I had an amazing walk on Egmont/Taranaki. However, I wanted to prepare others for the walk of misery which is 'the enchanted walk' it should be re-named the 'Steps of Everest' they just go on and on and on. The problem with a walk that consists of nothing but steps is that you don't have the opportunity to enjoy the surroundings because you spend the whole time concentrating on not breaking an ankle. I imagine it's called the 'enchanted walk' to encourage 'fantasists' like me to actually do the walk. It was horrible!!!! I decided to do a loop from the plateau - enchanted walk, swing bridge, Dawson falls, and back to the plateau. Someone else was clearly doing this walk in the opposite direction. When I passed him for the 2nd time I asked 'did you just come up that enchanted walk? Cos I went down it and it was fun*king horrible;' he said he had and admitted that he wanted to cry.... The swing bridge, the falls the mountain is 'out of this world gorgeous' but avoid the enchanted because it is the worst walk ever!!!! The 9 mins walk from the plateau to view point is great... Just don't go any further!!!!

I climbed to Syme Hut at Fanthams Peak.
It’s tough going.
It starts off with 3 kilometres of steps.
Then it gets hard. It’s very steep and the scree is very loose. But keep pushing and eventually you’ll make it.
The views are spectacular.

It was a cloudy day, but it was also our only day in the area, so we still decided to do the walk up to the Pouakai Tarn. The walk itself is beautiful, even on a cloudy day. You start off in a ferny rainforest on the Mangorei Track, with a well constructed path made up of lots of steps- see pics.
We finished up in the alpine areas in the clouds, where it was a lot cooler, and a totally different feel.
It took about 2.5 hours at a decent speed to get up to the tarn, and an hour and a half to come back down, with plenty of picture stops.
I can't show any pics with a view, as there was no view, but it was still a good experience.

Cruise NZ Tours offer a great shuttle service to and from the mountain from New Plymouth. Was able to adjust his time to suit our requirements. So thanks Ian for your great service

We booked the 'Around Mt Taranaki Tour', a 3 hour scenic tour, with Taranaki Driven NZ. A well organised, in terms of pick-up and return to our accommodation, private tour with guide Mike, who talks passionately about Mount Taranaki and surroundings. Highly recommended!

Hardest thing I’ve done but so worth it! Not too busy on the track! Recommend you start early, before sunrise. The sense of achievement was worth it, but do not underestimate this hike/climb! It is a tough one. Choose your safe pace and stick to it!

A great spot to drive to with amazing views. We were fortunate enough to be there after a snowfall on a clear day. It’s very popular and as conditions can change quickly, be prepared. We just had a normal car & had no issues driving up or parking in the snow. It’s a well maintained road. The cafe is a great spot to stop to enjoy lunch or a hot chocolate & toilets are located here.

From certain angles this looks very reminiscent of Mt Fuji in Japan albeit a lot shorter. Nevertheless this is an impressive mountain and can be hiked up to the summit but it is still over 2000 metres and mountain terrain so requires proper equipment and training. Sadly this mountain is also renown for having clouds so you will be lucky to see it with clear blue skies. There are many walking trails and huts on the mountain. There are two information centres where you can access maps and touring info.

What is a good place to stay the night prior as I’m planning on leaving for a solo hike around 4am. The Tahurangi lodge appears to be booked.
Thanks for any advice on this!
Cheers
