The ambience of this place is amazing. It is a super place to stay and work. Staff are friendly and really helpful. The lounge has a stock of jigsaws and boardgames to help you unwind and no televisions anywhere! The village has a lovely community post office and foodstore and there is a huge estate park nearby for country walks. There is also a cafe and a great pub just a minute or two away.
I have knocked off one star because I stayed with a large group, some of whom were disturbed by the church clock chiming in the night. I think that depends on which side of the building your bedroom is. I slept like a log all three nights. Also the breakfast is continental with limited choice especially if like me you have a food allergy. No option for a cooked breakfast although this is stated on the website.

Gladstone library has been a place my younger sister has wanted to see for a while. On our way back from holidaying in Wales we called in. We had brought our ID as detailed on their website so we could enroll as day readers. The lovely lady on reception, Nicola, greeted us warmly and advised what we needed to do. James then enrolled us as readers so we could have a look round. Both James and Nicola were friendly and welcoming...could not have been nicer. We had a look around and a wander - all the time bearing in mind the people who were using the library at the time.
Afterwards we went for a drink and a cake. Now, my sister is an expert on cakes, trust me. The bara brith flapjack was one of best cakes she's ever had - and I have to agree. Fabulous. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit and thank for you letting us look around.

The title of this review is a David Baldacci quote which Gladstone's Library used on social media in the week after I stayed, and which I found ironic. I regret to say this, but my most recent stay at Gladstone's Library was not the relaxing and productive experience it's been in the past.
I booked two midweek nights intending to spend a full day in the Annex part of the Library browsing the collection. This was closed off - no notification on the website, social media or from staff when I booked in - to allow a marquee to be put up in the garden for a wedding at the coming weekend. No staff seemed to know about this until it happened, and all assured me it would not last all day, which it did. Some responded to my enquiries by ordering me around like drill sergeants or farmer throwing trespassers off land. I was invited when I raised these problems to put them in writing, but all have been dismissed.
I think that the Library has only recently started to mix weddings with its established functions, but it needs to be much more pro-active about warning residents of the effects of this. My visit was pretty much wasted and my day unpleasant - not something I'd ever have said before about the Library. Check what's available very carefully before booking.

We appreciate your frustration at not being able to access one part of the book collections. Unfortunately your stay, booked at relatively short notice, fell on an unexpectedly busy day and Library staff had to adapt to changing conditions. We apologised for the inconvenience at the time and in later correspondence.
We would like to address some inaccuracies in your review, please.
We want to make it clear that the Library does not routinely host weddings - this was a one-off event held with special dispensation. Therefore, there were unanticipated aspects to the set up.
We did respond to several messages from you, and a senior staff member discussed your concerns over the phone in detail. As an organisation, we do our absolute best to accommodate everybody and to address any complaints made efficiently and politely. Thank you.

Mostly I enjoyed my stay and found it really useful for focusing on some writing I needed to do. The room was fine and comfy. Nice to be in such an authentic library setting. Food okay and staff friendly. For the life of me cannot understand why the church bells go off all through the night, no one seems to mention this, two nights of very bad sleep unfortunately.

We visited the library yesterday for afternoon tea it was very enjoyable the cakes were delicious & the service was amazing but the sandwiches were a little bit disappointing we were there last February for my 49th birthday & the sandwiches then were really delicious

We stayed for a couple of nights in February and it was amazing. The library is impressive but being able to stay on site is such an incredible experience. My wife is of a literary bent, being a book reviewer. So she spent the days in the library while I explored the Wirrell with a camera.
There was a lovely chatty atmosphere in the lounge in the evening with other literary minded researchers and authors.
Bear in mind that eating options are limited on site.... the cafe and brasserie for dinner. But options are limited and don't often change. And then in the village there are only a couple of pubs offering food... so you'll need either to be ready to have a limited range of option or travel further afield.

What a privilege to stay here. An amazing building, great staff… enthusiastic, helpful, happy. Rooms aren’t fancy but that’s not what the library is about, they are very clean and everything works. We would definitely stay here again.

Beautiful building in pure collegiate gothic. It stands behind a magnificent statue to the Victorian statesman . Next door is a magnificent arts and crafts sepulchre to Gladstone and his wife . Apparently they rest in Westminster abbey .
Well worth visiting and the cafe is very good value and well worth the treat.

Wonderful atmospheric building, comfortable warm rooms, roaring fire in the the lounge. Staff were very friendly and nothing too much trouble

Came to stay after a recommendation.
Never again , very overpriced and dirty . Service in the restaurant was substandard and the menu took me back to my school days ( not in a good way ) overall this place is best avoided.
