Manas was the leader who brought all the Kyrygz tribes together.His deeds were written in a poem in the 18th century which has become the national identity of the Kyrygz people. The original Kyrygz people came from the Abakan region of Siberia, but when this area was attacked by the Mongols in the 13th Century, they drifted south to what is Kyrygzstan today. The tribes were scattered and not unified, and Manas is said to have made the nation one again.
The Manas statue is the most common seen in Kyrygzstan, and you will be sure to see him many times on your travels around the country. Unfortunately, the statue is at a round-a-bout on the way to the airport, so it will be difficult to stop for photos. In front of the Manas statue is a snow leopard sculpture.
