Not much of a view ~ NOT A PLACE TO ENJOY TRANQUILITY - more like a family oriented or teens party campground ~ Noisy Campground from toddlers to “supposing” growing up adults (loud talkers and music players) ~ You can fill up fresh water on arrival and dump Black & Grey tanks on departure ~ Site 162 is near a small beach, populated with large pine trees - not much room for 25’RV and not much play for levelling - Not much of a of a lake view either ~ Will definitely not repeat.

Having never been camping this far north, I wasn't sure what to expect and was pleasantly surprised with this park.
We arrived at night, so finding our site and setting up in the dark was difficult. Butttt, waking up to the true beauty of our site (171, right near the water) was a treat. The campsites are level and surrounded by trees, giving you lots of options for tent location, hammock, etc. However, I would say the vast majority of campers were in trailers, likely due to the size of these sites (which usually means more kids in the park).
The "outhouses" were flushable toilets and were actually cleaner than the comfort station (one thing to note for this particular campsite was you could hear the toilets flushing at night).
Shout out to Ontario Parks staff: Our site was missing its table and they were able to hunt it down and deliver it back to us fairly quickly. Also, we had to leave a day early and were prepared to eat the cost of the additional night, but if you check out prior to noon, you will receive a partial refund, which was a nice surprise.
I would definitely return to this park.
Tip for swimmers: There is a nice area to wade into the lake for a swim near the 168-171 sites.

We have typically found Ontario PP’s to be outstanding, Samuel de Ch lowers the bar. We had reservations for site 32 that was supposed to accommodate a large rv. The road in was so incredibly rough it took us 20 minutes to travel 1.5 km pulling a 5th wheel. The site was basically a steep hillside with a level area barely big enough for a small tent. The campground was packed with 20 something partyers many with 3 or 4 cars per site. We canceled and left. Never got a chance to see the natural beauty for which the park is known. This place needs a redo……

Before coming here I read the reviews of others and it is clear that some have a fond spot in their heart for this park. We didn’t camp, so i cant speak to that experience. All the employees were super friendly. That said, the infrastructure (roads) are crumbling. It is clear that there are not many hikers as large portions of the history loop and nature loop are being slowly taken back by nature. The viewpoints are getting overgrown, and the views from the two trails are not very spectacular. It took us about 3.5 hours to go down the history trail to the gulch and then come back up the nature loop. The history trail was steep, mostly downhill. The nature trail led us to the same junction at the end but going uphill was much gentler. See attached photos for what you can expect it see. It was a bog contrast with Parc National D’Opemican that we were at yesterday- stunning scenery, well groomed trails, signs of wildlife- all for the same entry fee.

Un arrêt sur la route. Où est l'eau chaude pour les douches ? Sentier intéressant mais attention après une pluie. Ville pas trop loin.

Had a great time at the park!
A beautiful vision of the past!
Here is my report on the good and the bad.
I found the museum to be exceptional and engaging. Loved the canoe and the pelts. I only wish I had more time to read and enjoy the exhibits. There is so much history to absorb here that it’s worth a second visit.
Hiking: Pretty darn good but many of the trails are too difficult for smaller children. The terrain is very rough but if you can make it through you will be treated to some pleasant views of the surrounding forest, mountains and Mattawa river.
Kids will love the Wabashkiki Trail. Adults will love the Brûlé system. Trail maintenance is great.
Beach: Could use some TLC. It’s tiny and ugly and would benefit from being raked. There is no room for chairs or an umbrella. The day use beach on the other side of the lake is way more attractive, it has plenty of room and even picnic tables and a large field for games and picnics.
Staff: Poorly trained not very knowledgable and nearly useless when it came to providing help or information.
Store: Stock was minimal. T-shirt designs suck and lack creativity. I wish they would capitalized on the history of the area more.
But it wasn’t all bad. I did buy a few things and I’m so pleased I found a mini astrolabe and a pin of the Northwest Company!! That itself was worth the drive. I enjoy coming to these parks for the historical aspects so this was a good find. Otherwise they had a decent amount of camping supplies and snacks.
Fishing: Pretty decent but lots of pike so make sure you have wire leaders. I lost 10 of my good lures just because the pike kept shredding my line.
Flush privies!! Yes you read that right. Flush privies are scattered around the campground which is quite a luxury!
Women’s comfort stations were not clean. Men’s were fine.
Watch out for tubers who enjoy going down the rapids. It seems they are constantly walking along the side of the road, preparing to do a river run, which is full of jagged sharp razor rocks. Some kids are as little as 3 years old doing this. This is a Darwin award waiting to happen.
Downtown Mattawa is a short drive away if you need anything. If you forgot anything major you can always go into North Bay.
Will return!

We checked in and was given our paperwork for our site. Set up went to plug in and no service. Neighbor advised us there had been no hydro available the last two years. We went back to gate and advised we had no hydro !! They then said ya sorry
That’s it. It would have been nice to have known before as we had a dead battery and needed the power.

A lifetime of memories to be made here. Beach is fabulous and spacious. Camped here as a child and now took my own kids - was not dissatisfied. A must on your camping checklist.

the most beautiful camping ever, living in mattawa did not realize what we were missing. did not do the rapids in innertube but heard it was rough lol. but overall it was great. we will camp again

Best thing about this park is tubing on the river! It is about a 20 minute walk back after going down the rapids. The rapids are very easy to navigate here and we would suggest water shoes. We went with 7 others and had a fantastic time. The comfort stations are also always clean. We will be back multiple times this summer!

It’s a 3 hour drive from my place and had no issues or whatsoever driving from my house all the way to camp site. Drove to downtown Mattawa and people are super nice.

It was about 35 dollars for four hours. It’s a bit pricey compared to rentals in Algonquin but in my opinion it was worth it just to explore the lakes.

You are not supposed to bring firewood into parks. They have firewood for sale. It is to stop the spread of disease/bugs in wood.
