style.
In the square there is also Palazzo Radiussi, the residence of a noble family, characterized by its three-mullioned windows in the Gothic-Venetian style of the 15th century and by a 17th century entrance gate.
Continuing north, you will find Palazzo Orgnani Martina, an 18th century noble building and currently the seat of the most important museums and temporary exhibitions in Venzone. On the opposite side of Via Mistruzzi you can admire the former Palazzo Radiussi, dating from the 15th century, embellished by a Renaissance balcony and a mullioned window in the Flamboyant style.
Continuing towards the north gate, you can turn into a side street that runs along the city walls to Palazzo Pozzo, a noble building from the 17th century. A little further on is the former Augustinian monastery from the 15th century, with a 17th century portico and loggia. Continuing along Via Alberton del Colle, you come to the remains of the 14th century church of St. John the Baptist, whose ruins still bear witness to the terrible earthquake of 1976, which spared only the main façade. The church gate has the architectural features of the Gothic style with capitals decorated with figures and flowers.
Walking across the old town, you come to the city gate Porta S. Genesio, a 14th century defensive tower that is integrated into the edge of the inner walls and is the only gate that has been completely rebuilt.
The town of Venzone is surrounded by a wide moat and an interesting double wall dating back to the 13th century: the first wall forms an earthen rampart on which the second wall is built, in which rectangular towers are inserted, while a polygonal tower rises in the south-west corner.
The north-west corner is also of particular interest, rising up on a hill where there are two towers that dominated the main thoroughfare and communication route of the time.

A beautiful medieval village with a characteristic town hall, a beautiful cathedral. A village with small streets to walk through and discover while walking. You will find many views to take photographs.

The village is faithful to its history and traditions, despite being razed to the ground by the 1976 earthquake.
I recommend a visit to the Terrae Motus museum: a touching experience for those who don't want to forget

Paese molto carino e ricostruito benissimo. Tuttavia sarebbe opportuna l’istituzione di un’isola pedonale all’interno delle mura. Il passaggio continuo di auto e moto non rende piacevole la visita del paese.

Paese bello, pulito e gente cordiale.
