Not our first choice of tour operator but the others were fully booked. And I am really glad they were too. This trip was a few thousand dollars cheaper and apart from a free parka, I couldn't really see any reason for it. We had ten people on our Tundra Buggy (max 18 for company) while the more expensive tours were packed like sardines into the Tundra Buggy's. And we all ate in the same place.
Our guide, Pat, was magnificent. There is nothing this man doesn't know about Churchill and the reason for our visit, the Polar Bears. He is a great asset to the company.
We saw bears every day for the five days we were there. One of our group was counting and said we saw over a hundred. This trip is worth every cent.

My husband and I just returned from a trip with Churchill Nature Tours, and like the other reviewers, we give it five stars. We went on the 6-day, 5-night Polar Bear Adventures Ultimate Tour, which included a helicopter ride during which we saw approximately 30 polar bears, 3 full days on the tundra, and a visit to the Eskimo Museum in Churchill. Steve, our guide, was wonderful--very knowledgeable, fun to be with, and helpful. There were only 8 of us on the tour, which allowed us plenty of room on the tundra vehicle to move around and take photographs--a huge contrast to other groups we saw who were crowded two-to-a-seat on their vehicles. It was a thrill to see polar bears up close (two came right up to our vehicle!), as well as red fox, ptarmigans, moose, and arctic hare. Our accommodations at the Aurora Inn were very comfortable, with two-story units that had bedroom lofts upstairs. The meals at Gypsy's, the family-run restaurant in Churchill, were delicious, with baked goods made daily on-site. The staff at Gypsy's was accommodating to vegetarian members of our group. Because of overcast weather, we were not able to see the northern lights, but it will be reason to return again!

I wish that this company was listed under Churchill, rather than Erickson, so that more people would know about it.

My husband and I enjoyed more than five visits to Churchill to see the Polar Bears. A favorite trip for both of us who love wildlife. Very organized experience, great tour guides, it will fulfill all your expectations and add a wonderful experience to your bucket list. Other companies offer this experience but not as well done as Churchill Nature Tours. We have compared and are very satisfied with this company and what they offer to their customers. You won't be disappointed in this tour, just remember it is wildlife and you can't make them appear if the timing is wrong. We have always been fortunate to observe polar bears sometimes more than you can count and sometimes only a few.

This was an amazing trip. The tour began with a very nice welcome dinner with the company owner Thureys at a hotel in Winnipeg (another review) the food was very good and informative. Bright and early the next morning we took a plane to Churchill. That's when our adventure began with Pat our guide for the rest of the trip. Pat was great he shared about the town, bear adventures and history of the natives. We took a helicopter ride for an hour which gave everyone an understanding of the land. After we had our first lunch at Gypsys a funky local restaurant that had a huge variety of choices - unfortunately everything was really good!! We had all our meals here and we were all very, very pleased with this choice. We had a small group of 6 which was amazing because we had a Tundra Rover of our own for 2 days of polar bear watching which gave us all the picture opportunities we wanted without crawling over someone to see out the window! Best advice to future travelers do not go in large groups of more than 12-14. You will take this amazing trip and miss out on great photo opportunities. I saw vehicles packed and the people looked miserable - this is no way to travel!.
Churchill Nature Tours did an amazing job you won't be disappointed with this company. I am looking at returning for the Beluga whale season because I know this company will provide another trip of a lifetime!

The cost was so much cheaper than the others I wondered if it would be ok. It was great, you eat and sleep and go out in the buggy's with people that pay double what we did. They were well organized, the very best part of the tour was our guide, Pat. He was a forest ranger for 35 years in the artic. He knew how to get the bears to come to us, he knew so much about bears!

We did a polar bear tour with Churchill nature Tours in Oct 2014. It's a 5-day tour that begins in Winnipeg at the Hilton airport hotel, flies up to Churchill, Manitoba the next day and includes two full days out on the tundra, bothering polar bears. Organisation was excellent, we were joined for dinner at the Hilton by Thuraya and one other guest, and met the other 6 members of the tour at the airport next day. Flew up to Churchill, were met by our guide Steve and did a town orientation tour that included the Polar Bear Holding Facility and the local museum. That afternoon (when the cloud kindly lifted) we did a helicopter tour over the tundra for an hour and saw 14 bears !!!! :-) and moose. Other points of interest were a fort, the port, and a crashed aeroplane and a grounded ship (it's tough up there!)
The following 2 days were spent in Polar Rovers out on the tundra. These are huge vehicles, plenty of room as only our group of 9 used one vehicle, with let-down windows and a viewing deck on the back for photographing bears. Very warm and comfortable (until the windows were opened!) with hot drinks and lunch of soup, sandwiches and dessert. And did we see bears! At one point, we had 8 in sight at one time. They'll come right up to the vehicle and peek in the window (great photos!) and walk under the mesh-floored viewing deck. Bears right under your feet! Some of our group chose to do a dog-sled ride on the second day, but we stayed with the bears and saw lots more. Accommodation was self-contained and comfortable, but we ate always at Gypsy's cafe, which had excellent food. We were there for Halloween, so the local bear-watch was out in force protecting the kids. (Necessary, because the bears do come, on occasion, right into town.) Every kid who came into Gypsy's got candy, and the staff dressed up in costumes. (We were warned, if we wanted to dress up, to avoid wearing a seal costume ...) Our last morning was spent taking photos and souvenir shopping, then we flew back to Winnipeg, and were met by Thuraya and had a final dinner at the hotel. We'd thoroughly recommend this tour, the organisation was spot-on, Steve was an excellent guide and full of information, and we had heaps of room on the Polar Rover for viewing and taking pictures. (Some tours pack their vehicles with people.) We've wanted to see the polar bears for years, and are so glad we did!

