On a day trip through Norfolk County, our first stop was to visit the Delhi Tobacco Museum & Heritage Centre.

This small museum tells stories of agriculture and heritage that helped turn Delhi from a dustbowl into an agricultural powerhouse.

The building is a model of a typical tobacco pack barn and houses a large agricultural collection, which includes exhibits on tobacco, ginseng, and alternative agriculture grown in Norfolk County.

The museum grounds back onto a lovely park and gardens, with a winding river and a footbridge over the falls.

Delhi may be the town that tobacco built, but most of the area farms have pivoted from tobacco to growing crops like ginseng and lavender, as well as wineries, which has helped make Norfolk County a tourism destination.

This museum is small but has a lot of local history. The curator is also an artist and very knowledgeable of the area, the immigrant history that helped to 'cultivate' the area, and the now maligned crop that helped build the area.

Admissission is by donation. Parking is ample,

There is a small gift shop which includes books on the history, birdhouses, and heritage gifts.

If you're curious about the tobacco industry and how it was grown and processed, or about the history of the area, this is a great place to go to. Very informative, also had a tiny gift shop. I thought it was weird they were closed on Saturdays, which seems to be when most people would go, but were able to go on the Sunday on our way back home

What a wonderful educational place this is! I expected to be in the museum for only half an hour, tops, but I got so involved with reading most of the information that accompanied the pictures, machinery, tools, etc., that I was there for over an hour. I also got to see the interior of the green and red barn outside the museum, where tobacco leaves were processed and stored.

A lot of the collections displayed on the two floors, which include newspaper articles about Delhi, the industry, famous local people, etc., are well preserved.

When in Delhi or neighbouring towns, be sure to drop by this museum to learn about the local culture.

This is a great little museum with colourful, engaging exhibits so you can learning about the unique farming of this area. A charming storefront display greets you upon entry. There is also an impressive metal sculpture depicting Belgian immigrants coming to the New World. Lots of neat displays about ginseng, tobacco and other crops. Friendly staff.

The building is deceiving, nothing special on the outside but the inside revealed a lot about the area. A group visiting from Belgium, a lot of them farmers, were interested in visiting the museum and enjoyed the museum. For some of the local people, it was their first time there as well. Who knew there used to be cigarette trading cards in different themes. The displays on tobacco and other crops was interesting as well as the heritage displays. It was interesting to see the profiles of local residents and their stories.

My second visit in this interesting museum. In addition to watching the documentary about tobacco picking, I spent more time studying the exhibits dedicated to the ethnic groups that lived and worked in the area—and who still live in Delhi, as I saw a Belgian, German, Hungarian and Polish clubs in town. I also spotted an old map of Long Point (from the period it was an island, after a big storm in 1833 washed a cut across the base of the Point until 1906, when it was filled in by storms). The museum had information not only on tobacco, but also on the area’s new crop, ginseng, which has been becoming more and more popular.

Incidentally, a few days ago I spoke about my trip to Delhi to one of my acquaintances, who is of Belgian origin. He told me that in the late 1970s he worked on a tobacco farm owned by Belgians farmers. He agreed that indeed, it was a very demanding, yet well-paying job.

This is a great place to visit to see how the farming community thrived and prospered in the past. There are all sorts of equipment on display from decades ago. Also you can sit and watch a short film on how this equipment was used and how hard people worked in days gone by. There's also a small souvenir shop and goodies you can purchase. It is a very educational way to spent time with your family.

At the beginning of our tour, we watched a 30 min documentary from 1958 about picking tobacco—indeed, it was a back-breaking work! The museum had plenty of exhibits not only on tobacco growing, but also on other crops cultivated in the area. In addition, there are small exhibits dedicated to the ethnic groups that settled in the area.
