Motorway pass, good for quick stop

It’s the pass between Kochkor and Naryn regions. Road is great. Gets challenging and slippery in winter. On the top couple on point for quick stop and taking photos.

We traveled to Dolon Pass during our drive around the ‘stans last summer and it was not what we had envisioned at all. Not really very steep or difficult to get to, our driver Timur got us there in good time, there is a decent motorway running through there, a few paces with stores and many vehicles passing along. If you aren’t used to the altitude you may get a bit lightheaded for a minute but it is only about 400-500m difference. Some beautiful landscapes and badlands to see and explore if you desire along the way. Not a must see in Kyrgyzstan but still a nice area.

Stop by and taste kymyz, kurut in summer yurts

Dolon Pass is a picturesque place with high mountains around, green grass and livestock running around. In summer you'll see a lot of yurts on the way, I recommend stopping by and tasting kymyz, kurut and other local beverages. My suggestion is to stop by yurts where you'll see horses nearby.

Schöne Strecke, aber kein echter Pass

Schlchte Strasse? Mitnichten! Aber unter einem Pass stelle ich mir vor, dass die Wegführung viele 100 Meter hoch mit mehreren markanten Kurven eine Kette quert. Hier handelt es sich jedoch um einen sanften Anstieg vom Talgrund bei 2600 m ü.M. auf der Nordseite hinauf auf den Pass bis knapp über 3000 m ü.M. und dann wieder hinunter auf ähnliches Niveau im Süden, wobei man erneut eine Talstrecke bzw. Schlucht zurückgelegt hat. Egal, die Umgebung ist attraktiv und wird von markanten Erosionsformen vom Typ „badland“ in lockerem bis festem Sedimentgestein geprägt. Das ist durchaus fotogen, vor allem gegen Abend. Erwähnenswert sind weiter zwei Stellen mit Restaurants bzw. Qurut- und Kumys-Läden in periodisch genutzten Bauwagen-Siedlungen entlang der A365 für Fahrer, die die Strecke Naryn-Bishkek benutzen und sich hier für zuhause eindecken (findet man auf den großen Überlandstrecken in Kirgistan des öfteren). Schließlich befinden sich zwei sehenswerte, archaisch wirkende Friedhöfe mit vielen Lehmgräbern auf der Südseite, die zumindest für Touristen aus westlichen Ländern fremdartige Motive bieten. – Doch, es ist eine sehenswerte Strecke, die man in Ruhe genießen sollte, zumal es sich um eine gute Strasse handelt.

An alpine pass going to Naryn.

The Dolon pass is at 3030 m. It's popular to go form Issyk-Kul Lake to Naryn by this route. It's very steep and can be hard to find your way. The way will take you to Naryn.