We debated about doing the Nature 1st Tour because of the cost. It was $165+ tax and was from 9AM-4PM. They pick you up at your lodge. We were fortunate to have a very nice day. Even though our trip back to Churchill this time was the beluga snorkeling and kayaking, we were hoping to see some bears...........and did we ever! Got wonderful pictures and videos. Paul was our guide. I believe this is their company. I worked a lot with his wife, via email, the couple months before we went to Churchill. She was very helpful. If you want to do the full-day tour you have to have 3 people....and we did. You are never guaranteed about seeing the bears so you're taking a chance. If we hadn't seen any bears, then I wouldn't have thought it was worth the money. We did, however, cover a lot of ground during those 7 hours. Also, you have to bring your own lunch and drink. Paul picked an incredible site on a high hilltop to have our lunch. If visiting in July, PLEASE bring repellent with deet and head netting to cover your head.

My husband and I have always wanted to see polar bears but did not want to spend the enormous sum to travel high up into the arctic to see them. Churchill Nature Tours provides a 5-day trip in October and November to see the polar bears in Churchill, Manitoba before the ice forms on the ocean and the bears travel out to hunt for seals. It is a remarkable opportunity to see polar bears up close while tracking them in tundra buggies. We saw polar bears a ways off feeding, mothers and cubs, two males sparring, and had several polar bears come close to our vehicle in which we could safely view them.

Churchill Ecotours offers small--appx. 10 people--tour groups and provides excellent, knowledgeable guides who respect nature and wildlife. You'll see the same bears and sights as the folks who pay double from other tour companies. Furthermore, Churchill is a small outpost with limited, comfortable accommodations and restaurants, so all the tour groups--even the deluxe ones--stay and eat at the same places. Why pay more?

The details of the trips were handled efficiently and in a timely manner without any hitches. We were met at the Hilton Hotel in Winnipeg by our guide, Steve. He was very friendly and introduced us to the other members of the group. It was a nice sized group of 10 people. The smaller size was perfect. We headed to Churchill early the next morning. The first day itinerary called for a visit to the Eskimo Museum and a tour of the town. In hindsight I would choose a tour that went directly out to the tundra for the bear viewing experience instead a tour of the town and museum. They were nice and all that, but my main focus was the polar bears.
We had two day trips out to the Tundra. Getting there was a long bus ride and then a transfer to the Polar Rover. That vehicle is amazing. It's a double size bus sitting on 6 huge tires 8 feet tall. It is a warm environment with plenty of room to move about. We had opportunities to take pictures inside the vehicle through windows that could go down, or else go outside onto the viewing deck.
Another time I would plan a trip a little later into the very short season of October and November. We were there the week of October 20. We saw bears and got excellent pictures but I think we would have seen a lot more a couple of weeks later into the season.
Packing: Don't over pack (like I always seem to do) Your shirts are hidden under coats 99% of the time so a wide variety of new shirts to wear every day isn't necessary. Layer with a clean shirt next to your skin every day and then just re-use the next layers. Make sure you have warm gloves. Simple little knit gloves may be good for walking on the city streets but they won't keep your hands warm in Churchill. It's a juggling match to make sure you hands are warm and your fingers are still free to push the shutter buttons. When the bears starts wrestling you will have your fingers glued to the shutter.
The tour we were on included a helicopter ride and a dogsled ride. The helicopter was awesome and we saw a lot of wildlife below us. Our pilot was really good to hover a bit so we could get pictures. The dogsled ride was also fun. The snow wasn't quite deep enough so we ran on tires instead of runners. The dogs get so excited when it's time to hook them up to the sled and are very eager to run. Dave takes excellent care of his dogs.
Steve is an excellent guide. He's funny and has a great way of getting everyone involved. He isn't afraid to give you a "hard" time and gets as good as he gives.
