Visited for the Heritage Open Day and was absolute delighted. We have walked round the site before and loved it, but to get a guided tour added a whole new level of enjoyment. It is such a fascinating site.

I am delighted to hear that you enjoyed your Heritage Open Day guided tour of Magpie Mine.
We hold this special day every September - information goes out on the Peak District Mining Museum website each year.

Interesting place but the site overrun with cows. If you're anxious around these unpredictable animals and have a dog (even on lead) then it's a non starter. Took one look and walked away. Small area covered by historical remains and a short track from road so really needs to be fenced off. Shame.

I am sorry that your visit was spoilt by the cattle on the site.
Due to the rare ecology (Caliminarian grassland) we are required to have cattle graze the land to keep the vegetation down and fertilise the soil. This area has never been used for crops and therefore has not been ploughed or had artificial fertilisers added.
Goats eat everything, sheep graze too close so the only option is to have cattle on the site for a short period each year.
If you visit the site from Autumn through to early Spring then it is unlikely that there will be cattle on site.

What a treat, small quiet location but what a find and lovely part of industrial heritage. And all surroundwd by wildflowers and skylarks.
There were a couple of areas where signage could have been improved but really liked the low key experience so not much of an issue.

Thank you for leaving a review! The wild flowers at Magpie have been particularly good this year.

We were dodging showers on our visit to the Peak District, but were lucky with lovely sunshine and very few other visitors when we rocked up here. You can park in the small lay-by, and walk along a field track to the disused mine. There is a very helpful information board at the base of the chimney stack; I was particularly taken with the detail about calaminarian ( ie heavy metal tolerant) mountain pansies growing there! The site gives ample opportunity for atmospheric photographs. Strongly recommended!

We are pleased that the sun shone on you at Magpie Mine. In the next few weeks the wild flowers should be at their best with leadwort, mountain pansies, cowslips and orchids.

Staying in Buxton for a holiday and came across Magpie Mine on Google maps when looking for local sites to visit and what a gem it turned out to be. Even more interesting thanks to the notice boards read that John Taylor the engineer was involved. He also engineered the Tacistock canal in Devon near to where we live. Spent an hour or so looking over the well cared for site and found it well worth the visit. Amazingly it's free to visit, would have a gift shop and entrance charge if it was in Cornwall. 😄😄

We almost found this gem by mistake. Its in a beautiful position. Layby parking and a flat access track.
Information boards most useful.
Sunshine would have made it great for a photographer with the sky, buildings and shadows.

Excellent venue for photography and historical experience. Easy to locate, beautiful scenery. Watch out for the cattle they sneak up.

I am pleased to hear you enjoyed your visit to the mine. The cattle are very nosy and do like to see what people are doing. We have them on the site at times to graze as they are the best way to ensure the growth of our rare wild flowers.

We were surprised that so much still remains of this important lead mine - really interesting winding gear, buildings, horizontal flue (rare) and tall chimney, and the whole of the horse gin. Easy to get to, though a hike up the track. Recommended!

It sounds like you enjoyed your visit and have been to similar sites. The horse gin is a replica (about 40 years old) but is built on the site of an original one. You may also enjoy a visit to the Peak District Mining Museum in Matlock Bath which is owned by the same Society who manage the Magpie site.

A visit to Magpie Mine is good any time of the year but a visit in the bleakness of Winter is even better. You then get the place to yourself, usually, and also you get a feel for what life must have been like when it was in operation.
There are so few mines left now and this one is fairly intact and it is interesting to get a feel for what my great great grandparents would have experienced when working down the mines.
We came in the late afternoon for the sunset and brought a flask with us (it was a god send once the sun dipped behind the hills) and sat watching the beautiful sights.
If you are driving here then there is a pitted layby by the entrance but best of all would be to park up in Sheldon and walk across the field at the back of the pub to the mine. Then you can return the same way and enjoy a nice pint in The Cock and Pullet which has changed so little over the years that the men that used to work the mine would recognise it instantly.

We are delighted to hear how much you enjoyed your visit to Magpie Mine. In Winter I always think of the miners exiting the mine wet and cold into a howling wind and snow. The shelter of the boiler house must have been very welcome. The Cock and Pullet also serve food to enjoy with your pint.

Dogs are allowed on the site so long as they are kept on a short lead. We do have cattle roaming the site so please be aware of where they are.
