We are members with English Heritage which is how we found this location but appears to be free to enter.

This is one of the oldest castle's we've been to see and you can really get a sense of scale of the motte and bailey, you can climb to the top of where the defensive part would be and it's a decent view.

Some interesting information available and we spoke to a lovely lady volunteer who spoke to us a bit more about the history.

The castle itself are ruins rather than preserved which is representative by free entry.

You can walk both around the remains or on the ring of the former rampart. However to get up to the rampart and motte you do need to climb steps so are not accessible to all.

The sun was shining during my visit and there wasn’t many people around which made the experience even better.

It should not be called a castle as it’s only broken walls and fragments left … certainly not a destination for a day out .. maybe 15 minutes to walk arround what’s left of crumbling walls.

Lovely visit. It’s an easy circuit to head around the outside ruins of the old castle.
Plenty of space for little people to run around and stretch their legs.
Not lots to see… it is a ruin, but for someone who’s country has a modern history 230 years old, it’s definitely of interest.
Wear good walking shoes.

On a nice day it’s a pleasant walk around the walls and a peaceful retreat. There’s a small amount of signage around explaining the history but otherwise climb the stairs to the top of the mound and enjoy the view! No doubt due to the pandemic, the cottage was shut when I visited and there’s no other facilities, but that helps to keep it authentic and reminds you of the history more. Being so conveniently located right outside the train station means it’d be a shame not to pay a visit and the free entrance is brilliant.

Free to enter and walk around the castle walls and ramparts. Interesting interpretation boards with the history of the castle and its varied occupants. Some seats within the central grassed area make this a good stopping off point and an easy introduction to history for young minds.

Berkhamsted Castle was once part of strategic triangulation of medieval fortresses with the Tower of London and Windsor Castle. It fell into obsolescence in the 16th Century when the locals dismantled it to make homes for themselves. Recycling and socialism in action. The skeleton of the Norman Motte and Bailey and the later stone castle with its association with Chaucer and the Black Prince remain. History buffs and theirtchildren should have a nice time.

This is a castle ruin but well worth taking the time to visit. It is located close to the railway station so easy to get to. Real sense of being “in touch” with history. Well worth a visit.

Located next to the train station
Great for a picnic, walk around and/ or for children to run about and play.
There could be a bit more information about the castle available to add interest/ explain context.
Be warned - if driving, parking nearby can be difficult (no on site parking) and there are no toilets or facilities on site!
