Qassiarsuk is a place of historic significance, where Viking, Eric the Red, established the settlement he called Brattahlid over 1000 years ago (his son Lief Ericsson went on to 'discover' N America). There's little to be seen now of the original settlement, but in the year 2000 two buildings were reconstructed, made from wood and sods, which give a feel, albeit a bit sanitised, of how people lived at that time - Eric the Red's communal longhouse and the church built by his Christian wife, Tjodhildes (incidentally, the picture at the head of this review is NOT Tjodhildes' church, but the longhouse). But just as interesting is the modern settlement of Qassiarsuk, just 90 people, established in 1924 as a sheep farming community, almost unique in Greenland. It's a quiet peaceful place, worth visiting just for its stunning setting on Eriksfjord (but I guess it's hard in the winter). And don't forget to visit the beautiful little Lutheran church built in 1936 and the warming welcoming cafe in the village. Altogether a great combination of history and modern-day Greenlandic life.

Just below the statue of Erik the red, and not far from the pier, about 10 -15 minutes walk, there are ruins of the ancient Viking settlement. This reconstructed small church is made of wood and turf. There is also an old Inuit hut just beside this church, and what remains of a church plan above this one.

I enjoyed this reconstruction of 1000 year old ruins, which easily let me imagine what life was like so long ago. Bring along a copy of the Vinland Saga, which describes the Viking settlement of Greenland and points west, and read it while you're here to help picture the stories more vividly. The tour guide, David, is very knowledgeable and will be glad to fill you in with "color commentary" that helps to make sense of everything that you see.

When you get off the boat the ruins are about a 20 minute walk from the harbor. Very small town and the people I talked with were very friendly. I was alone here and even I didn't have any trouble finding ruins because of the great signage. The redone church was lovely and I had a tour by a wonderful young man, who was very knowledgable. There were also Inuit ruins here, and farms. I had about two hours to explore, and I wish I had more time to explore the hillsides.
